I love Boulder Creek. It did take a bit of work to forgive it post flood but I am happy to announce that my relationship with the creek is no longer on the bedrocks. Year round I have seen people fishing in it's crisp waters and you just know summer is near/here with the CU students bouncing through the rapids on air mattresses, bike tubes, and inner tubes. All I can say is that I didn't want to go in the creek in the first place. I was scared ok! The water was fast, people were screaming, and you hear about the deaths every year. I didn't want last year to be mine. But, when you are with two guys, they talk you into it and make you feel obligated to show off your Sheman skills. So, to the gas station we went, bought our overpriced intertubes, blew them up, tied them to the top of the car and headed up a few blocks to go to the creek. We were not the only ones going for the adventure, this is a very popular summer activity in Boulder for people of all ages... and that is what probably makes it the most dangerous. Park the bus, hike up the path to a good spot and plop your tube in for a cold rush. Zoom down the creek, going through scary rapids that more often then not spill you off of your tube, under the water and into someone else. After screaming my lungs off and almost losing my bikini top three times, we reached the end and I was happy as hell. SUMMERTIME CREEK FUN!!!!! I love the creek. I lived in Gold Run and right there was the perfect diving hole! (i never dove i was too scared, but jumping in was fun) Lots of people, lots of dogs, lots of beer(listen to kym, only cans!). Always a great time. The first time is a little scary and tubing is a little scary but i just like to frolic and jump in the really deep part (about 6 ft deep, only for a few yards). Yes its cold. Its a creek. But... you get used to it. Watch out for kayaks. And wear shoes. The rocks are sharp and you can lose your balance. Chaco's and Crocs work great. Flip flops not so much. Okay, a scary thing happened where a dead raccoon came floating down the creek that i had just been swimming in and some 8 year old boy poked it and it was SOOO gross. We discovered Boulder Creek when we were looking for a place to go tubing. We rented tubes in Denver and traveled a short distance to the hip college town of Boulder. There were a few socially distanced groups gathered along the creek edge, but not as many as you would think for a popular area like this. We launched our tubes and proceeded to drift down the creek. At first, I thought it would be like a lazy river experience but it turned out to be pretty wild! There are a few areas that create low level rapids so you have to be careful not to lose your tube or injure yourself on the rocks. Judging by the amount of small kids partaking in tubing, you wouldn't know this until you set off down the creek. I would recommend sturdy water shoes and helmets if you want to be safe. Whatever you do, veer right at the fork or prepare for a steep drop. Thank goodness we were warned by a Good Samaritan before we met certain doom. There is quite a trek back to your car of you let yourself float too far, so be mindful of that. My only regret is not having a gocam because I wasn't able to take photographs otherwise. All in all, this was one of the most exhilarating activities I've ever experienced and we will definitely be back to Boulder Creek for either tubing or kayaking. read more

