Black Ruby completely exceeded my expectations. The idea of Thai-American fusion with craft burgers and pasta sounded intriguing, but the food was genuinely impressive. Our favorites were the Mussels in Red Curry Rice Wine, Red Curry Bolognese, Massaman Beef Burger, and Mango Sticky Rice. Each packed with flavor and executed beautifully. The Thai Iced Tea was also excellent, while the Thai Ice Espresso Martini just wasn't for me. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant itself was clean, cozy, and inviting. The only downsides were that they had run out of their sourdough brioche buns, which I was excited to try, and reservations were tough to get as we had to book about a month in advance. Even so, it's easy to see why this place is so popular. I'll definitely be back and hopefully try some of the burgers with those sourdough buns next time. read more

I have to admit, given all the hype, I was expecting a bit more from Black Ruby. My friends and I came on a Thursday night with a reservation, and the restaurant was packed. Now, I suspect this might due in part because of the hype + location + thai/american fusion flavor, but even with a reservation we still ended up waiting about 30 minutes to be seated. Unfortunately, the service throughout dinner wasn't much better. Between the three of us, we ordered the scallion fries (which, for anyone wondering, aren't actually fries tossed in scallion oil or dressing), the fried calamari, the red curry Bolognese, the green curry pasta with steak, and, of course, the much-hyped Massaman burger. The fried calamari was probably the weakest dish. It had a fishier taste than I expected, and the breading was fairly greasy and tended to fall off. The scallion fries were good, though not especially memorable. Of the entrées, we preferred the green curry pasta over the red curry Bolognese, though both became a little heavy after a while. The Massaman burger was solid, but not quite the standout I was hoping for. Across the dishes, our biggest takeaway was that the curry sauces all leaned fairly rich and salty without much contrast. A little acidity or citrus would have gone a long way in brightening the flavors. Overall, Black Ruby was good, just not quite as memorable as I expected. Nothing we ordered really wowed us, but it's still a perfectly solid spot if you're in the area. Came here on a Sunday for a later lunch and the place was pretty empty. Interior was sleek and modern with wooden finishes with plenty of lighting from the big windows by the front. Menu had a good selection of entrees which I shared everything with a friend rather than order separately. Service was solid and relatively quick. Food came out in a reasonable manner and everything tasted great - Thai tea was yummy, burger was delicious, fries were so well seasoned, and the pasta was great along with the dessert. Only complaint is portions - definitely small for what you paid for. Overall, we had a solid meal and left feeling very full. The restaurant was on the smaller side and has been a hot commodity so I really wasn't expecting to land a seat on a Sunday night. The Massaman Beef Burger (winter special) is out of this world. Easily one of the most unique and flavorful burgers I've ever had--juicy, packed with flavor, and the Massaman elements work perfectly. I'm not kidding when I say I've had dreams about this burger. The Thai PB+J burger is also excellent. The peanut butter and jelly somehow work perfectly with the beef and bacon without overpowering anything. The Thai scallion fries are delicious and the creamy Tom Yum with shrimp is really unique and flavorful. The Pad Thai spring rolls are good, but two spring rolls cut in half for $10 feels a little steep. Overall, Black Ruby is fantastic. I'm not sure if they were having an off night or just need to adjust their front of house staffing but it seemed like there was way too much going on for the FOH staff. It took about 20 minutes to get a glass of wine after we ordered it while sitting at the bar because it looked like the bartender was having to make desserts for a while. We also had the appetizer delivered but got no napkins or utensils until after we ate the app with our hands and we still had to ask for them since we knew we couldn't eat the pasta with our hands. Once I tried Black Ruby, it immediately became one of my favorite restaurants in Cambridge. The cocktails are creative and delicious--I love the Thai Tea Martini--and the food is fantastic as well. The Khao Soi burger is my go-to. It has all of the flavors and textures of Khao Soi, with pickled mustard greens for acid, crispy noodles for a crunchy flair, and just the right amount of spice. I find myself craving it often! The one and only bone I have to pick with Black Ruby is that the service, while very attentive, is almost TOO fast. I get that they want to turn tables over efficiently, but the last couple of times I've come, I kind of felt like they were rushing me out. I came here to catch up with a couple friends and our food came almost instantly, before our drinks, and the waitress seemed eager to keep us moving. I think our entire meal was less than 50 minutes. Burgers are very popular choices but if you're not feeling a burger, they have salads + pasta options too! We took our server's suggestion & ordered one burger and one pasta to share. Here's specifically what we ordered: -Thai Iced Tea (x2) -Spicy Calamari -Massaman Burger -Red Curry Bolognese There were sooo many