We were "skeedaddling" from Carey NC and in need of dinner when my wife came upon McGuires Pub in…read moreHickory NC. The pub is in the basement of a building which is not always a good thing but in this case, it worked well! The spiral staircase added character to the pub and the character kept on keepin' on as we entered the restaurant. The inside is brick and wood which gives a pleasant dive feel. The staff was friendly and we were seated promptly. It was around 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening so it was pleasantly uncrowded. We ordered Irish potato soup, fried cheese curds, the Reuben on sourdough bread and fish n' chips. They were all amazing!! I had the soup and it was delicious- it was their take on French onion soup with potatoes and carrots. They always have it so if you like soup- GET IT! The cheese curds were legit- the cheese was tasty and the breading just right. My wife ordered the Rueben on sourdough instead of the offered rye. The sandwich was a classic Reuben which my wife liked so much that I had to have a bite. It was great! Plenty of corned beef and hash with a sauce that added the right amount of tang. My son ordered the fish and chips. The fish was outstanding and my son and I both agreed that it was as good as fish that we had recently had in London- awesome! One note about the fries- the fries were scrumptious and came in a shape that seems like they shaved from a potato rather than the usual shape of a fry. The shape was neat but the taste was no joke- delicious. Oh, and if you like sweet tea, they have it.;) Overall, it was a great dinner in a great place with friendly people at a fair price. Now we know where to go the next time we are in Hickory. If you live in the area and haven't tried McGuires, do yourself a favor and go!!! Thanks, McGuire's Pub!!

I was visiting friends that moved to NC recently. While they were showing me the shops in Union…read moreSquare they mentioned that they hadn't visited this restaurant yet. So we decided that we were going to give it a try. After looking at a menu and being approached by the host who gave us a brief introduction to the menu we were in for sure. We asked to sit indoors with it being a windy and somewhat humid day. They have plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas. We were informed later by our excellent server, Ashlee that there is also seating upstairs! We forgot to take a tour! The decor is very chic, but not overly done. We were seated at a table, but booths are available as well. Even the women's restroom with chic. It needed to be picked up a bit but was nice. Our server Ashlee was excellent! Her upbeat personality and friendliness was in the 10 rating! For only being at the restaurant a couple of weeks I think her vibes will keep bringing customers back. But not only her vibes, the food is very good too! My friends were very happy with their main meal, me as well! I had the Chicken Panini and the companion (side dish) I selected was the Pan Fried Corn. Both very good! We did order shareables too! The Southwest egg rolls and the Charcuterie Board. We were very happy with both! I would definitely order them again. I ordered two alcoholic drinks. My first drink was called the Bees Knees (ginger, honey, lemon bourbon) and an Espresso Martini. Both were good. The ginger was very mild in the Bees Knees. We were quite full so we were not able to enjoy our desserts at the restaurant but did order them to go. We ordered the Crème Brûlée and Key Lime Cheesecakes to go. I enjoyed the Key Lime, a good balance of sweet and tart. A little perfumme for me but still good. The feedback on the Crème Brûlée, was ok. I didn't try it. When I visit this area again, I would surely come back here and try some other items on the menu. Parking in this area can be quite busy, especially on the weekends. We came during the weekday in July after 1pm. We had to circle a few times before we got a parking spot. Come early!

Who possibly wants to eat deep fried breaded grits? We ordered some apps and I forget what my wife and SIL order, but the overall opinion was just OK. No one wanted to return. Plus... the inside restaurant smelled like something died in there. We ate outside, as eating inside was impossible due to the smell. When I went to use the bathroom about an hour later, they had heavily perfumed the restuarant.

This bar gets a lot of talk, but I honestly don't see the appeal. The crowd is mostly younger,…read morewhich is fine, but the energy feels weird--like everyone's trying to make something happen, but nothing ever does. The music isn't too loud, so you can hold a conversation, but it still somehow feels lifeless. Not much going on inside besides people standing around looking bored. But the real problem? The police are ALWAYS there. Every night out turns into a waiting game--how long before the blue lights pull up? It kills the whole mood. You can't relax, and it honestly feels more like a sting operation than a night out. Mediocre drinks, uncomfortable atmosphere, and too much drama for a place that's supposed to be "lowkey." Hard pass.

I recommended Dive Bar to all of my friends, and always mentioned how safe, affordable, and fun their business is. Tonight, a friend from college and I were excited to go to the Dive Bar--I hyped up the experience to her astronomically and assured her that it would be the best bar she'd ever been to (bonus points for the arcade games!). Sadly, upon entering, my friend was turned away for having a "fake ID." Her ID is in no way facetious--it is up to date, came straight from the DMV, and boasts the same birth date on her birth certificate. It is also the permanent plastic copy, not the temporary paper one from last year! Instead of trying to scan it or even electing to consult a police officer on the corner right outside the door, she was turned away, leading us to find another bar to give our business to for the night. Her ID is vertical, but this is because she renewed her license prior to its expiration on her 21st birthday--since she wasn't 21 yet and didn't want to risk having an expired license to wait and get a horizontal copy, she was given a vertical (but STILL VALID) driver's license. I am incredibly disappointed with our experience tonight, and will sadly have to rescind my doting on the Dive Bar in all future conversations regarding Hickory nightlife. Ridiculous!
