In general, I oppose the yuppification of one of America's greatest culinary comfort-food achievements -- the hamburger. One may argue that the hamburger has historical roots in Europe, which I will not refute. However, it was here in the US that the hamburger was lifted from its original incarnation as a humble mass of chopped meat, into its current form as a succulent, savory sandwich, which so many of us adore. But I digress... My requirements for a good burger are simple. For starters, and without exception, I'm looking for quality ground beef, a roll that can stand up to drippings and grease, and fresh vegetables. I often find that when a burger has too much going on (i.e. too many toppings, ridiculous proportions, odd toppings, silly names, etc.), it's because the burger joint can't make a simple and decent burger. This is what I feared when I first saw the enormous variety of burgers at Boston Burger Company. However, when I sunk my teeth into the Alpine, I immediately knew that I could not simply dismiss this as another gimmicky burger establishment. So what is the Boston Burger Company? To begin with, it's cute, clean, casual, and unpretentious. The staff are friendly and quick to offer suggestions and assist you in navigating the rather large menu. You want a vegetarian burger? They've got it! Turkey burger? They've got that too! I opted for the Alpine, which is basically a mushroom and Swiss burger. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium temperature, as requested. While the burger was clearly the star of the show, the deliciously crispy fries and the reasonably priced bottled beer helped to cement my positive review of the BBC. I'll keep this brief since we're 40+ reviews deep by now. The burgers are good -- nothing to write home about. For standard burgers (swiss mushroom, bacon, etc.) you'll find it on par with Ruby Tuesdays, etc.. I think it's the fries that set BBC apart. I wasn't sure what I was going to get for almost 7 dollars for the garlic parm fries -- I was concerned it wouldn't feed 2, but it did and we didn't get to the bottom of the bowl, even. These fries are not your run of the mill shoe string fries, or even steak fries. These monster fries are hand cut, and some of the pieces are a quarter of the damn potato, I kid you not! They were really yummy and filling with a lot of hot potato flesh in the middle. BBC's sides are also unique. I liked dipping the homemade chips into my side of baked beans. Real good. read more

Came here after a long night out the day before. We were in the mood for some burgers and my husband recommended this place as he works in Davis and has been before. I ordered a burger with avocado, lettuce, tomato, onions, and cheddar cheese. I thought the burger was OK. Not that flavorful or tender. My husband enjoyed his burger and probably would think my 3 star review is harsh. I expected more out of the actual meat though at this place. My husband, son, and I eat here every 1-2 weeks. I have yet to have a burger that I haven't liked (though, admittedly, I often stick to my favorite, the Hot Mess). My husband has had a larger variety of the burgers and is always pleased with his choice. He's tried everything from the Kitchen Sink to the State Fair to the BLT burger. The only "mishap" we've had is one time when one of my son's chicken fingers came out undercooked and were still pink when we were cutting them up for him. Only one piece out of the whole meal was like this, and was the result of the chicken finger's shape curling up on itself. However, the staff was really great, cooked him a full new plate and wrote his meal off the bill. Service there has never been anything less than stellar. The only downside to this place is that the burgers are so great that the few times that I've tried to have a hamburger at most other restaurants, I find myself horribly disappointed in the quality of burgers I have elsewhere. read more

HOT, FRESH, JUICY BURGERS HERE!! My cheeseburger cooked medium rare...was PERFECT. Also, I'm a girl who likes fries with her burger...but BBC has me corrected. Their homemade chips are fantastic. My only mistake was ordering appetizers. We ordered fried pickles and garlic parm fries (more like potato wedges). I wouldn't waste my time or calories on the fried pickles (and fried pickles are one of the loves of my life). The wedges were good, but DRIPPING in butter. In other words, mo butter mo problems. You don't go to BBC looking for a fancy meal. You don't go to BBC because of it's technical greatness (though it's food is all really well made). To truly appreciate Boston Burger Company, you go to enjoy the absolutely astonishing things they can do with a burger and with french fries, and you let yourself be fat, and you have a delicious night. First, a warning: BBC is a fairly small restaurant that is very popular. You are probably going to have to wait. However, almost every time I've gone, it's been with groups upwards of 