drinks to choose from & we were very tempted to try but nothing can beat a classic Thai Iced Tea! We both got one & it was good! Not the best either of us has ever had but we also didn't expect it to be either since it's a Thai fusion spot. Not bad though... creamy! My husband enjoyed the Khao Soi burger and I loved the tom yum pasta! The pasta was so flavorful and had a hint of tom yum that was very creatively done within a non traditional route. Street Parking Came to see what all the hype was about, was a little hesitant but I wasn't disappointed. This place has dim lighting and a bar right when you walk. We came 6 had no reservation and were seating pretty quickly but it did start getting busier after. The service was pretty quick and the dishes were presented nicely. I would come just for this one dish, it's the Mussels in Red Curry. I could drink this up, it is so good. This red curry had tomato in it so there was a little more of the sour taste. The Mushroom Coconut Chowder was a good palette cleanser, can never go wrong with a soup on the side. The one dish everyone comes for is the Massaman Beef Burger and unfortunately this wasn't a favorite. It was far too sweet for a burger making it tiring to eat all of it alone. We ended up dipping it in the curry to balance out the flavor a little, if they added more pickles I think it would've been better. The Green Curry Cream sauce was much creamier than expected and had an unexpected spice. I'm pretty good with spice so if you aren't be warned you actually can taste the spice. First off, the ambiance is great. The interior is nicely decorated with a lot of natural light, and I noticed a few people working on their laptops which gave it a relaxed feel. It's also not too loud, so it's a good spot to actually sit and enjoy your meal. As for the food, everything was solid overall, though not necessarily standout. Black Ruby is touted as a burger place, but to pigeon-hole it in any one kind of restaurant (other than fusion) is doing it a disservice. There is a melting pot of Thai and many other cuisines that come together to make the menu what it is, which is a place that anyone should be able to find a great eating experience. Noodle dishes touted as pasta, burgers that are riffs on Thai and Asian cuisine, and the more "traditional" appetizers make up a menu that feels like a globe-trot more than a lunch or dinner. We tried a number of different dishes and were pleasantly surprised and had expectation exceeded by each of them. Executed with a deftness or slight of hand that seemed almost unexpected and left me longing for more as we paid our bill and said goodbye. If you are experiencing a sort of hesitation to trying Black Ruby, you honestly should just take the plunge and try it yourself because I don't know if there is a single review that can put the overall experience into words. The value, service, decor, and everything else other than the food all falls into place once you have your first bite of your meal. Pretty tasty Thai fusion spot in Porter. The spicy lemongrass shrimp salad was not spicy, but had nice sweet citrus flavors from the tangerines. The shrimp was cooked well, but it was served warm which sort of threw me off a bit, as I expected it to be cold in a salad. The green curry fried chicken sandwich was decent - the chicken was crispy, the curry sauce was good and the fresh brioche bun was solid. I also had a spicy pineapple margarita, which I'd skip, as it didn't really taste like pineapple. Overall the food was good but I found it to be pricey given the casual food fare and portion sizes. Service was a bit aloof and not very engaging, but fine generally. The space has a slightly elevated modern feel and definitely has been transformed since its Chalawan days. Green Curry Sandwich (9/10): This was our favorite dish of the night. The chicken was fried very well, and the sauce was mouthwatering. It has a spice level of 2 on the menu, but it really wasn't that spicy. I liked the brioche for the bun, but it also wasn't the best brioche I've had Khao Soi Beef Burger (8/10): Very delicious khao soi sauce. It just works so well. I loved the egg noodles. I think the disappointing part of this dish was the burger itself, actually. The meat was a bit underwhelming. The bun was the same as the green curry sandwich - I think the texture of the bread left something to be desired Tom Yum Shrimp (7.5/10): The portion sizes are way too small. $24 for what looks like an appetizer. Nonetheless, this dish had a delicious sauce and all of the ingredients were tender Tom Kha White Sauce (6/10): They unfortunately didn't have cod, so they subbed in shrimp. The dish sounded really good in theory, but was also a tiny portion size and not as good as the tom yum shrimp. Seasoned Fries (8/10): double-fried and deliciously crisp. I wish they came with a sauce other than ketchup, but oh well. Great side! Mango Sticky Rice (8/10): Mango sorbet was delicious. The mango itself was okay. Sticky rice was great. Sweetness level was perfect. The service was very odd. We were ignored by servers at every step of the process, from walking in and getting a table, to waiting for someone to even acknowledge us after being seated, to ordering, to getting water, to getting the check, to flagging someone down to pay our bill. At first, I chalked it up to the restaurant being packed. As the night wore on, the restaurant started emptying, but for some reason the staff were just as unresponsive.
