You can tell within moments of entering and reading their menu. This isn't a coffee shop it's a dessert beverage place who dabbles in coffee. Don't believe me? I ordered a latte and asked the gentleman if the small has a double shot or a single shot of espresso, a very basic and simple question. He responded "i don't know." I inquired about the various sizes and amount of shots and he again replied "i don't know" then he said "if the latte doesn't have espresso i can make sure they add it." I said "your lattes don't already come with espresso?" He once again said "i don't know." (Obviously all lattes come with espresso) . He never bothered to check either. My niece proceeded to ask what flavors their macarons were, it took them asking 4 employees to give her an answer while the line piled up behind us Again this isn't a serious coffee shop, just one masquerading as one. I don't live in Altoona but when I visit i go across town to the clay cup. I've been in coffee shops all across this country, this one is just not it unless you want a bucket of sugar.

The place seemed to have a bit of an identity crisis with a separate pottery painting area in the back, but I suppose that's only practical to make multiple uses of the space given this historic core of Altoona seems to have fallen on hard times and doesn't have much going for it. The iced mocha (3.5/5) I got was decent with only minor hints of bitterness, but was otherwise quite average. I'm happy to round up as the service was pleasant and I'm happy to support a small local business. I'd recommend The Clay Cup to those looking for a decent coffee shop in downtown Altoona.

I have so much in my collection that came from there. And the real treasures are Mayor Fox and Bonnie. They are the nicest people and their homemade brownies are amazing. There's just something about the chocolate and orange combination that seems odd but really works. My nephew got the chai latte and really enjoyed it. Ample seating. Some really cute, cozy spots. I tried hubs too and I didn't taste much chai. Both tasted like luke warm water. I also questioned the food selection to see what, if anything was gluten free. And the workers couldn't really tell me much (I was told to look at the label for the ingredients) - so we decided to pass. I'm sure maybe the drip coffee could be good - but latte's might not be their thing..... Cute decor though - I loved the ceiling lighting fixture.
