If I could give 0 stars or - negative stars I would! Went to see Dr. V for the first time today. What a complete waste of time! The worst bedside manner. Dismissive. No concern or empathy. My total visit with him lasted 10 minutes at best. After 2 prior cervical fusions, my imaging shows severe stenosis on the right, moderate on the left, a herniated disc above my fusion, and 2mm slippage of my vertebrae at flexion and extension. My symptoms include numbness in my right hand, tingling in the back of my neck and the side of my face, and ice pick headaches in the back of my head. His response was "those symptoms don't correlate with that level. Surgery is a 50/50 chance if you'll do better. You can get another ablation or steroid shots. But degeneration is normal as we age." Maybe we can explore this as a cause: Occipital neuralgia: This is a distinct condition that is often triggered by cervical spine issues, including herniated discs. Occipital neuralgia is caused by the irritation or compression of the occipital nerves that run from the upper spine to the scalp. It is characterized by sharp, stabbing, or electric-shock-like pain that can feel very similar to an ice pick headache. Or how about it can absolutely cause the symptoms I have: A herniated disc at the C3-C4 level of the cervical spine can cause various symptoms, including: Pain: Sharp, shooting pain in the neck that may radiate down the arm into the shoulder, hand, or fingers Pain that worsens with certain movements, such as bending the neck forward or backward Numbness and Tingling: Numbness or tingling in the shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers Pins and needles sensation That was it. Off I went with the name of a chiropractor and different pain management doctor. I'm sorry but there's nothing normal about the symptoms I'm feeling. So if it's not from that level, let's figure out where it's coming from and fix it. He was absolutely horrible. I've been dealing with this for 10 years and I've never experienced a doctor who could not care less about helping. Stay away. read more

Personal Statement - Don H. Pearson On June 5, 2025, I had a telehealth appointment with a surgeon, Dr V at Boulder Community Health to review my EMG results and ongoing spine and nerve issues. I had waited 6 long months for this appointment, I had MRIs, CT scans, X-Rays and an EMG preparing for this and came in with the hope of receiving answers and professional guidance. My appointment was never with him it was set up with Dr Beasley and Liz her PA those are the people that I saw when I first came back to Boulder they're the ones who ordered the MRI the CT scan all of that they're the ones who ordered it and I was supposed to meet with Liz and Dr Beasley... Had been waiting months! And when I get into the meeting suddenly I'm told "oh they're not here anymore" both of them which is very strange a Red Flag IMO They didn't even give me the courtesy to tell me that I would be seeing this other surgeon and I have to tell you Dr Beasley and Liz always treated me wonderfully they're always very nice to me very compassionate you know very concerned... And then I get in with this guy and he is just horrible just just horrible... Literally the most arrogant medical professional I have ever been around and I have been around quite a few. Unfortunately, the interaction was deeply disappointing. I found the surgeon's manner dismissive and condescending. He cut me off repeatedly when I attempted to ask questions or clarify concerns, and I was left feeling disrespected, unheard, and invalidated -- especially given the seriousness of the symptoms I've been experiencing and my long history of spinal surgeries and pain. The surgeon made alarming claims that my prior surgeries were improperly performed and even stated that I was "scammed," referring to operations by well-respected providers, including one at Cedars-Sinai. Whether or not there was any surgical complication is a matter for proper medical evaluation -- not for throwing accusations during a brief, one-sided meeting where I wasn't allowed to respond fully. After the surgeon abruptly ended the appointment claiming an emergency, I was visibly upset and hung up after possibly saying "damn it" or something similar, no "F" word not even close! At no point did I curse at the provider or use abusive language toward the staff. The following day, I received a call from a staff member at BCH informing me that they would no longer be treating me, alleging that I had been disruptive and used inappropriate language. I categorically deny this. I believe I was dismissed unfairly because I expressed frustration over how I was treated -- not because I behaved in any threatening or disrespectful manner. While I will not be returning to BCH for further care, I want to have this statement on record to clarify the events from my point of view. I remain committed to finding appropriate medical support and healing, and I hope future providers will treat me with the professionalism and compassion every patient deserves. Regarding notes left in their response: The "Cursing and Hanging Up" Note This is classic CYA language (cover-your-ass). It's designed to discredit your emotional reaction without owning how they provoked it. Reality check: I was told that I was potentially "scammed" by previous surgeons, that my nerve has likely been trapped for years (which explains your suffering), and that permanent damage may have already happened. Then, the surgeon abruptly leaves--without compassion, clarity, or closure. If I muttered something while hanging up? That's human. They claimed I cursed at him because he had an emergency, that's complete baloney, My ex worked in emergency for over 20 years, that's is one thing I get, I did not curse at him period that is a LIE! I did call the front office afterwards and ask was he always this rude, which of course they did not expect, I was being honest he as well as his PA both were very rude to me. The Notes he left after my appointment were manipulative, and frankly, insulting. The "You Might Have Been Scammed" Comment Nowhere in his notes does Dr. V record his inflammatory accusation about my previous surgeries being a "scam." That alone shows his unprofessionalism: he wanted to sound like an insider but wasn't willing to put it in writing. I Was Not Overreacting--I was Dismissed and Gaslit I've been dealing with: Real debilitating pain for years every day all day Confirmed nerve damage A difficult surgical history A vulnerable post-op situation And then I get dumped on by a surgeon who made scary accusations, offered no emotional support, and had the gall to document the fallout as my fault. I can say nothing but great things about Dr. Lee Nelson, his extremely knowledgeable physician's assistants, and his entire team at BNA. I unfortunately have DDD, bad genetics, and have had a long medical career since the age of 16--as a CNA, a medical assistant, and an RN. Many years of lifting/bending, and schlepping. I ended up working in surgery-- which is how I met Dr. Nelson. When the pain came to a head and injections were no longer helping, I knew exactly who to go to. Dr. Nelson is casual but confident, off-the-chart intelligent but down to earth, and easy to talk to. Surgery is not a trivial thing to him, he will make sure a patient has explored all other avenues first. I have undergone two successful fusions by Dr. Nelson, one cervical, and one lumbar. I can honestly say that I could not have received better care anywhere. Fantastic surgeon and PAs and staff! Nobody really wants to have to see a neurosurgeon and spine doctor but when you do need to Dr. V and Eric will treat you with respect, kindness and amazing care! I was in excruciating pain with a massive bulging disc pushing on my nerves, causing bilateral leg pain and they were able to get me in for surgery within weeks and resolve all my pain. I am now three months postop and doing great. I am so appreciative to them for their care and kindness and support throughout this experience. Dr. Nanney & his team are incredible. I had been struggling with low back pain for about 10 years. Finally went to see him for a consultation. Felt he answered absolutely every question I had. He was patient and reassuring. I had already explored every conservative measure out there. I had a L5/S1 fusion. He, Dr. Donohue (general surgeon who assisted), Brian (his PA who also assisted) were all so skillful, professional, and personable. Additionally, I can't say enough about the office staff, particularly, Cynthia, the surgical coordinator, who helped navigate the insurance aspect and with all the scheduling. She was wonderful! I am recovering and doing great. What a lovely practice and team. I highly recommend this bunch! read more