10 people, and they have always been extremely accommodating to our party. BBC is small, but it's location is great, like 50 feet outside the T stop. The decor is limited because of the size and because the wall space is mostly taken up by TV's, but they've successfully captured the image and feel of a modern, unique, sorta pricey burger place. I've never had bad service here, which is perhaps surprising given I've always gone in large groups of college students. Even so, they always treated us well, we always got everything we ordered, and we were always very well attended to. But really, when your restaurant is called Boston Burger Company, pretty much all of that falls by the wayside. It all depends on your burgers. And BBC delivers. I honestly can't remember exactly how many burgers they offer, but if you can't find something on their list of specialties that you're interested in, you're either very picky or very boring. And every burger that I've tried here has been delicious. Every burger my friends have tried here have been delicious. If you're feeling up to it, I definitely suggest the 420 burger, but really, whatever you choose, you will feel happy, full, and likely have enough food for a second meal if you want it. As for their fries, they're also delicious but you order them separately, which is sort of unfortunate. Their chips and beans that come with the burger are good, but nothing special. The fries are separate because they come in large orders which have interesting flavors just like the burgers. And really, they're more potato wedges than fries, but that's okay because that's how I like them. The only thing I don't love about this restaurant is how expensive it is. It's not that it's not worth it. And the burgers are actually fairly reasonably priced compared to other places you can get specialty burgers. But everything else on the menu seems a bit inflated, which is why I haven't ordered many things other than a burger and sometimes some fries (if the party is big enough). Regardless, you definitely need to give this place a try. I promise you won't regret it, although your arteries just might. read more

So, I've only been in the Davis Square area a few months, but have managed to eat here already about a half dozen times. It's become our stand-out favorite in the area, and the go-to place for taking out-of-town visitors. A few notes: 1. Expect a wait, particularly for dinner (especially if it's a weekend). The whole of the restaurant is about the size of a large living room, without much space to wait. However, the staff offers to call you if the wait is especially long, which at least allows you to walk around Davis Square until your table opens up. 2. The staff is awesome - you start to see familiar faces, and it really feels like a small, homey place. 3. One of the perks of the place being small is that everything is SO fresh - you literally can see right into the kitchen. Every single food item I've ordered here is piping hot. In terms of the food, I've tried the following: -The Rundown Burger: This is a special, so may not be around forever, but it's my new favorite. Lettuce, tomato, deep fried pickles, and potato sticks (I got it without sauce, though I think it comes with it). Clearly unhealthy, but oh so good. -The Wakiki Burger: Ham, bacon, pineapple, teriyaki sauce - very messy (like many of their burgers), but so worth it. -Garlic Parmesan chicken tenders: Soooo rich. Amazing, but could only have like 4-5 (portions of all their chicken tender dishes are HUGE by the way..). Would be delicious on a salad or something to counteract the richness. -Honey Barbeque chicken tenders: The sauce was to-die-for - would definitely get these again. Enough for at least two meals. -Mac n Cheese Bites: Looove these - I'm usually not quite hungry enough to get an app and a burger, but these are one of my favorite items on their menu. Like perfectly fried easy-mac... yummm. Ohh, and the french fries are amazing too - potato wedges, sweet potato fries, etc. All come out piping hot, and have huge portions. I think all restaurant menus should be full disclosure. Tell me the honest to goodness truth as to what makes up each menu item. The burgers here follow this ever important rule, but the fries...notsomuch. When I order something called "Classic Fries", I expect long, medium width fries made from regular old potatoes, fried up and salted. These fries are by no means classic, but they are gigantic, battered wedges. Not that they aren't delicious. But they sure aren't as advertised, and that was a little annoying when I arrived home with my takeout order. Especially because they cost me $3.99. Do I like their burgers? You betcha! BBC is OK. Nothing great. I got the Porkasaurus Burger. Sounds like a huge burger? -NOT! It was kinda skimpy -like wicked skimpy. It has pulled pork, bacon, cheese and BBQ sauce. I wanna big burger for 14 bucks. I ate this entire plate in less than 5 minutes. Two strips of