Upon searching for a unique restaurant in the area, we stumbled upon Boukan which was rated highly online. I was excited to try Haitian/Creole food as the menu had several dishes that stood out. We arrived on a Saturday night and found it oddly quiet with only one or two tables aside from our own. The interior was spacious and resembled a warehouse, which may be due to the fact that the location hosts events on particular nights (i.e. dancing, DJ, open mic). We initially wanted to order the Shrimp Plantain Bowls and Tasso Beef Fritay, but were told they were sold out of both shrimp and beef even though it was only 7-8 pm. Instead, we had the Griyo (pork) Fritay and the Caesar Jerk Chicken Sandwich. I enjoyed the assortment of items in the fried platter, with the akra being my favourite. The pork was tasty, but a bit dry upon frying. The dip that came with the dish was delicious paired with the fried fluffy dumplings, which acted as the perfect vessel to soak up the sauce. The sandwich was decent - my partner enjoyed the Caesar garlic spread and the croissant as the bun was a nice touch, but the jerk chicken was not as flavourful compared to what I've had at Caribbean places. We were also overcharged for the sandwich ($19 rather than $17 as listed on the menu). The service was friendly throughout with no issues. Overall, if you are looking to try something different or to have some authentic Haitian food, I highly recommend supporting this local business. Boukan brings the vibe and the fry. Their new location has the Haitian spirit of fun and dance, with its music, decor, and an endless amount of fried food and flowing alcohol. Stopped by for dinner and got: - Boukanye Burger: Completey vegan (even the 'bun' was plantain). The 'patty' was an interesting mix of beans, mushrooms and spices - pretty tasty. - Shrimp Creole Fritay: Fried goodness. Sweet and green plantains, fried dumplings and spicy coleslaw surround sauce-bathed shrimp. Would have liked more shrimp (and it to be less rubbery). But if you like all that fry, definitely get this. - Jamaican Rum Cake: Didnt realize this would be a cheesecake. Strong enough taste of rum to make it interesting. - Rum Punch: A bit on the sweeter side but still pretty good. This place serves Haitian food, which is a nice change from the usual "Caribbean" (i.e. Jamaican). Had the small pork fritay & added on baked macaroni pie. The pork was quite tasty. It was fried & moist & tender enough. The coleslaw was spicy & refreshing: a little tart & crisp. The flat fried plantain was ok. The long plantain was better: crispier, with more taste. The gravy was pretty tasty. The fried dumplings were decent. The macaroni pie was pretty good, but it was a pricy addon ($8.19 - not on the menu). Banana beignets with mango sauce: the sauce good & the beignets decent; they were moister than the average beignet (maybe that's the Haitian style or because they were banana). We got here early in the day so ignore the emptiness of the place. As a Haitian, it is hard to find an authentic restaurant. My mom and I were in town to celebrate my brother's wedding and decided to take my new sister in law here. IMMEDIATELY as we walked in, it smelled and felt like home. From the music to the welcoming staff. While everyone was amazing, I adored the bartender (Teisha). She made us feel like family. Now the food, I wish we took a picture before we ate but as soon as they put the plate on the table i just KNEWWWWW it was going to be incredible. I was not wrong. I hope everyone who worked on it in the kitchen as an incredible day. As for Teisha, she was so attentive and helpful. She made my sister's in law's first haitian experience wonderful. I will be coming back to toronto and driving arrogant here from the airport with my luggage in hand. Teisha deserves a raise TODAY. As long as my brother lives in toronto, I will be coming back! Wow ! Fantastic food and wonderful service. This was my first time at a Haitian restaurant and really loved the experience. I like how you get to try a bit of everything with the platters. I did the vegan platter which comes with various appetizers such as plantain , fried dough, pickled slaw etc. My dining partner did the chicken platter. Our server JJ was very friendly and explained the menu quite well. They are a new restaurant (since December 2019) and seems to be quite popular. For what you get, the dishes are very reasonably priced. I really liked the St Michel appetizer given the combo of savoury fish with sweet plantain 5/5. The vegan balls had a unique aesthetic but tasty albeit a bit on the dry side 4/5. Small restaurant so it might be hard to grab a seat but we snagged a couple stools by the window. Will definitely be back to sample more from the diverse menu and support a wonderful local spot ! read more