This review is solely based on my experience with Alan Villavicencio, MD, the support staff who assisted, and his preferred surgery center in Lafayette/Louisville area on Hwy 287. When I came to see him I wasabis to walk about a block before pain and 6 blocks before having to sit and rest due to the pain in my back/leg. I had a previous spine surgery to correct spinal stenosis. My visits were all non pressured and succinct. I could tell he had a lot of knowledge and information during our conversations and he and his staff was willing to answer any questions I had. I did not get the impression that he is social or person, but I didn't care, I wanted the best surgeon. What this meant for me is I was prepared with a list of my questions before I came to appointments and asked them all. He is very quick and knowledgeable and I am not the best in the fly with memory, so I believe I would have missed questions had I not done this. I have seen reviews where he lacks bedside manner...I would not say this. I do not think he will stay and hold your hand while coddling you, but he won't be rude. He is very professional. He presented my three options and gave me the pros and cons of each. He explained short and long term scenarios to me. His staff was top notch...in my opinion some of the best staff I've encountered. This applies to the receptionists, nursing staff, assistant doctors, surgery center personnel, and billing person. I was very pleased with how accommodating they were and low pressure the entire experience was for me. Since surgery I have been perfectly happy and no symptoms have returned. After multiple opinions from two orthopedic surgeons, a neurologist, and two non-surgical docs, I felt the short discussion with Dr. Rajpal was unique in his explanation and in line with my expectations. If I had to get stabbed with a knife in my sleep I'd wake up hoping it was Rajpal. L4-5 Microdiscectomy done in minimally invasive fashion. Incision a hair under an 1", and it has been said minimal lamina removal. Vickie in my opinion did an excellent job on the sutures I think the scar will be minimal. Clearly everyone's case will differ, but in my case after surgery I no longer suffered from sciatic nerve pain. I'm at week 4. Still have foot weakness but its said to subside in a few months to a year. Looking forward to full recovery and getting back into my sports. Thank you Team Rajpal. read more

