I unfortunately have DDD, bad genetics, and have had a long medical career since the age of 16--as a CNA, a medical assistant, and an RN. Many years of lifting/bending, and schlepping. I ended up working in surgery-- which is how I met Dr. Nelson. When the pain came to a head and injections were no longer helping, I knew exactly who to go to. Dr. Nelson is casual but confident, off-the-chart intelligent but down to earth, and easy to talk to. Surgery is not a trivial thing to him, he will make sure a patient has explored all other avenues first. I have undergone two successful fusions by Dr. Nelson, one cervical, and one lumbar. I can honestly say that I could not have received better care anywhere. Thanks to him, I am now taking my boards to be a nurse practitioner where I will continue to recommend him and his team with all of my heart. Sincerely, Jodie Ferguson BSN

If I could give 0 stars or - negative stars I would!…read more Went to see Dr. V for the first time today. What a complete waste of time! The worst bedside manner. Dismissive. No concern or empathy. My total visit with him lasted 10 minutes at best. After 2 prior cervical fusions, my imaging shows severe stenosis on the right, moderate on the left, a herniated disc above my fusion, and 2mm slippage of my vertebrae at flexion and extension. My symptoms include numbness in my right hand, tingling in the back of my neck and the side of my face, and ice pick headaches in the back of my head. His response was "those symptoms don't correlate with that level. Surgery is a 50/50 chance if you'll do better. You can get another ablation or steroid shots. But degeneration is normal as we age." Maybe we can explore this as a cause: Occipital neuralgia: This is a distinct condition that is often triggered by cervical spine issues, including herniated discs. Occipital neuralgia is caused by the irritation or compression of the occipital nerves that run from the upper spine to the scalp. It is characterized by sharp, stabbing, or electric-shock-like pain that can feel very similar to an ice pick headache. Or how about it can absolutely cause the symptoms I have: A herniated disc at the C3-C4 level of the cervical spine can cause various symptoms, including: Pain: Sharp, shooting pain in the neck that may radiate down the arm into the shoulder, hand, or fingers Pain that worsens with certain movements, such as bending the neck forward or backward Numbness and Tingling: Numbness or tingling in the shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers Pins and needles sensation That was it. Off I went with the name of a chiropractor and different pain management doctor. I'm sorry but there's nothing normal about the symptoms I'm feeling. So if it's not from that level, let's figure out where it's coming from and fix it. He was absolutely horrible. I've been dealing with this for 10 years and I've never experienced a doctor who could not care less about helping. Stay away.

I have been to this hospital, several times…read more My last ED visit they kept trying to d/c me and my husband was insisted something was wrong and they needed to do add'l testing. If it wasn't for him, I could've died. After testing was done, they figured out what was wrong and they're incapable of intubating me. And, Flight for Life needed to transport me that same day, hospital is incapable of dealing with urgency of my care. My last two ED visits were so annoying! I've been admitted, multiple times and duration of my stay, I've always been released, prior than anticipated. One nurse was unable to get an IV into my vein correctly. It was bleeding out onto the floor, then tried to leave mee, while I'm bleeding all over the floor. My husband said, you need to fix the IV, my wife is bleeding all over the floor! You can't just leave her like that!! At my last hospitalization, I was assaulted by one of the RNs! She had the audacity, to tell me, I'm not entitled to break through pain meds! I told her, look lady, I've been on these meds for decades! I have fairly extensive knowledge of my meds, my illnesses and I know, what I'm talking about! The scary part, she didn't have basic knowledge meds. Plus, dealing with her, made myself exhausted! She fought with me, instead of checking and speaking with my physician and/or physician on-duty! Plus, it was recommended, I was in receipt of antibiotics, through IV, due to secondary infection. The physician ordered it, as soon, as it was decided, I would be discharged early, to go home. I was getting ready to leave, here comes that RN, insistently, made attempts to give it to me, it was the same antibiotics, same dosage, twice! I warned her that I've already, received such antibiotics and she didn't want to listen to me, I adamantly refused! Now, if, I was not in full state of mind, this nurse would've over drugged me! I have an immunosuppressed system, my liver was already failing, my GFR# continues upwards & at that time, we're unaware, my liver is diseased. We were diagnosed with cirrhosis, I returned to my specialist and she corrected me, stating it was diseased, not failed. I've got already complicated, rare kidney disease, stage III, diagnosed in 1999. I continue to go to this hospital because it's about 3 mi away from our home and by the time I need to get medical attention, this is the closest medical facility from our home. Everything else it's about 10 mi or more away from our home. The rooms are single occupancy and food is very good for hospital food. However, I suffered a stroke, fell down a flight of stairs, broke a few ribs and suffered a seizure before the EMTs got mee into the ambulance and they suggested we go to Good Sam's instead. So, they took mee to Good Sam's for hospitalization, in the ICU, because they're capable of treating me, instead of returning back to Avista.