Hell yeah! Is it summer yet? Here are my TOP TEN TIPS for Tubing at Boulder Creek: 1. Buy your tubes somewhere other than "on the way there." They're overpriced if you get them from that corner gas station (you'll know the one... everyone else is buying them there too). However, you can fill any tube-- no matter where you bought it-- right there for free. Nice! 2. Good luck finding parking on the weekends. I've got a secret spot. No, I'm not telling you where it is. 3. Leave the skimpy string bikini at home. You're going to lose it. And hey... this is a family-oriented place. Keep the girls in check. If you wouldn't wear it to surf in, don't wear it here. 4. Remove any jewelery you care about. This includes wedding rings. (NOTE TO HUSBAND: THIS INCLUDES WEDDING RINGS) 5. Bring your beer in cans, not bottles. Bottles break. Broken glass + lots of people in bare feet = really bad. Not to mention extremely un-eco-conscious. And this is BOULDER, you know. People won't hesitate to call you out for bringing bottles up there. Let's keep the peace. 6. Speaking of bare feet, don't even think about it. Wear some old tennies, Tevas, Chacos or even those 1989 Nike Aquasocks. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. 7. Don't be stupid. It's true that somebody dies in those rapids every year... but it's almost always because they were tubing away from the "main drag" too early in the season. You're risking your life if you brave these rapids before mid-June. The water is simply too high and too fast. You may think you're a badass, but Mother Nature begs to differ. 8. Don't be scared. Yes, it's fast. Yes, you're going to flip. Yes, you're going to fall out of your tube. Yes, some big hairy fat guy is going to land square on your head while you're stuck trying to paddle your way out of an eddy. It's all part of the fun. 9. Bring your dogs, but make sure they get along with other dogs (and kids!). There are lots of them off leash here (yes, dogs AND kids). 10. Have fun! I love Boulder Creek. Boulder Creek... Tubing and ropeswinging and swimming, hiking along the paths, and major photospots. I loved bringing my dogs here for a good romp, and the tubing is some of the best ever. It ranges from tame to "oh crap we're gonna die." (This, in my opinion, is a good thing.) The people-watching is top-notch. Tips: Wear those rubber-bootie style water shoes. You'll lose your flip flops if you wear 'em, and scrape the hell out of your feet if you don't cover up somehow. Also they help with the whole traction thing when you want to exit the flowing creek. If you're going on a long tube mission, have a car to shuttle you the miles back up, and trade off who's driving and who's tubing. (Walking is great, and not even that far, but if the wind picks up, you'll be FREEEEZING.) Bring a cooler with drinks, extra clothes and towels, and peroxide and band aids. You can get some mad scrapes and you want to clean that water out of them quickly. Do NOT buy your tube at that Conoco. The one where everyone else is. You can find them a wee bit farther away for Wwwwaaaaaaaaay Cheaper. Check the water report: This creek is often closed because of water levels. Safety First!! Oh, yeah, and it helps if you know how to swim. So you don't, like, die or something. read more

Oh, Eben G Fine, your park is a tubing mecca. BUT! I have just a few words of advice for tubing in the creek, with apologies to kym b. for the duplicates... Don't even think about renting a tube. For the price of a rental you can purchase. Even if you're "never going to go again" you're going to go again. Pump the tube up. Do not tube on a partially-inflated tube. It will hurt your butt. And back. I have scars if you don't believe me. Go in a group. Form a chain! Not only is it awesome to share, you dramatically reduce the risk of getting stuck in the churn of the rapids. Seriously. It goes from every-damn-time to never. Leave the shades at home. And if you find a pair of black smith sliders, let me know, ok? It would probably be fine if you had croakies (you know, the nerdy things that hold your sunglasses on your head). Avoid the spring runoff. And the lows nearing the end of the summer. It's most dangerous when the discharge is high, and besides, the water will be cold. And not just cold, just-melted cold. And when it's low you'll scrape your bass on the rocks. Every damn rock. Don't bring alcohol in alcohol containers. Nalgene? Fine. Beer can? That's a ticket. Boulder police troll the place sometimes. Something about fire danger blah blah blah. Sucked. I had all these burgers and nowhere to grill them. Don't stand up in the middle of the creek expecting people to go around you. Yeah, that's right, guy, I'm talkin' to you. If you're standing, you won't be for very long... And that IS a threat. Go fast over the rapids. It decreases the chances of getting stuck. If you do get stuck in an eddy, you can try to paddle out, but it's going to be hard. Wait around until the next person comes down the chute and pushes you out while you cackle with glee as they get stuck. Hold on. Do I even have to spell this out? Get out before you hit the library and it gets wide and boring, save for the occasional hidden ass-breaker. If you lose a flip flop you can probably replace it with one stuck in the river. Which translates loosely to "you will lose at least one flip flop, maybe 2, and you will see 9 or 10 on the way down." The water is cold. When you're done getting torn up by the forces of nature, you can deflate the tube (if you have one of them schraeder valves) at the conoco station on Broadway and Arapahoe. Ask the guy inside for "that little tool that takes out the valve on the tube." The key to using this tool is not to lose the valve that comes out of the tube. read more