I had 4 level c-spine fusion in 2012 (c3-c7) and was impressed with the competence and warmth of all the staff and docs I met with. Pleased with the outcome, too. However, I have a degenerative spinal problem and have been recommended to have additional fusion (c7-t2) and am quite concerned about this. However, the PA's Mike and Sarah have been great, Dr. Nelson took the time to listen to me. I emailed additional questions Thursday night and was told the staff wouldn't be in on Friday, but I got an email Friday responding to all my questions. Please do not patronize this unethical office. I have atypical face pain, a chronic condition, and received a recommendation to try Dr. V. I called the office and made clear to the receptionist that I had atypical face pain and NOT trigeminal neuralgia. I was not interested in wasting my time and money or the doc's time. She said she'd ask the doc if it was worth a shot. She came back in a couple minutes and said Dr. V thinks there's a 40% chance he can help. I was quite excited, like anyone with chronic pain would be. After setting up the earliest appointment I could, filling out paperwork, and waiting for the doc we finally sat down in Dr. V's patient room. We chatted for three to four minutes, he determined that I have atypical face pain and not trigeminal neuralgia, and said he can't help me. As easy as that. But oh, maybe he knew somebody who could help. Said he'd follow up with this other doc and be back in touch. Disappointed, but still hopeful, I went home. About an hour later I got a call from Boulder Neurological & Spine. This other doc wasn't interested in trying to help me either. Sad. So now I have an invoice from BN&S. Originally for $476(!) but reduced by my health insurance to $143. Insult to injury. I explained how I was railroaded to the office of Dr. V, but he just wants the dough. Bad peeps. read more

I was very pleased with all aspects of my surgical experience with Dr. Nelson. He carefully explained my diagnosis and what surgery would entail and patiently answered questions. A spinal fusion is not what a senior citizen wants to go through, but he eased my fears and I was back playing golf within six months. He and his entire staff were extremely helpful and I never waited more than a few minutes whenever I went in. I was so happy my GP referred me to him and I highly recommend him. read more

Pre operatively, I was in constant pain in my legs and low back, and was very limited in normal daily activities, and duties around the house and yard. I had a 3-level lumbar spinal fusion on July 12, 2018 by Dr. Rajpal. I anticipated much more pain and post op incapacity than I actually experienced. I was very pleasantly surprised. I did go to rehab for a week post hospitalization and began very mild exercise and therapy which was one of the keys to my success, in my opinion. I have been very faithful doing ALL my therapy - particularly leg and core strengthening , along with using the bone growth stimulator as prescribed daily. I no longer have any leg pain, no difficulty sitting for as long as needed, and other than a little stiffness in my low back - which I expected, I feel so much better. I am able to do more of my usual activities at the 3 month mark. I feel that Dr. Rajpal and his staff have been excellent to work with, always answering questions, and keeping me on track in my recovery. He and Vicki were very encouraging to me from the first visit and continue to be so. I would certainly recommend them to anyone considering a similar procedure. read more

