The food was so delicious here! The true star though was our server, Jodie, who really made our entire experience so memorable. He was extremely attentive to our table, was so pleasant to chat with and recommended really great food options. The shrimp add-on to the braised oxtail bowl was recommended by Jodie and we're so glad we did it. My personal favourite was the doubles here. We went for the spiciest level and it was amazing. I came here on a Friday night with a friend. We sat at the bar where a charming young bartender was working. He made me a very tasty Rum Punch and kindly subbed the Malibu rum for me. We shared the fish cakes, which were very tasty, though a bit doughy for my taste (I was told that this is a feature that is actually what people like about it). The mayo had a nice gentle kick to it. We then had the grilled jerk chicken wings which were humongous! They were tasty and well cooked, albeit a tad salty. The oxtail was decadent! There was no calories spared in that dish, with generous use of drippings in the delicious rice. The oxtail was also delicious and unctuous. Definitely a sharing dish! (Ummm okay,) 2 min later they put to go containers on our table and the bill. I was annoyed asked the table beside us if they were told to leave and they said yes. I asked to speak with an owner. I explained that we were really enjoying ourselves and we didn't appreciate the delivery of them dismissing us there was no time limit mentioned to us or any warnings. She then informed us that it was in the email when we made the reservation and then told the waiter she should have told us, the table beside us had a different server and they were never told about a time limit either. Food 4/5 Service 3/5 - I left feeling dismissed completely killed the vibe which is why I'm leaving my review at a 3. Delivery is key. Appetizers Spinach four cheese dip- 4/5 super rich with flavour, but bland could use a hint of spice. Plantain chips were delicious Fish cakes - 5/5 my first time having fish cakes they were delicious but the mango habanero sauce it came with is what made it perfect shrimp tacos - 4/5 it comes with two tacos we did wish that it came with three it was tasty the shrimp are grilled Mains Jerk pork sandwich - 4/5 you get a generous amount of meat. Got a few things for takeout: - Jerk Chicken Bowl: Great rub - not overly hot but tastefully spicy. Chicken itself was well cooked, and they gave 4 sizeable pieces. Rice was properly dry, which made the sauce pop even more. Would have liked more of the plump plantains, peas and slaw. - Oxtail Bowl: Similar to the jerk chicken bowl, but this had oxtail and a whole lot of gravy. Oxtail was braised well (tender and tasty). A bit too heavy on the gravy for me, even if it tasted pretty good. - Uncle Ben's Saltfish Cake: The only disappointing part of the meal. I would have liked it to be a bit less doughy with more fish. I will try this place again soon when I have a bigger appetite for a main meal. I will note that I thought it was a bit pricey for the portion size. For example the corn was $8 for a single cob cut into two and rolled with the spices, sauce and coconut bits. To be honest, overall food and atmosphere was pretty ok and the service was good as well but overall value wasn't there. Appetizer was again pretty interesting but the the portion size was pretty small for the price range and entree especially jambalaya did not taste like jambalaya at all... flavor concentration was lacking and tasted quite simple perhaps because it had too much sausage (that would have overpowered). Drink was also pretty bad I tried two mojitos and both of them were pretty thin in flavor. Overall I wanted to give 3.5 stars but perhaps little more toward 3 stars overall. I have been to Sugar Kane quite a few times in the last couple of years. I started going during the pandemic and liked what I saw so I just kept on going. There are a quite a few things that I really like about Sugar Kane. First, the decorum of the place. Sugar Kane resembles what you would have seen on the classic prime time show New York Undercover. Elegant, yet with a certain sense of street smart. Nice artwork adorns the walls, and you get a warm and cozy feeling about the place. Secondly, the service is top notch. Me and my crew were 4 Black Englishmen, and we were served by a young South African. He was cool, friendly, had a very pleasant smile throughout, and made us feel special. Also, what gave him even more props in our eyes was that he had played Football/Soccer. As we have all played in our lives, we liked the fact that we could engage with him in one of our favourite passions. In fact, every time I have gone to Sugar Kane the service has been outstanding. Thirdly, the food is good. Yesterday, I had the Jerk Chicken sandwich, and it was delicious. Every time I have gone to Sugar Kane, I have had a different meal, in which I have thoroughly enjoyed. They have a wide selection that is sure to please everyone. Last night was the first time that I got to hear the live music. I have missed hearing live music the last few years, as the pandemic closed a couple of regular joints for me like Harlem. It felt good to hear a live band play again, and they were good. This was my first time going to SugarKane. I understand that it is owned by three sisters, and I did get to meet one of them when she came to the table. This is a black owned business and they're doing amazing Caribbean food. I had the oxtail, which was absolutely succulent. I also had a sorrel sangria cocktail. I've been craving it ever since. It was so delicious. The service was impeccable. And the restaurant itself is really beautifully done. It's a combination of booths and tables and chairs. And it's really decorated quite nicely. Some of the paintings are gorgeous. One of the things that I really appreciated was that there were lovely, feminine touches in the bathroom, including products that people could use. Loved it. So kudos to her for coming over with a smile, but my friend kind of shut her down. My friend and I didn't really like the blackened shrimp tacos; thought they lacked that true blackened flavour and texture. Shrimps tasted like they were regularly boiled and then then lightly dusted with a little bit of jerk and salt. We were a bit mixed on the jerk corn. They're very generous with their alcohol drinks if you know what I mean (no complaints there). Fish cakes were perfectly crisp without being greasy. For the mains we ordered the Cajun chicken pasta and the creole jambalaya. The pasta sauce was flavourful, creamy, and had a great kick. The chicken was a bit dry but the sauce paired well with it. The creole jambalaya- I don't even know how to describe it but it had an addictive flavour to it. The kick doesn't hit you until the end of your bite leaving you wanting more. It was dry except for the little sauce they give you and was all rice. If you're going to serve shrimp in a Jambalaya may I suggest instead of 16/20's you try 21/30's or even smaller and use more sausage. I feel abused by the place what with all the crap going on these days. I dan't normally make comments but gosh, this is stupid! I don't need or want excuses. I wont be back. Finally got to check out this place last night, as I'd been waiting to go once covid restrictions eased up. We made a reservation, and good we did, as all tables were full by 545pm. The server was extremely nice and friendly. I did feel bad as it looked like only two girls were working, so while there was a delay and since some things were overlooked, but honestly it didn't phase us. The rum punch was delish and thirst quenching. The pimento dip with the plantain and bake (fried pita) went so well together, and was the perfect chip to dip ratio. I had the jerk chicken alfredo and it was amaze balls. It was creamy, loaded with chicken, perfectly spiced, and delish. I wish I could've eaten dessert but I was a stuffed turkey. For two people with an appetizer, two mains, two drinks each, it came to 100 bucks minus tip. Weekends they have live entertainment so I'll definitely be back for that.