I was admitted to the Boulder Foothills Hospital Emergency Department in Colorado on July 21, 2025…read morefor 'seizure-like activity.' The ER physician misdiagnosed the symptoms as 'psychosis' and arranged for me to be placed on an M1 hold (involuntary psychiatric commitment) and transferred to Cedar Springs Hospital psychiatric institution in Colorado Springs later that day, although in his own notes he claimed I was not 'agitated,' 'depressed,' or 'in distress.' This assessment was not competent and was gravely in error. Perhaps I should have been sedated with Ativan and Versed if necessary to control the convulsions and connected to EEG in some form of effort to diagnose the seizures, which would not have been difficult or expensive, although this would not have allowed the hospital to bill my insurance for very much money. Two days later, on July 23, 2025, I was transferred to the UC Memorial Health Center ER in Colorado Springs by ambulance from Cedar Springs Hospital and placed under intensive care due to asphyxiation from choking on vomit during tonic clonic seizures. The staff at Cedar Springs claimed I had fallen and hit my head at their facility, which my care team at Memorial Hospital was able to find no evidence of. I was put on a ventilator and a tracheal tube was inserted to clean the vomit out of my lungs. By that point I already had pneumonia. Simply rolling me onto my side may have prevented the issue. Rather, the staff at Cedar Springs only offered stern lectures regarding my 'misbehavior,' which were not helpful. I was only offered food with choking hazards and given lit cigarettes at the facility. I was in and out of the seizures for about three days, completely cut off from any possible access to medical attention, before I lost consciousness. My next memory is of the feeding tube being removed at Memorial Hospital. To quote an MD from the Memorial Hospital case notes on July 23, "The specific organ or organ systems failed or in danger of failing were Cardiovascular, Neurological, and Respiratory." To quote his colleague on July 24, "Patient's condition is life-threatening and without ongoing intervention would deteriorate." A third Physician on July 26 noted, "BH [Behavior Health] evaluated him and he is NOT gravely disabled and does not meet any M1 hold criteria," and, "This pt [patient] has Epilepsy." This was the neurologist who observed the tonic clonic seizures on EEG. I was discharged from Memorial Hospital and sent home later that day. Fortunately I am now nine months seizure-free. Respiratory failure and tonic clonic seizure are known to cause permanent death of brain tissue and irreversible injury to the brain, and may cause sudden-onset death. Would not reccommend.

It took a month to close the finger wound which was not a good outcome of my poor choice. This winter I had a worse but similar insult to the same finger so I did go to the ER and their efficient care of the finger allowed it to heal properly. This time we made the same choice for a smaller ct on a different finger and it has healed extremely well. From the moment I arrived, bloody hand wrapped , I was treated efficiently and politely, from register g window to assessment to treatment. Clerical staff and medical staff are well trained. On 1 visit, I actually needed an MD but the most recent used a PA who did a fine job. The various techs who were used to clean the wounds as well as remove stitches later were also efficient and accurate at task. I am lucky to have this fairly near by, though not as close as when BCH had the facility right in town. Back then it was a much shorter distance for my family, especially when transporting one of my children. But progress requires more and different space and with this facility accessible to a few highways it is better for the greater community that has moved to the suburbs of Boulder. Since I have good insurance and have used this facility in the past. They can process my emergencies quite quickly. There were other patients in line too, some with far greater injuries so appropriate that they were taken even more quickly and were served by the discs. Broken ribs from bicycle incidents have been other cases with priority both times. Such a Boulder situation so be careful out there!

Even the most basic visits--such as routine annual wellness/annual physical exams--are repeatedly billed incorrectly, with improper codes submitted to insurance. This has happened to me two years in a row. Each time, the result has been hundreds of dollars out of pocket and significant time wasted correcting errors that should never have occurred. I raised these issues multiple times directly with my physician and with Audrey, the practice manager. There has been zero response and no attempt to resolve the problem. If this is how the practice handles routine preventive care, I cannot imagine how poorly it would perform if a patient were genuinely ill or required ongoing medical attention. Frankly, socialized medicine in a third world country would be preferable to the dysfunction I've experienced here. I do not recommend Coal Creek Family Medicine.
