    Boots Court Motel, Carthage
    Bruce K.

I don't need hotel or motel rooms much because I have most of the comforts of home in the Sprinter van, so I did not stay at Boots Court. I did stop through to check it out on a Sunday morning after reading about it on Atlas Obscura and others. The motel dates back to 1939 and is designed in the "streamline moderne" style that looks almost Art Deco. It is at the intersection of Route 66 and US 71, the "crossroads of America." Between the location and the design, it was quite sought after along the road. Allegedly, movie star Clark Gable stayed here. There is parking nearby (or a private carport for your room if you're staying here) so you can walk around and take photos of the impressive restoration of the property. Remember, it is private property so be respectful as you enjoy this 20th century design in the 21st century. [Review 19769 overall - 246 in Missouri - 741 of 2023.]

Loved our stay here. We had driven from St Louis to Tulsa for a concert and decided to follow Historic Route 66 on the way home. I was lucky to get a room here. This place has 5 stars because it IS amazing. Everything felt updated - new and clean - and yet they have successfully created a vintage vibe. Gorgeous floors. No television! (I hadn't even told my boyfriend b/c anytime we travel, the first thing he does is turn the TV on.). There was a radio on when we arrived and it was great music, with almost no commercials. The woman who checked us in? She called us about 5:40 pm b/c we hadn't arrived yet. (I didn't realize the welcome center / check in closed at 6 pm.) I told here we were just about 30 minutes away. She said she'd wait for us. (We were there right at 6 pm.) She was so helpful. We had a pleasant evening walking to the Courthouse square and then just a half block away for Baum (ice cream). Really a wonderful stay. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend. Perfect stay for anyone driving route 66.

Originally constructed in 1939, The Boots Court motel sits along historic U.S. Route 66 in Carthage, Missouri. This motel offers 13 rooms, one of which (Room 6) was once preferred by the late Clark Gable. The second part of the motel was built in 1946. The iconic and unique Streamline Moderne motel fell into despair, but was recently bought by a nonprofit, which has poured more than $1 million to restore it. Each room comes with a radio - just exactly how it was when it was built! A local radio station plays music from the 1940s that you can tune into while you stay there. There also used to be an underground garage that people, like Gable, could use to park. They could then use stairs that led guests straight to their rooms in the building - without ever once going outside and being seen. The garage has since been turned into the motel's laundry room. Rumor was that there was a tunnel that ran underneath the motel to the courthouse so that the powers that be could meet without ever being spotted. Thank you to hotel manager Kim for giving me a tour of this magnificent and beautiful place!!

We just stayed at the motel on our way west on Route 66. This motel still has rooms they are renovating but the ones that are open are wonderful. Kim greeted us with cold water and a small bag of ice! So nice because it was very hot! Rooms are very clean. Very simple and in keeping with the era. So happy they had a room available! Would highly recommend

If you are looking for charm and a slice of Route 66 history this is the place. Clark Gable was a frequent guest. Each room has a small alcove where you could pull in your car. It is believed to be the first if not one of the first "motel" concept hotels - so it was called a Court as the word Motel wasn't yet in use. The rooms have been lovingly restored to the era and they were lucky enough to find many original fixtures in storage. Bedding in style of the era, exposed hardwood floors, and the shower heads in the showers installed at about my shoulder height - the reason being so ladies would not ruin their hairdos in the days of roller sets and curls. No TVs, just AM radios #bootscourt #route66 #clarkgable #missouri #carthagemo #32DaysOnTheRoad

Loved the Boots! The lady working was very friendly and answered all our questions about the area. The room looked exactly like we expected for a 1940s style room and our kids loved it! The room was clean and comfortable; you could tell there was attention to detail. The place looks great lite up in neon at night. The key you get is an actual key which was a fun touch. I would highly recommend here and would definitely stay here again.

    Radio in every room!

Don't know how you could want anything more if you are looking for a vintage stay on Route 66. Found it by accident. Room with two double beds was just $71 with tax. No TV as not vintage, but the radio plays music from the 1930's. Coming to town from the East was my favorite stretch of 66. Touched the original concrete of 66 at Spencer's Phillips 66. Gay Parita's SINCLAR Station was fantastic.

I also appreciate how they have a large snack bar, breakfast, ice cream, and bottled water. In fact, I'm currently having an apple while writing this review. Our king suite is very clean and organized. Although we won't be needing it, I like the idea of a curtain separating the bed from the rest of the suite. And I also like the night light for the restroom. The sliding door for the restroom is slightly difficult to find at first, but that wasn't that much of an issue for us. The air conditioner is somewhat loud, but I feel like it could be used as white noise for people who enjoy ASMR, white noise, ETC. The chair that goes with the desk is somewhat bouncy, but comfortable. I enjoy spinning in it. I also like the mini kitchen. Not that we personally will be needing the dishwasher, it's still nice to have. I appreciate how all of the floors have ice machines. The one on the 4th floor is out of order at the moment, but they haven't put a sign up stating that. I quite enjoy the general layout of our suite. The restroom is very cozy. Small, modern, and minimalist, which really suits my style. The shower was very comfortable as well, the water warm. To top it all off, I enjoyed my second cup of hot chocolate from the lobby--it's been a cozy little experience. I had a good night's sleep overall. However, the neighboring room had their TV on quite loudly, and I could faintly hear it through the wall while lying in bed. The air conditioner also woke me up a few times during the night. The selection of breakfast food was decent. It took a little while for my mom to figure out how to use the waffle machine, though. A sign with instructions would be nice. There were plenty of places to sit. It's slightly difficult to find where you put the dirty trays. I also think there should be a sign with instructions for that. It's very quiet down there, which I apperciate. The check out process is very simple and fast. We will be back in the near future.

I gave them a great review then. But now? Eww. Basically $200 a night for a one king bed room held not any kind of expected value. 1. The mattress was as old as the hotel, smelled musty and was hard as a rock (with a random 3 pillows). 2. The pool has slippery porcelain tile around it. I've not used a pool at their Hilton brand before and maybe this is typical for them. With that said, if you or your family are going to use the pool, TAKE WATER SHOES! 3. The pool area was 1 million degrees. Actually, it was 138 degrees. Outside was nearly 100 but we opened both outside doors for cross ventilation and that helped, considerably. 4. The breakfast was hideous. I had to check my watch to see if it was closing bc so many things were completely empty. 8:10 am on a Sunday. Still a long time remaining on their (un)complimentary breakfast. And the coffee? Don't get me started. 5. I requested extra pillows about 8:00 pm. They finally brought 2, hours later... without pillowcases. Was that a joke?!?! 6. The outdoor furniture that was cozy and fun to sit outside and chat with 3 years ago has literally SHREDDED cushions. (Is the goal to NOT have people outside?) This hotel has to be a franchise, with a completely careless owner. I'll never go back. 2 stars earned for location alone.
