We had a good bottom paint job a few years ago so we decided we would check him out for a gas tank replacement since the work with fiberglass we thought this would be good. Well, wrong! After two months in the yard we came out with an engine now working and needing replacement. Stick with painting and you should be okay. Any other work go elsewhere. Also concerning our bill payment. My wife put a partial payment on her credit card about half way through the work which was okay and reasonable with us. We told Joe we would pay off the rest of the bill when we picked up the boat and approved the work. The work was so bad that Joe posted a charge to my wife's credit card way before we saw the boat again. An illegal charge and not approved by us. So if you go in for work anything you put down do it in cash and do not give your card number. read more

I had the bottom done on my steel trawler done by these guys in 2015. They were to sand, prep any bare spots with two coats of epoxy, then apply two coats of bottom paint. I caught the worker applying copper bottom paint directly on the bare steel. Unfortunately he had already painted 90% of the bottom so I couldn't tell where he had painted over the bare steel. I just had the boat on the grid and found that he had done it all over the boat. I am now looking at a complete sandblast in the entire bottom because of them. They told me at the time that this was an accident and that they don't normally operate this way. The first person that I spoke to at the yacht club after they the bums had done this, told me that they had left paint blisters on their boat and made them redo it. Doug read more

We've used B.U.M.S. twice before, in 2015 and 2017. The service and price both times was quite good. Unfortunately Joe V. has left the business. Service, quality and communication have gone south. No one wrote anything down about what we wanted done or how to contact us. We asked for the shaft and strut zincs to be replaced. It was never done. The metal parts were all cleaned and coated with the appropriate antifouling, which was also sprayed over the old shaft zincs. The work on the bottom and the keel was good. Was quoted 2-3 days to finish the job originally. There was extra work required for the keel, yet they only billed 8.75 hours total. Nonetheless the boat spent 17 days on the hard of which 12 were working days. Very poor communication throughout. Rarely got through to a live person when I called. Call backs were slow and inconsistent. Expected to be met by Jimmy when we hauled out. He was nowhere to be found. Two of his crew happened by and performed the expected pressure wash. Jimmy wasn't prepared with a bill when we expected to launch the boat. The bill arrived minutes before the Travel Lift. Sad to see what had been a good company in such bad shape. read more

Just had our boat waxed and the bottom painted. The prep on the paint job was thorough and the bottom paint appears to be good. Very disappointed in the quality of the hull wax - missed spots, barnacle residue left on boot, stains on bow not removed. All any of us as consumers can do is take our business elsewhere - and I will. read more

I brought my 21' Trophy to BUMS to have the bottom painted. I selected BUMS because of its reputation and reasonable prices. Unlike some shops BUMS charged by the boat's waterline length, not the boat's overall length. On my way to Port Townsend my Mercruiser engine overheated and I had to be towed into the port. When I asked Joe if he could recommend someone to fix the engine he said they worked on engines in addition bottom painting and other boat maintenance issues and he would take a look at it and call me back with the damage. It turned out that the pulley had come off the power steering unit and thrown the belt, which shut down the water cooler. The engine had gotten so hot it had melted the plastic drain plugs in the head. The engine needed a new power steering pump and several other items including a bushing on the tensioner and a new thermostat. Joe was able to locate a used power steering pump for $500 less than a new one and machined a bushing for the tensioner because that part was no longer stocked. All the work was performed promptly and BUMS returned my boat cleaner than when I brought it in. All in all a completely satisfactory experience.
