I had the opportunity on my day off from work to come visit this park in all of its beauty. My first boat outing was with their seasonal ranger Jewell West, she was very knowledgeable and personable! She was definitely passionate about the eagles, the park, our beautiful state, and the preservation of our state's natural wonders. On our outing we saw nearly 16 eagles, plenty of osprey, and many other native species. It was a very enjoyable way to spend the morning, and a very beautiful and relaxing ride! That afternoon I came back for the history of the lake boat ride, it was shorter than the eagle spotting venture, but was also with seasonal ranger West. She painted a unique picture about the geological origins of the lake and its troubled past. It was very interesting, and I really enjoyed hearing about it while actively seeing it in person. The facilities at the state park are brand new and they are amazing. They have very enriching and hands on ways to experience this park's history and biological elements. Many of their facilities are brand new due to increased funding and repairs after a tornado a few years ago. The flora and fauna of the lake are immensely beautiful. This place is most definitely a hidden gem for west Tennessee! I look forward to coming back this July for the 250th anniversary of the USA celebration.

There's also an RV area with about 30 sites, and at only $20 a day, it's a fantastic deal. It wasn't full during our stay, which made it feel peaceful and uncrowded. My husband did complain about the mosquitoes, but oddly enough, they don't bother me as long as I'm sitting next to him, he's nature's bug spray, I guess. The camp host was incredibly sweet and welcoming, and we loved the little camp cats roaming around. One of them, Shadow, was especially adorable and even let us pet him. All in all, a great campsite with a relaxed vibe and some charming furry company. Would happily stay again.

Not only was the park itself beautiful--but Cinda, the campground hostess, was by far the best hostess we have ever had in our many years of camping. Cinda was present whenever we needed her. She would willingly drive her golf cart and wagon to get us firewood or ice without once complaining. She was always cheerful, smiling, and happy to talk about the Park and the historical area. We consider Columbus-Belmont State Park to be our favorite campground--well worth driving all the way from Colorado, where we live--and consider it especially so now that Cinda is the hostess. We look forward to returning there!

There are several great places to visit as a part of this area, but my favorites by far are the Current River and Big Spring on the Current River, and the campground of the same name. I have a wonderful group of friends that introduced me to floating on the Current when I was in college, and ever since this river has held a special place in my heart. We usually camp at Big Spring Campground. There are both electric, non-electric, and RV hookup's. There are real bathrooms, as well as hot showers within walking distance of camp (not porta potties, but it is a campground - so say hello to your local, resident spiders and their webs). We like this camp, because it's right on the river, family friendly, and close to town but far enough out to enjoy nature. While camping a must do experience for all is a walk to Big Spring. It's a natural cold spring, whose source pumps out enough fresh water to fill Busch Stadium in 33 hours! I like to walk there in the early morning or twilight to see the mist roll in. http://www.nps.gov/ozar/planyourvisit/big-spring.htm The nearby town of Van Buren offers: - a nice Lodge for those who want a nice dinner and/or whose idea of camping is air conditioning, nice beds, and tv - the local ice cream spot called The Jolly Cone - the local cafe, The Floatstream Restaurant, for your typical small diner food and a pretty okay breakfast - various small shops to stock up on essentials: beer, sunblock, souvenir tshirts, snacks, replaceable float shoes and swimsuits, intertubes, gas, fishing bait, etc. - and a whole lot of other small town amenities The water is spring fed. So it's super cold and clear - perfect for a hot summer's day! The Current has a pretty decent current, with nice deep water and wading shallows dotted with periodic gravel bars. It's great for intertubing and canoe trips. Various campgrounds and businesses offer rentals and trips with pick up and drop off options (2, 4, 6 hour floats, or even multiple day trips). Check out the area and find YOUR favorite spots and recommendations. It will probably become one of your favorite places on Earth too!

Check-in was efficient, and the staff was exceptionally helpful. Throughout our stay, we experienced no issues with the water supply, electrical, or sewage systems. Our pull-through site accommodated our 35-foot trailer without difficulty. While the Wi-Fi, as is common in RV parks, was not optimal for streaming, it was sufficient for basic phone and tablet use. The water had a noticeable chlorine taste, but our in-line filter and Brita pitcher resolved this. Paducah was conveniently located, offering a wider selection of stores and restaurants than anticipated. The campground offered various activities during our visit. Each morning, a vendor sold fresh baked goods, jams, and jellies, which we found to be very good. Mark Cope provided a BBQ wagon, and his BBQ and potato salad were also excellent. The park also hosted an ice cream social and a wine tasting by "Purple Toad Winery," a family-owned winery in Paducah, KY. There is a lake on-site where fishing is available, and bait is sold. We will certainly choose Fern Lake Campground for our next visit.

I'm not sure…read morehow large of a park it is, as our family had reserved one of the first pavilions in the park, but there was a store near the front of the park so I imagine it's a pretty large one. Sam. A Baker seems to be a popular place. There were quite a few people camping in tents and RVs there a couple of weekends ago. I'm not the camping type and I only stayed during the day, so I can't say anything for the camping amenities. -1 star for the facilities. They had no running water inside. There was a place outside of the restrooms for washing one's hands and feet. However, there was no soap and no hot water. I feel that was rather unsanitary. I waded out in a river for the first time in my life. That was fun! I'd like to go again sometime.

The most important thing about this place is the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The…read morepoint where the two great rivers meet and truly form the Mighty Mississippi from here on south. Historically, this was a very significant place. There has been an actual fort in place here during the Civil War. And the exploration of the Mississippi Purchase by Lewis and Clark famously stopped here for a week. Apparently, though, the confluence used to be quite a bit farther north and the rivers have just deposited so much sediment over the years that the point gradually drifts further and further south. The whole area feels a bit forgotten, much like the relics of old Route 66 in the American west. In this case, first the advent of automobiles, then air travel and interstates seem to have done it in over time. While it's a historically significant area, it's as if the constant flux of flooding and drought that wipes clean the surrounding area and perpetually re-maps the path of these rivers also keeps any more solid form of established tourism structures from sticking it out. There are no bathrooms here - just a porta-potty. The parking lot and roads are rough. The grass is overgrown and I was the only person visiting. The three-story old observation tower can be scaled, but I can't imagine it's long for this world in its current condition. The nearest permanent structure is a welcome center about a quarter mile back up the only road to the point. And that is completely shut down with a single worn-out info board in the parking lot. From the perspective of an individual seeking out even the finer points of American history, it's probably worth a stop assuming you're taking a tour of the Mississippi mounds or visiting the nearby New Madrid Fault. I wouldn't exactly suggest going out of your way to stop by here, however. It's been relegated to a blink in time.
