I would not even give this business a 1 star rating. I had to put some star rating. We took our boat to them to install a fish finder fix the fuel gauge. Instead of calling after they diagnosed the issue to give me a quote, they went ahead with TWELVE DAMN hours of work.... 12. Ridiculous joke of a professional business, $1200 later...mind you it was fish finders and a freaking gas gauge.... So the other reason they suck and I hope they run out of business someday, is one of the fish finders quit working the second time we went out and te gas gauge Went out also. The bow light was working when we brought it in, guess what, wasn't working when I picked it up. I spoke with the manager he said there was nothing they could do about it because we didn't buy a warranty for the work they did, ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???? After buying a boat, I needed a mechanic to check for any problems and to address a few mechanical issues. Thankfully the previous owner had kept the past service records and while looking through the boats history I noticed the same issues being repeatedly fixed. The previous mechanic was no longer working on boats however he suggested Gold Star Marine. I called and was quickly given an appointment to bring the boat in. They called back after looking over the engine and identified some problem areas that have been plaguing the boat for years. I'm quite pleased with the outcome! In the past, with previous mechanics, a bandaid was used. Gold Star fixed the issues and went above and beyond my expectations. The new owner and team are friendly and professional. I have to admit, I was skeptical due to past reviews but soon realized that a new owner and team are there now and I'm glad I gave the team a chance. I had called Gold Star to do some work prior to seeing the Yelp reviews, and was really concerned. I called them asking about these reviews, and they had recently changed ownership, (not the same new owners as in the other review here.) I believe it was in 2016 that Cory Armstrong bought the company, now known as ACI (Armstrong Consolidated Boats). I did complete long block replacements on twin Chrysler inboards, which turned into a series of problems caused by the engine supplier. They stood by me, and went above and beyond any other shop would do, as we sent the blocks back and went to another engine supplier. These guys were so helpful and honest though the whole process, and earned my loyalty and friendship. Great guys! read more

Gold Star Marine's business motto should be "Turning Dreams into Nightmares". I recently had extensive work done on my 47' sailboat by Gold Star Marine including an engine repower and the installation of a hydronic heating system. In general, Gold Star Marine failed in three critical ways. They failed in workmanship, they failed in management, and they failed in communication. They did such a poor job that I am finding it difficult to capture how bad it was. The work was sloppy, unprofessional, haphazard, inefficient and potentially dangerous. Wires were left dangling, hoses lying in the bilge, and work was left incomplete. I am still cleaning up the mess they left behind: sawdust, fiberglass, tools and parts. Frequently work had to be redone because it wasn't done right the first time and I was billed for it all. For example, the motor mounts were not correct and had to be re installed. The heating system was not properly installed. They did not understand the system and were learning on the job (and billing me for this). After I researched the issues, I had to educate them on the proper installation and they then charged me for fixing the problem. Most recently, the alternator mounting bolt worked its way out and cut most of the way thru the alternator/waterpump belt. Fortunately I discovered the problem before the belt failed. This is the belt that drives the cooling pump and would have been a dangerous failure. Employees were unsupervised and planning was non existent. Management was uninvolved, not knowledgeable and unresponsive. The project took about 4 times as long as estimated. Weeks would go by with no work being performed. Work was done out of order and inefficiently. The employees had no respect for management and it showed in the lack of quality of their work. The only communication that I received from Gold Star were periodic invoices. They generally did not respond to my emails or phone calls. Not once did they initiate a call or email. Never once did they hold good to a promised timeline. I am a reasonable guy. My approach is to find top quality professionals and let them do their job. Unfortunately, I made a mistake with Gold Star Marine. They are not top quality professionals. The owners of Gold Star Marine seem to believe in the philosophy of over promise and under deliver, just give me your money. Are they malicious or just incompetent? From my perspective, the customer, it doesn't matter. They should not be in a business where quality matters. read more

I turned to this business because it was given profile in a local boating club I belong to. I knew the problems that existed on my boat and called then for help. The service by the repair specialist was confirming of the problems but receiving an invoice for $400 with no repair is just unbelievable and not even a call back from the owner to work a deal! read more

I recently had Gold Star perform work on my 31-ft sailboat. The work included replacing all engine and drain hoses and replacing several thru-hulls. I also had the bottom painted, all the winches serviced and all the electronics - plotter, vhf, wind and depth. Very pleased with the work performed and when an problem surfaced later they were quick to resolve it. Overall please with the work performed and service provided. read more

Their communication is absolutely terrible ---- no not terrible, it is non-existent. Not once did they return a phone call, or an email message. Not one did they initiate a phone call. My only method of communication would be to drive to Port Townsend, force the guy in the office to listen to me. He would look at his computer and, then always the service manager or mechanic were not available right now and "he will have them call me." They took three weeks, and then they didn't fix the problem -- an engine problem. Nor are they interested in what telling me what needs to be done further. We picked up the boat -- and it was filthy. Great all over every thing. The Service manager sent "his man" out to clean it -- a five minute spray down. I then received a bill for 1/2 hour for $45.00. I will have my due. Word of mouth will be my revenge. read more

In addition he replaced a faulty bilge pump that was in a very tough place to reach. He finished the job in 2 hours, did not charge me for "drive time," and was very professional. Gold Star Marine has new ownership effective in January 2016 and I am pleased to tell you that we had excellent work done and at a reasonable cost. We did bottom paint, prop speed, and a fuel system repair. This was the 4th bottom painting on the boat and the paint was getting a little thick. Gold Star removed the excess paint with careful sanding and did an exceptional job of re-applying the new coatings. The Propspeed application was the best I have seen. New owners, by their own admission, know nothing about boats. My experience was significantly less than okay and left me wondering why they would purchase a business in an industry they admit they know nothing about. I guess I should have known better than to trust our boat to their care. In my opinion, they failed to complete the work in anything close to minimal standards. Paint work (again, my opinion) looked like a first grader was in control. They left cleaning / polishing residue in several spots and four months (now seven months) after paying the bill, still waiting for them to finish attaching the rub rail. I've done business with Gold Star Marine for a few years. Both with the previous owner and the new owner. I do not agree with Grant C's review. I had a visit with the new owner about my recent boat repair. The repair was done by the business' technicians under the previous owner. The contract between the previous owner and the new owner was to cover warranty work for a specific time. Now my 20 foot boat with a Volvo inboard was done last year and I used it once and parked it on its trailer. This year I discovered an oil leak in the general area. The cylinder head had been replaced and the valve cover leaked. Now the contract between the owners for my repair ended 4 months ago, so legally they did not have to fix it with out cost to me. But instead of doing the legal thing they went above and beyond and did the moral thing and fixed it free. Now, for the maintenance by the marine technicians at Gold Star, I find them very knowledgeable and providing expert repairs. I had the cylinder head replaced for a bad cylinder compression (because its a 1982 motor they had to search the Pacific Northwest for a cylinder head) and the outdrive overhauled for a gear grease leak. The only issue that turned up was a valve cover oil leak which they fix after the warranty had passed. Its not a must for a business owner to have knowledge of the business they own.