Let me start out by saying I am a huge fan of this entire practice! Dr Beasley is a brilliant surgeon and person, she is kind, caring, genuine, thoughtful and just an amazing soul who knows her stuff! I am incredibly grateful for she and her PA Christie Zakar and their entire team there at Boulder Neurosurgical. This practice is and has tremendous heart and they truly care about giving individuals there lives back. They all take their time to listen to you and give you the information you need to make a decision. I came to Dr Beasley in some of the worse pain I had ever experience in my life after a follow up appt from a previous pain management place that adjusted me into pain I could have never imagined would literally cripple me for months. I have always been very active. After having tried every alternative method to gain relief for months prior to choosing surgery to no avail; I sought Dr Beasley's guidance and I finally accepted that if I wanted my active life back; I needed to put my back and my trust with Dr Beasley to rid myself of the constant debilitating pain that was rendering me unable to walk. And I am so deeply incredibly grateful I made that choice. She took the time to explain to me everything I needed to make my decision. They supported me each step along the way. Christie was awesome every time I called in emotional or afraid she answered my questions and put my mind at ease. I have followed my Dr's order to the letter and as soon as I came out of recovery I have been walking without pain. Obviously there is some residual nerve stuff because I waited so long to have the surgery but I get stronger each day and that subsides each day and am so thankful to be walking again WITHOUT ANY PAIN. And following the restrictions so that I have a complete and full recovery. I couldn't agree more with the previous review. This office has the worst, most incompetent medical staff I've ever encountered. I went in to see Dr. Mason. He seemed reasonably friendly, but was more concerned with teaching his resident doctor in training than giving me attention and care. He requested a cat scan. I then spent over an hour waiting for the receptionist to stop flirting with the coffee delivery guy and focus long enough to actually order it. Meanwhile I was the one who had to stand there making phone calls to find a facility that had the right equipment and took my insurance, which I did. I gave her all the info and she said they would call it in and get approval within a week and confirm back to me. 3 WEEKS went by without a single word. When I called back to check, they took my name saying they'd call me back, then never did. When I called again, they said I wasn't in their system and they had no record of my visit! When I insisted I had, and explained the details again, she said, laughing, "Well, Dr. Mason's been a bad boy and hasn't kept up on his paperwork." (Even though she was the one who entered me into their system!) I said, "Excuse me, but I don't find the matter funny. This is a serious neurological issue and your handling of it is bordering on negligent incompetence." She didn't apologize. Even worse, she told me AGAIN she would call me back and NEVER DID. It took no less than 6 calls and being handed off to 3 different people to get someone to act, and when they told me it was all set up and approval had been faxed to my facility, it turned out they STILL HAD NOT DONE IT. It took two more calls. I left two message for the office manager, explaining the situation, asking for her to address the total failure of her office, and neither was returned. Then, after I had my scan results sent back to BNA, and called to schedule a follow up, they couldn't find the cd. They told me they'd call back. Guess what? They NEVER DID. I couldn't be more disgusted, or feel less respected or cared for, than I did with these CLOWNS. Finally went with another doctor and another office. Figured I would let BNA know one last time, in case someone there wanted to address it. Found an email on their web site and sent an email. Guess what? Their general contact email is "configured to reject email from anonymous users"! If it wasn't such a tragically horrible FAIL, it would be hilarious. Please do not go here! My boyfriend had a horrible experience. My boyfriend was referred here from his doctor after getting an MRI. So my boyfriend had to take off work (keep in mind he doesn't make the kind of money a surgeon makes ) again . My boyfriend had printed and filled out his paperwork prior to his appointment and when he got to his appointment on time they told him the doctor was in surgery with another patient !! Three hours later they finally saw my boyfriend only to tell him what he dreaded. My boyfriend has a list of so many back problems he's had these problems for over a decade now. He's had injections before and two back surgeries as well. But Doctor Beasley wanted to recommend him get injections. She was trying to tell him "we want to try everything we can before surgery..." She's just another doctor that doesn't care and wants to waste people's time and money! I made sure my boyfriend told them of his frustrations. Two spine surgeries in 4 months was not what I had in mind for 2019. Then again, who does? Dr. Rajpal and his entire team were incredible from the first appointment thru the final appointment. First, Dr. Rajpal was very detailed in his evaluation of my situation. We talked first and then he reviewed my images. This made me feel like a "person" and not a set of x-rays and MRIs. He gave a clear recommendation and explained why he thought this was the best course of treatment. I appreciated his evaluation of not just what my case looked like at this time, but he talked about the longer-term possibilities. Before my bike crash, I was a very active cyclist riding ~6500 miles per year. The entire team felt committed to helping me eliminate pain and regain my active lifestyle. I went into my ACDF surgery at C5-C6 with a paralyzed vocal cord (thought to be idiopathic). My voice and breathing were both impacted. When I woke up after surgery, my voice was back! While there were immediate signs of improvement, the pain reduction was slow as the nerve needed time to heal. Dr. Rajpal and his team were extremely patient with my litany of questions and they provided me with a lot of reassurance: nerves take time. One month after my ACDF surgery, an old injury at L5-S1 felt the need to speak up. Within in a month, I was unable to walk or stand without sciatica pain. At my 3 month follow up for my cervical spine, we were reviewing x-rays and MRI results for my lumbar spine. I was devastated. I could wait it out (did this in 2012 and it took years) or I could have a microdiscectomy. Dr. Rajpal and his team were once again extremely patient in answering my questions. So, I proceeded and had my second surgery four months after the first one. I am now one year post ACDF and 8 months post microdiscectomy. I'm hiking 20 miles a week (longest hike has been 13 miles). I'm back on my bikes (road, gravel and mountain). I'm riding the kind of rides I enjoy -- steep climbs in beautiful places (Gold Hill, Logan Mill, Ward, Sunshine Canyon, Switzerland Trail, Super Flagstaff, and more to come). While the nerves are still healing, I am free of pain. It has given me back my active lifestyle. Life without pain has given me my ability to concentrate again and to enjoy reading, sewing, metalsmithing, baking, and socializing. Honestly, I can't find the words to completely express both my gratitude to Dr. Rajpal and his team and my 100% recommendation for anyone in need in a neurosurgeon and his team. Went in for dibilitating pain in my shoulders, neck, chest, and back of head. Was referred to this specialist by my GP & it was completely pointless. Dr. Baur spent 5 minutes with me & decided I had carpal tunnel. Tried to explain I didn't have carpal tunnel (I have neuropathy in my arms/hands from a car wreck 4yrs ago) and how that has nothing to do with the pain I was referred to him for, but he couldn't be bothered with me. I was supposed to get PT & an MRI through them and still haven't heard anything a month later. Definitely wouldn't trust getting surgery here. read more

