As a lover of all things vintage/antique, walking into the Chrystie House was a dream come true. It truly felt like being transported back to more than a century ago. The rooms were furnished in a historical style and even the bathroom was adorably retro. Each morning we were warmly greeted by our host Lynn, who provided a delicious homemade breakfast. Like the beautiful home, she was charming and delightful. She even gave us great insight about the Dia Beacon. The Chrystie house is an easy 20 minute walk to Dia Beacon and the Main Street, so it is easily accessible from all the main highlights of the town. I highly recommend staying at this charming B&B!

What…read morewe got was less "quaint Victorian B&B" and more "the kind of decrepit clapboard house where horror films open with a chainsaw." The website promised "a few minutes" from the station and "close to everything." Translation: a sweaty 20-minute uphill slog with luggage, and "everything" meaning the Sunoco gas station across the street. Which, ironically, turned out to be the best part of the stay. Inside, the welcome was a fog of burned pancake fat, which gave way to mildew and damp as we reached our quarters. We were put in 'The White Room', downstairs, right next to the kitchen -- which, naturally, had the shared ensuite bathroom tacked on. Yes: an ensuite. For the kitchen. Nothing says "boutique comfort" quite like brushing your teeth while someone fries bacon two feet away. The only thing it had in common with the Beatles' 'White Album' was that both left me baffled as to why anyone thought it worth releasing. The room itself was tiny, the paint flaking off the window frames, a duvet stripped of its cover, and the general feel of a place assembled with chewing gum and denial. For this, on a holiday weekend, we paid a small fortune -- money I would honestly rather have set on fire in the street. And those glowing reviews? So wildly out of step with reality that you'd be forgiven for thinking they were written by doting relatives, or perhaps an industrious little bot farm somewhere east of Minsk. Beacon is lovely. Febreze was heroic. But this B&B? Never again.

Driving through this idyllic town, the GPS said we've arrived at our destination. Going up to the house, I see a busted up gravel driveway covered in leaves. I navigate to the front door and grabbed my overnight bag. Wet leaves or ice, I wouldn't be a happy guest. We're greeted by Neil and he gives us a small tour of the common space. The furnishings are very unique. I can see the owners antiquing in the area and finding these treasured pieces. As far as shared items, there is a Keurig coffee machine. It'll do in a pinch. At 7am I wanted coffee and the machine water was empty. I had to knock on the kitchen door and wait until someone answered to refill the machine. Breakfast was amazing! For me at least, when I'm on vacation I'll have French Toast and pancakes during my stay. My wife? She broke down the menu: a pitcher of orange juice, cake with sorbet, fruit plate with a boxed cookie on the side along with pancakes. My wife reminded me this is not an adult breakfast, it's all sugar! She asked for egg whites and Neil was flustered. They figured it out and served my wife. Neil grabbed me at the common area and said he explained breakfast during check in. I didn't know that we had to speak up right then, usually there's a sheet? The next day Darlene made some amazing pumpkin pancakes. My wife took 1/2 of one and we were only served two. So breakfast for me was good but I was aggravated both mornings. I was looking forward to kicking back and enjoying a bottle of wine, maybe smoke a cigar? Neil said there is no smoking on the premise. Ok, that's out. I asked for an ice bucket and was told he'll dig one up. It never came. It really didn't matter because the outside furniture on the deck, it wasn't inviting. The pillows looked wet and old. There is no other seating outside, no fire pit, nada. I brought my bottle to the next B&B... With any B&B, you should be offered quality shower products. First off, there was no soap bar? I don't like liquid soap, much less Dial. The shampoo, was a tiny bottle, something cheap. I had to buy a bar of soap and use a travel shampoo I had from another hotel. Our room was, interesting. More unique styled furniture. Lighting up the room was inadequate. There were small lamps but it wasn't enough. Neil said the thermostat for the entire house was right here. If we made the temperature warmer or colder, the entire house temperature will change. The same with the WiFi, the router was in our room?! That's a lot of pressure.. I didn't touch anything. After we checked out and I drove down busted driveway, I was glad to be leaving. 3 Yelp stars, my stay was average. I didn't feel pampered or relaxed.

Rev Jim was super flexible with Zoom/Skype video chat meetings because of this, and I even had the opportunity to visit him for an in-person meeting at his home when I was in town at the Beacon Hermitage. I must say this is a beautiful, stunning, and artsy property if you get the chance to visit! We worked with Rev Jim for a couple of years leading up to the wedding where he provided us a questionnaire for my husband and I to fill out separately with some personal questions about our relationship so he could learn more about us as a couple. I highly recommend taking this seriously as he was able to truly personalize and incorporate our love into the ceremony this way! Rev Jim also provided a document listing the different types of ceremonies to select what suits us best. We aren't the most religious, but wanted a little mention of god's blessing to appease our family, and he nailed that. He was also very accommodating with having a couple of family members conduct a reading, as well as allow time for my step-sister (who is a musical theatre professional) to sing at the beginning of our ceremony. We also decided for our unity ceremony to do the handfasting which truly "tied the knot"! During our reception, we received so many compliments from our guests on his ceremony, and even had some friends ask if they can use him for their wedding! He was so positively impactful and is someone to remember forever as such a big part of our special day! Check out his Instagram (@revjimrooney) to get a glimpse of what he does! You won't be disappointed!! Thank you for all the hard work and dedication!!!

Didn't help that it was freezing out making the room temp very cold to put it politely. However the main issue was 0 courtesy from the staff. I called the front desk multiple times throughout the day and early evening to check if power was back so we could go back to hotel (me and wife were just trying to have a relaxing day at hotel). Simple message as "Can you please give us a courtesy call back letting us know if power is back on or not, we would greatly appreciate it." Never received a call back which was greatly disappointing. So we spent who knows how much money for a day/night at hotel and spent about 1 hour there excluding sleeping. Again I understand only so much one can do about power but the staff just didn't seem to really care about the guests (or at least us).