Incredible food -- I highly recommend the fritay platters because you get an excellent variety of flavours and textures in a nice meal-sized portion. Boukan is definitely a must. The +30 min drive was so worth it! It's a small place but it definitely felt like home. The Art Deco is perfect and I love the idea of the signing walls where you can write your your appreciation. The staff A++ The service was great, the waiting time was perfect. So nice to have a Haitian spot in the Beaches! The owners are amazing and so welcoming. The space itself is tiny, but cozy with local art upon the walls. Most people do take out, but you can contact the restaurant to make reservations (highly recommended). Now onto the food...my go-to is the vegan fritay. I'm a meat-eater, but I love this dish! Those quinoa balls just hit different. And the special sauce compliments the plantain and fried dumplings perfectly. I also enjoyed beignets with mango sauce. Where do I even start. I will start by saying that this was my first time trying Haitian/ Creole cuisine and I was literally blown away. My food was absolutely delicious. The pork was tender, the goat meat was tender, the wings were delicious, and everything was well packaged for takeout. I was sure to ask my Haitian friends if the food was authentic and they confirmed that it was most definitely was. The ambiance is amazing, they also display beautiful artwork as well and the restaurant is very clean. I also want to add that the customer service is great as well the chef helped us choose the best options from the menu and he was very kind. Will I be returning to Boukan? Unassuming from the outside and not very big on the inside but the food is very good. Did not know what Haitian food consisted of the the owner said that it is traditional street food that you would eat (in Haiti) with your fingers. We had the Fritay (pronounced Fritah) Shrimp Creole (the shrimp awesome) and Vegan. They were really good! This cozy spot serves delicious food, and the people are warm and friendly. This place is small and just opened in December, but it's clear that they're serious foodies and know what they're doing. We started with the vegan 3 fritay bol -- it was a mini black-bean patty on top of fried plantain with some spicy coleslaw. For my main, I had the vegan Burger Boukanye. I never had a plant-based burger before, but it was really good -- mostly black bean with some mushrooms, made in house and served on a fresh brioche bun. My husband had the medium chicken fritay box, which was huge. It came with different kinds of plantains and fritters, with coleslaw and sauce -- I sampled everything, and it was very good. We went to Boukan a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon following a recommendation by a friend of my wife's. It's well out of the way for us, but the trip was well worth it. Short version: GO THERE NOW. It's that good. Longer version: We ordered the fritay box ("fried box"), which contained a selection of, well, fried foods: marinade, griot, plantain two ways, rice with green peas (rice was actually a side dish) and beignets (a kind of donut; if you've ever had Tiny Tims, it's similar) for desert. All of it was outstanding and the flavours really popped. The griot was especially delicious and, as far as I could tell, everything was cooked to perfection. Service was great and the host/proprietor was friendly and helpful. It's a small place with about five two-seater tables, a bar that seats three and a two-seater outside. Decor is fresh and modern, featuring a selection of bright paintings illustrating Haitian history and people from the African diaspora. We were told it would be 20 minutes for our order, but I think we got it in more like 10 (that could be because these are COVID times and we were the sole customers), so no issues with that aspect of the service either. Recommending this place is a no-brainer and we're already trying to figure out how we can justify making the trek out there more often. Like, weekly. read more

This little place is your chance to enjoy French Creole food in the Haitian tradition. Although I've heard the burgers are good, I wanted to try the fritay: tender bites of seasoned fried chicken, beef, pork or vegetable, served with plantain, spicy cole slaw, tangy sauce and a delicious fry bread that could be addictive.