Hold up. You mean tubing ISN'T just in the South? My Southern eyes are not deceiving me? Freaking sweet! That's right, tubing. You, a piece of rubber full of air, and the creek. Oh, and some might nice rapids too. It was incredibly cold for my delicate Southern skin, but after a while, the frostbite didn't seem so bad. It wound up being a refreshing morning and early afternoon trek through the area as the boy and I cruised downstream (despite him landing on me after a big drop off - oh the hilarity). If tubing isn't your thing, you can fish, bask in the sun, dip in your feet, swim, bring your pet, have a picnic, read a book... seriously, it's a hippie redneck animal loving paradise - pure Boulder in all it's finest glory. If you do want to tube, just purchase a tube. It's about the same price. If you're an out of towner it may not make too much sense, but maybe you could donate it to a family when you're done. Once upon a time, I was up for almost any adventure you could imagine. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way I got older and many of the things that once seemed exhilarating became downright scary. Tubing Boulder Creek is no exception. After waiting week after week for the water level to be considered "safe", we picked up some tubes last Saturday and hit the creek. The water was freezing and moved fast. While I enjoyed most of the rapids, the last stretch before the park is fast, rocky, and the inevitable flip that occurs on the last rapid was a little unsettling for me, despite being a very strong swimmer. In retrospect, the whole event was actually really fun. Call me a wimp, but my heart was pounding by the time I got out of the water and it will likely be next season before I consider braving the creek again. (One tip- the creek was slammed by the time we left around 2:30. Get there early or be prepared to be on a very crowded creek.) read more

Boulder Creek - Me going down head first - Local Flavor Near Me

I've only gone tubing down Boulder Creek twice so far, but every time I go I realize how dangerous it could be and how lucky we are to have not gotten hurt (worse). If you have the right equipment (life jacket, helmet, shoes, watersuit, and most especially a big tube), it can be tons of fun and somewhat less dangerous. I consider myself a great swimmer, and while both of my attempts have been without a life jacket, there is always a moment where you don't feel in control and you have to be able to swim while managing that intense fear, because chances are, you will flip over at some point in your trip, and that's when everything gets dangerous. You will be pulled along most likely hitting your legs and body into the rocks until you can manage to climb back onto the tube or make your way to the side of the creek, which can be difficult to get out of in most areas. read more

We got two large single tubes from whitewater tubing for $18each plus tax. Don't worry if you have a small car, they'll tie them to the top for you just remember how to tie them for the drive back. We got in at Eben g fine park. The creeks water flow didn't look too strong but once you get in on a tube it's a whole different story. I'm glad I did it, but wouldn't do it again. You WILL fall over atleast once & there's a 80% chance your legs & feet YES FEET will get minor scrapes or bruises. Second year tubing on the black inner tubes from the (no longer in business) Conoco everyone speaks of. Last year, we went when the water was pretty low and I smacked my head HARD on a rock while doing an unplanned backwards somersault underwater.. But this year, the water was a little higher (100 cfs?) and we did not have so much trouble hitting the rocks except in the shallows. I recommend doing the Eben G Fine stretch at least 2-3 times because you learn where the rocks are and how to stay upright through each feature. By the 3rd run, you can probably stay upright the whole way even if you are a complete beginner. Every time we go, we are SO cold by the end, but SO happy, too!!! Everyone hangs out there and laughs at the spills as well as retrieves things like hats, glasses (sometimes! If you can, leave your glasses in the car!!) Etc for the tubers. We saw a guy diving in wetsuit and goggles looking for treasure on the floor of the creek, haha... read more

My favorite place on Boulder Creek is just above the Red Lion Inn, a swimming hole that is clothing optional for the past 35 years. A huge rock creates a large pool that is made bigger by all of our efforts at dam building. All kinds of people come here to swim. read more

I went down the river twice. The first time it was fun, no issues going down, and I didn't flip at all. The second time the creek seemed to be moving faster but I went in anyway. I went in next to the rope swing and floated on down. At the first drop I flipped and got caught in the drop down current and had a hard time getting out of the whirlpool. It scared the crap out of me! This was my first time river tubing and I was not wearing a life vest but I was able to swim away from the drop down area. My suggestion, wear a life vest because some areas are deep. I'm 5'4 an the area I was stuck in was deeper than my height! Aside from this experience I had lot's of fun. read more
