I was impressed that he was clean-cut and professional in appearance, well spoken, friendly and helpful. After turning our system on and giving me helpful watering tips, he departed. We were his last appointment of the day. 45 minutes later as I was playing with Remington (my dog) in the back yard, I heard a water-squirting sound. I investigated and discovered that water was gushing from an underground box outside. I text-messaged Steve with a picture, and he responded with an apology and said he would be back. He showed back up 30 minutes later in his personal car dressed to the 9's with his wife in the passenger seat. They were headed out on a date. Steve quickly found the problem with our leak, borrowed a pair of pliers and fixed the issue in less than 3 minutes. Steve COULD have easily pretended not to see my text. He COULD have made an excuse that something must have broken after he left. He COULD have told us that he would be back Monday. He COULD have put a guilt trip on me. This town is famous for "oh, we'll put you on our waiting list, but it might be three or four weeks before we can get to you." So, service within about five hours is unheard of. He charged me for all large trees. When I returned in the spring I was shocked to discover they were not all large. And 11 of the 16 were dead. Two trees were finally replaced. They also died. He also forgot to turn on the sprinklers for the lawn. So the lawn was dead. After the trees died, he put in a drip system without asking and no bid. In the process, he cut the existing irrigation line and my Internet. The drip system doesn't work because the tubing isn't big enough for my water pressure. In addition, I've been informed by the new landscaper that the trees he planted had been trimmed and topped to make them look healthier than they were. I've spent thousands and have nothing to show for it. The guy's a disaster.

I asked around, and found that Jim at Evergreen Treecare is the "tree doctor" and is the best in Jackson. He gives free advice, told one neighbor: "Hey, just water the trees 2 hours a day with a full hose. You don't need me to come do anything, just water, water, water". That is priceless in a town where folks want to grab every dollar. We have a problem in Rafter J with spider mites and Evergreen is doing a lot to help care for the trees before they die next year.