bacon and a puny patty and a dollop of pork and some cheese. Gimmie a big patty. Gimmie lots of bacon. Gimmie lots of pork. Pile this thing high -come on, BBC. You get a WAY bigger burger at Wendy's for half the price. Come on, BBC. Come ON, BBC... GIMMIE SOME FOOD! Also, the baked beans were funky and teenie too -a heaping tablespoon of beans, at best, and spiced with cloves -I sense that a tree-hugger works in the kitchen. Service kills this place. I have eaten here a million times. GREAT burger!!! I would highly suggest getting sauces on the side, because I have had issues with overwhelming sauces.....but today I had the American Burger with BBQ sauce on the side. As a preface...blue cheese crumbles means blue cheese dressing, and there was actually a non totally overwhelming amount today, but I know I don't love BBQ, so I got it on the side and put it on myself. IT WAS SO GOOD. I usually get fries. If you want a starter....go with the fries. I had a loaded chip starter one time, it was not great. The fries are totally great though. Service: for a small place, service is surprisingly neglectful. I always have some issue with it. My last visit, I had this blonde waitress who cared more about socializing with her coworkers than she did about making sure our beers were refilled, and our orders taken, etc. It was really just irritating. Today....was kind of my fault. I went in to grab a burger and make what I knew would be a lengthy phone call (talking to my friends sister about her wedding festivities which I'm trying to help plan long distance)...so I sat outside. I think there was only one waitress on, and I was left outside for a lengthy amount of time before getting a menu, then when I was trying to pay. I'm a little biased because it got really cold and I got grumpy waiting so I went inside to pay. So today, I think was more of a staffing problem than a real issue with service. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and there wasn't much of a wait so we snagged a table as soon as it became available. I'm pretty plane jane so I got the burger with bacon and avocado and what can I say, it was the juiciest burger I've had in a while. This is the real deal. It doesn't come with fries but rather cole slaw which is good but we ordered sweet potato fries on the side and they were a good enough size to share. Everything was great here. With that being said I was interested in trying out the Boston Burger Company hoping it would be a staple for my last summer in Davis. Eeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It is definitely not a date place or even a nice dinner place anymore. BUT they do make some great burgers! They menu is very simple Burgers, Fries, Sodas. WARNING the burger comes with chips and you have to order fries separately. I got the Buffalo Burger which was great and I truly enjoyed the meal. They do not serve alcoholic drinks either, so that is another tid-bit to look out for. But if you are just looking for a GOOD quick burger in Davis with no special bells whistles or drinks. Visited on a Friday night, and was immediately a little turned off by the service. We walked in and stood behind a few people who were also waiting--only to have a woman come in behind us, walk past everyone, and talk to the hostess to be seated. Fortunately, everyone was seated relatively soon after, though I was dismayed to be seated at what could easily be considered the worst table in the house. That aside, our server was incredibly friendly--she apologized for the wait, of which there really wasn't one. In fact, she was overly apologetic throughout the meal. All the food was brought incredibly quickly. The portions at this place are huge, which is partially to blame on the lack of fries that come with the burgers, forcing you to order them separately. (A burger comes with homemade chips and your choice of coleslaw or baked beans...or a few other options which I can't currently remember.) I ordered the Boston Burger (a basic burger) with a veggie patty. I was pleased that the server asked me if I was a vegetarian, to ensure proper cooking and steer me away from their baked beans. The bun was white and doughy and the lettuce was iceberg, but the patty was pretty great--it didn't seem prefab. I was disappointed at the lack of traditional fixings on the basic burger (no pickles), but probably could have requested them. Also, a person has to ask for mustard at this place. I've saved the best for last--the lemon pepper fries. One whiff of these as you're biting down will clear your sinuses. They're not too peppery, but they're DOUSED in lemon juice. Which made me love them an inordinate amount. We couldn't finish all the food between the two of us, so the fries came home with us and were reheated (remarkably well) the next day. Saw this on "The Phantom Gourmet" and knew I had to try it. It's a little out of my way, but I was on the Red Line one day and thought, what the heck, I'll make the trip. It