There are exposed brinks all over Civic Theater and a cash bar. Holla! The Blackbox has been remodeled to look like a salon setting in the 1900s with table seating up front and movie theater style seating in the rear. They are showing two shows a night here. The first is called Leadville or Bust and features Reyna von Vett and her three "Hell's Belles" performing burlesque from the turn of the century. This isn't burlesque like you'll find down at Lannie's though - there's a lot less nudity. As they explain burlesque at that time was a lot more like a vaudeville show. There is tons of singing and dancing and double entendres in the songs and jokes. It's definitely a lot of fun. This show starts at 7 and lasts about 2 hours with a 15-minute intermission. They play Thursday through Saturday and tickets are $25. The next show starts at 10 and this is the infamous Burlesque As It Was show that many of us have seen around town. Vivienne Va Voom and her fellow entertainers have found a new home to shimmy and sashay around the stage. And it is definitely entertainment at its finest. These shows play Friday and Saturday nights and are $15. So, go on a Friday and see a double header. How's that for a double entendre?

There's a beautiful garden space in the back as well where you can sit surrounded by plants. The show itself was very engaging for our kids (age 4, 6) as there is audience participation and jokes during the performance. They even incorporated all of the kids name at the beginning and a very positive introduction about when to listen vs when to engage. Very impressive that the owner does all of this herself. Our only minor complaint is that there were one or two pieces of dialogue not well suited for kids (e.g. stealing away someone's girlfriend) and some verbal fillers. However, overall we had a great time and will definitely be back for the next show!

We enjoyed the pre-show decorating of our "ticket puppet" with construction paper and markers and looking around at all the wonderful puppets and marionettes hanging throughout the building. The main theater area is very roomy, clean and quiet. It has little "mini theaters" set up inside where the kids could put on their own puppet shows before and after the big performance. The show was very good! Our two-year old was captivated for most of the time, smiling and waving her little "ticket puppet" in the air. My only minor disappointment in the performance itself was that it had a fair amount of "filler" in it, which can be understandable considering the story in question, but the extra banter of the "father not being able to find any food while hunting" or the kids "finding and eating the mouse's berries in the forest" caused a few of the kids to lose interest. It almost seemed like it would make more sense to put on two shorter performances than trying to extend one story to fill the time allotment. It may also have to do with this particular story. Perhaps other stories don't have such a dramatic problem? Anyway, please don't let this dissuade you from visiting the theater! We had a great time and your kids will love it too!

Most of the booths were empty which was weird. 7pm on Saturday and the place was packed and nothing much was going on. The music ended when we arrived and nothing started while we were there. The entrance was poorly position on a side street with very little signage. The whole affair seems poorly organized compared to events that happen at civic center for example. I appreciate that it's held in five points but it needs better planning.

What started in downtown at Larimer Square with dozens of artists has now become over two hundred talents chalking it up over several blocks around the Denver Art Museum. The way this festival works is sponsor-driven. Local businesses and organizations buy "squares" to which carefully curated artists are assigned with full autonomy in theme and execution to create, as long as the sponsors' names are chalked first. The artists are then given two days to create their design in real time, rain or shine. It's an opportunity to witness visual art in all shapes and colors. With the youth group and school opportunities as well, you've got kids of all ages being represented on the pavement. In addition to the visual arts, the festival includes live music and vendors. I strongly recommend planning your weekend around it. This is an event to build a tradition around, for sure!

I had never been to the Denver Chalk Art Festival and was really glad my friends convinced me to…read moreattend. We went early on day one to try to avoid crowds and the 90+ degree heat. Armed with a charged phone, a hat, water, and plenty of sunscreen, we were ready. Crowds weren't too bad at 10am, and several artists were lucky to be either shaded by the tall buildings or by the tents they brought. Being this early, we got to see works in progress, and I appreciated seeing all the detailed labor that goes into these beautiful, colorful, sadly temporary pieces. A free event, it is worth making the trip downtown. There are food and drink vendors throughout, as well as popular restaurants and bars nearby to pop into if you need a break. (The 2026 Event was near the Denver Art Museum.)

Seating began 30 minutes before the show. There were accessible bathrooms available. The staff was welcoming and pleasant. My husband and I came to see Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors. We had the bar-like seating which provides space for a beverage. We both got a glass of cabernet to enjoy during the performance. I did notice they have a small menu as well, but we had just come from dinner. The stage comes right up to the first row of tables which makes it a more intimate theater experience. The show itself was great! We thoroughly enjoyed it, laughing throughout. I would come see a production at this theater again.

The theater itself is very intimate. My friend and I were seated next to the A/V booth, which is always fun. Someone behind me was making obnoxious commentary, and I wish they would have been a little more respectful of their neighbors, but overall it was a decent experience. I didn't check out the bar, but the restrooms were fine. I would come back again to watch another show!