Unprofessional is the first thing I think of. I had a spinal surgery that had complications that left me permanently disabled. The doctor called it a relatively common condition called Parsonage -Turner Syndrome. No doctor since has ever heard of it and that goes for OT's and PT's. No one has heard of it. The doctor wouldn't see me afterwards, she would have her PA talk to me. Once the PA told me the doctor was in surgery but when walking out a doctors office door opened and when she saw me glaring at her she went red as a tomatoes. I'm 47 and wheelchair bound now, (was walking when I first saw Dr. Beasley), its too late for me, but save yourself and find another doctors office. read more

The doctors may be good but they do not care about people or time. This has somehow become an elitest practice, my appointment with the PA not even the doctor (because why would they want to see you first for your consult) was at 9am, I arrived 13 minutes early and by 9:31 had still not seen anyone, did I mention I was the only patient in the waiting room. I've seen 3 of the physicians over the years and bedside manners were lost here too, only RajPaul even acts like he cares the others make you feel like you were lucky to be seen by them. read more

I had surgery with BNA. The surgeon, and even the PAs were fine; surgery was successful (at least so far). However, I was unhappy with the billing aspects of the surgery. Supposedly (at least at the time), BNA and the hospital should have been in network. However, after the fact I found out that 1) they used a monitoring service that isn't in network with anyone, and 2) when their PAs assist, the PAs are not in network. I think I'm in the clear now for the monitoring service bill, However,the bill for the PA was more than for the surgeon, and being out of network, I am technically responsible for the whole (multi thousand dollar) bill (less than $200 the insurance allows for a surgical assistant) I am a year out of surgery, and still dealing with this bill. The latest is I got a statement stating I should pay $500; there is no indication that this will settle the bill, and when I have tried calling the person listed for questions, she is never there. Bottom line, my out of pocket for the PA assisting the surgeon is more than my out of pocket for the surgeon, anesthesia, and the hospital fees (i have good insurance, and they covered pretty much everything that was in network). If someone has told me ahead of time that this would be the case, I would have found another surgeon. I have no problem with the surgeon and the individuals at the office I've dealt with have been fine, but think the way my surgery was billed borders on unethical; and question whether the pre-authorization folks are doing things properly. They have now stopped taking my insurance, so I'll need to find another spine specialist. However, when I asked for a recommendation (when the receptionist called to tell me their office was not in my insurance's network, so I'd have to pay for my final followup appt), they would make no recommendations. As one of the previous reviewers stated, the surgeons are amazing. However, before someone commits to surgery at this practice, ask a lot of questions about how much it will cost, and confirm that everyone involved with the surgery is in network with your insurance. read more

I'm a 66 y.o. woman who had L4/5 spinal fusion surgery by Dr. Villavicencio at Boulder Neurosurgical & Spine Assoc. in August 2016. I'd been dealing with increasing pain in lower right back for the past year when I first came to see him. I'd tried pills, injections, PT, increasing activity, decreasing activity, massage, hot baths etc. and nothing was working. I got to the point where I could only do about 20% of what I used to be able to do and decided I finally had to let go of my "No one's EVER going to turn me face down on a surgical table and operate on my spine!!!" feeling and accept reality. After LOTS of research I decided to see Dr. V. at BSNA. I realize that for a variety of reasons, everyone's experience with back surgery is different but, for me, it was life changing-in a wonderful way. Dr. V is a highly skilled surgeon and he and his assistants Eric & Alex make an excellent team. Also, being able to communicate w/them through patient portal made questions & answers when needed was much easier. Now, at 6 month post op, I have some slight discomfort in lower back due to age related osteoarthritis in SI joints. Outside of that, am virtually pain free. I found Dr. V, Eric, Alex and the entire BSNA team that I worked with-including front desk staff, appt. schedulers, people who helped me w/insurance issues, etc.-to be outstanding and I'm so glad I chose Dr. V. to do my surgery.