was only about 4pm on a Saturday, but the place was packed and busy. The place is TINY. There is the Square right outside, but that's not a great option in the winter. So I ordered out, which took a decent amount of time. Meanwhile, there not being any place to sit, I have move constantly to stay out of everyone's way. Before heading to a movie across the street, we popped into this little place for dinner. YUM! Portions are very generous. My terodactyl chicken sandwich was as huge as it was tasty. We didn't order fries, but I saw some at the next table and they're definitely made for sharing. My friend's Waikiki burger was also huge and delicious. I was worried the horseradish would overpower the burger, but all the ingredients were just right. Very good meat, cooked as requested. We had Greek fries as an appetizer - they were great! I had all the olives to myself because my companions don't eat olives (so why did they want the Greek fries?). That made for a little too much food. Went to the Boston Burger Company with a lady friend of mine recently and was delighted by the experience. Our waitress was Ashlie and she was lovely as could be! She was very prompt with such an inviting attitude, despite the obvious crowd in the restaurant. Great service and the food was even better. My companion ordered the burger with onion rings neatly stacked like a cairn - how darling! And I ordered The King - an Elvis-inspired sandwich that would've left Mr. Presley himself "all shook up". YUM! We topped off our meals with a flavorful pumpkin beer, which added the perfect hint of autumn to our lunch. I love this place! They have over 20 types of burgers and then a whole bunch of delicious other stuff on the menu as well. Their salads are awesome too. It has never cost more than $30 for 2 of us to eat lunch here including apps. There are not a lot of tables but even when there is a line it never takes more than 10-15 min for one to free up because the food always comes out fast. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick, tasty, lunch or dinner! read more

**Update:I have finally found the answer to surviving Boston Burger and not feeling like a glutinous slob. For once, we weren't starving and didn't order an appetizer. Even though the fries are thick, hot and a little crunchy, we didn't get any tonight and instead went right in for the burger. Tonight's adventure brought me to a new creation they just put on the menu. The Vermonster is so unique and so good with all that sweet sweet maple syrup and sauteed apple. It's like putting an apple desert on top of a cheeseburger. I'd complain, but nobody would listen. It's that good. By the way, they also started selling the Shipyard Applehead. Would have been a perfect companion to my burger but the red, white and blue PBR was calling my name again. Comparatively to other burger joints around Boston, their burgers are well worth the price being both cheap and filling. Their fries are alright but their onion rings out do any other onion rings I've had around showing me for the first time why people enjoy onion rings. I ordered the 420 burger, and needless to say it was STACKED deep. Any person, even one with severe munchies would be content with the serving size by this joint. The burger was great and when you ask for ketchup or BBQ sauce they bring out mini-tubs. Boston Burger Company is a small place, open since May 2009, serving burgers with every topping imaginable, including peanut butter, bacon & fried bananas (Um, no thanks... although if they added Somerville's famous marshmallow Fluff maybe I'd reconsider). I went with the more conventional Alpine Burger -- swiss cheese and mushrooms -- and was satisfied. The selection of french fries is FANTASTIC!! We got half chili-cheese and half classic, but they also have sweet potato, lemon/garlic, and other options as well... Their homemade chips were hard... kind of worried I might break my teeth ... but since I had french fries I just left the chips on the plate :) This seems like a place that has potential to be a chain in Boston... reasonably priced with many food options, I think they'll do well! read more

Delicious, absolutely delicious. I got a delicious vegan veggie burger, and delicious fries. This place was amazing, the burger was absolutely delicious. My non-vegan friend even got the veggie burger and absolutely loved it. The fries are ridiculous, they are so big and so delicious. You can just tell that everything here is fresh, and high quality ingredients. You can taste the difference from here and other burger joints. This place hands down is amazing. The service was also incredible, we got steated quickly which was amazing cause there isn't a whole lotta room in this place. The boy talked me into going here for lunch today, even though I wanted to go to Mr. Crepe. I can't help it; I can't resist the tempting avocado crepe and iced tea. I would have that for lunch every day if I could. But no. He wanted to try this place. They have a nice selection of burgers, all of which can be made 'veggie' so I liked that. He went for the special veggie burger, and I got the Buffalo Burger (veggie patty instead of beef). The buffalo burger had spicy buffalo sauce, blue cheese crumbles, and diced celery. It was good. His burger had avocado, roasted red peppers, and spicy mayo, and he liked that too. The burgers were served with homemade chips and a side of either cole slaw or baked beans (vegetarian). The baked beans were tasty, and the chips were pretty lacking in flavor, but crispy. The prices are high, especially if you want to swap a veggie patty in place of a beef one. That adds another buck onto an already-pricey burger. The fries are only available in a giant portion, which is annoying. They're expensive too, at $4 for an order of plain fries or up to $7 for flavored. I wanted a few fries, but not a whole ton. Why can't they make different portion sizes? They also don't serve fresh iced tea, which is a major bust in my book. For two burgers and one side of fries (we both drank waters), our bill came to $26 after tip. A little too expensive for a weekday lunch. The food is decent, but nothing to write home about. I'll stick with my standby crepe next time. read more

These folks serve a wide range of hearty, satisfying burgers. I've found the Ranch burger exceptional - ranch dressing, plenty of bacon and melting American cheese. Service has its ups and downs. The counter staff have been friendly each time I came in, but they've got my name wrong both times. Do I look like a "Job"? Or a "Jom"? C'mon now. Pro tip: order takeout. It's never been busy when I've come on, but I've never tried sitting down. The consensus seems to be that the table service takes too long. So put in your burger orders. DE-LICIOUS ...but how could Mac and cheese on a burger NOT be? I find BBC to be refreshing. They offer a different take on the casual cheeseburger and offer a variety of toppings and styles. Plus, Fried Mac and Cheese balls - are you sensing a theme here? Any burger I have ordered there has been cooked exactly the way I requested. In addition to soda they offer some hard to find and seasonal (read: delicious) beer options The wait staff is great and friendly. And despite the small size of the establishment, they turn over tables fairly quickly - which I can appreciate it. When given unlimited options, I frequently opt for nothing. Add some incredible sounding burger specials and I start to seize and foam at the mouth. When the sassy waitress ponders my ordering-paralysis, it gets worse. The burger options at Boston Burger Company are phenomenal. From the deep-fried wonder of the Artery Clogger to the glorious bacon, peanut butter and banana The King, I was suffering from a serious case of Burger Confliction™. After consulting with the sassy waitress Danielle, I opted for her favorite... The King. She did not steer me wrong. The meat was tasty and well seasoned, cooked exactly how I wanted it. The bun was toasted, soft on the inside and nicely crisp on the outside. The chips were fine, but after a plate of fried pickles (I didn't like the odd spicy dipping sauce) and jalapeño poppers, I was getting full and most of my chips went to waste. I heartily recommend... partially for the names of the burgers (The Hot Mess? Was this named after me?) and partially for the sass of Danielle. Get there soon... she's off to study abroad soon. Burgers, burgers and more burgers. This place has it all, plus a little bit more. Right next to JP licks in Davis Square (which is by accounts, pure evil and awesomness rolled into one) Boston Burger Company fares as a solid burger place in the Boston area. The menu seems like a mile long with all sorts of great burgers, from your traditional cheese and bacon to heavy messes like the 420, drenched with bbq and topped with mozz sticks, fries, an onion ring and mac and cheese bites. Less is more for some, while more is more is for others. Be warned: It might take you some time to decide on a burger as again, there are plenty to choose from. Many of their burgers are steeped in traditional types, but as mentioned before, there are some strange ones, whether topped with mac and cheese, peanut butter or anything you feel like. The burgers themselves are cooked very well, but their flavor remains fairly neutral. The crazy and fun toppings they provide are the main attraction and its recommended that you exit your safe and simple burger arena and try one of these. They will not disspoint. They are served with kettle chips, so you might have to pay extra for fries or onion rings. If you aren't feeling the burger, there are plenty of chicken sandwich options, different types of fries, cheesey or regular, wings and other yummy appetizers. Again, Boston Burger Company has lots of options and unusual types, but it gives the place a lot of character and is not afraid of challenging a staple of American Cuisine.
