I am not a climber myself, but my son brought his climbing shoes. My daughter rented shoes and they spent three hours in this gynormous location! If you are in town (Minneapolis, MN) & you love rock wall climbing ("bouldering)...this is definitely worth a stop! This venue displays some on the most colorful and varying degrees of difficulty...in fact during our visit, there was a beginner's class about to get started! This place is soooooo huge. Towards the back there was even a center for little kids with their own climbing wall and a slide. On the opposite end, there was a gym with weightlifting equipment! Upstairs there was a lounging area complete with couches, chairs/tables, small library of books and board games. It looks like they even host yoga classes from time to time. This is a great climbing and strength gym located on the outskirts of Downtown Minneapolis. I am particularly impressed with their kid's section; I have been a member of other climbing gyms, and none had an awesome kid-specific areas like this gym does. Our four-year-old absolutely LOVES coming here to climb, and the cool shapes, the tunnel, and the slide all make it a great experience for her. On the other side of the gym, I am super impressed with their fitness section. They have everything a powerlifter or olympic lifter could want, including racks, bumper plates, and even a GHD. My only minor complaint is they do not offer a true family membership; for my family of four to join, the cost would be almost $100 more per month than the gym we used in California. Brought the kids here to start off their spring break and glad I did. Loved the youth area which is equipped especially for kids with appropriate bouldering and a slide. The kids had so much fun. We have been going to this gym for years! Me 3+ years and my husband 8...or when it first opened. This is the first place where I learned bouldering and has become my favorite sport of all time. The coloring system indicating different levels (typically VB through V 17) makes it easier for people to learn and not as intimidating. There are different sections in the gym, such as slab, overhang, top out islands so everyone can find their style. Every once in a while, they will have competition routes for people to try and have fun on them. Although the gym is a great option, we often prefer outdoor climbing bouldering and top rope. We think that the bouldering holds are not super realistic to outdoors but more a fun recreational activity- which is still bouldering but if you are training for outdoors I personally would go somewhere else for training. Throughout the year, the bouldering project host, different events, such as the biggest event of the year Boulder Fest. There are activities packs through all weekend, long and competition where you can go and watch. It has been fun to cheer on our local climbers. Besides the bouldering part. There are yoga studios and a full gym available as well as locker rooms, showers and saunas. Once you are a member, you can go to any of the classes offered as many times as you want my personal favorites are Pilates, yoga, and circuit training. Over the years my husband and I have used their sauna very very well. They do provide towels, though they had to pause during Covid but now towels are back. My only complaint about the sauna is that it doesn't get very hot and you cannot pour water on it to create steam. It's what got me through some colder months here in Minneapolis, so I am beyond thankful for it!! read more

I wish I visited this bouldering gym sooner! It reminds me of my home gym in California, and I totally felt at home here. I enjoyed all the different types of problems I could work on, which had a very nice range. It's definitely a gym that is suitable for climbers at any level. They use a color grading system, which was new to me, but easy to understand. The staff and community there are also super nice. AND..They had a nice top out section (yay!). If you're coming from work, they also have really nice sized lockers that are big enough to store backpacks, coats, and shoes. I will be back soon to purchase a pass! read more

After paying your admission fee and completing a waiver, you are given climbing shoes and access to free lockers for personal items. I bouldered twice before in another gym; therefore, my review of the Minneapolis Bouldering Project is in comparison to my previous experience. I would give this place 4.5 stars, but my rating shows 5 because we can't give .5 ratings. My overall experience was fantastic and I wanted to compliment one of their employees. However, there are two feedbacks that could be potentially improve upon: 1) The initial smell was unpleasant upon entering the bouldering gym, it smelled like dirty feet in old locker rooms, but it becomes less noticeable as you equilibrate to the smell of the environment. 2) The air ventilation could be improved because the chalk dust remained in the air of the gym and could be seen in the air. The staff at this gym are super friendly. Kaitlyn (might have spelled her name wrong) took the time to explain the safety rules, gave my group of friends a short tour, provided recommendation on which climbing hold to start on, and allowed my group borrowed her chalk bag for free! She was extremely kind and even came to check up on my group to see how we were doing and asked if we had questions. This gym is different from other bouldering gyms because the level of difficulty is not numbered but is represented by colors, this helped me in being more open to trying different climbing holds. I have now used the bouldering and I'm attempting to use this to help me deal with my fear of heights, so far it's not going as well on that front. On the other upsides of this location it's got a gym, great classes and a very open seating area to use if your are taking a break. It was my first time bouldering, but this isn't the first time i've been on my back, embarrassed, and black&blue. Boy... YIKES! The pain was so worth it and i'm not even self sadistic. HURT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME! I joke way too much. This is a spectacular spot to pick up your next hobby, climb away! The staff is beyond fantastic and friendly, I felt cared for. They are thorough and succinct with their policy, you'll be climbing in no time if it's your first time. If there wasn't a pandemic, I feel like this gym would be my second home. They have an amazing variety of routes. There are plenty of routes for each level, and the routes are pretty diverse too. What I love the most is that even if you are climbing at a lower level, they incorporate routes that require special moves, as opposed to your basic up-down routes with nice grips. It allows you to practice more techniques as you ease in (or back in) to climbing. I haven't really experienced this at any other bouldering gym! Unfortunately, we do have a pandemic, and their safety protocols are super performative/non-existant. You reserve a 2 hour slot online, and the options are in 30 minute intervals. Each slot has 25 spots. That means, at any given time (2 hours after opening) there can be ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE in the gym. When we were there, I counted about 60, and it was still impossible to social distance. On top of that, they "encourage" you to clean and sanitize your hands when entering and during climbing, but all of their santizer pumps are empty. As we were leaving, we saw multiple groups of 4+ people entering the gym, and there was a huge line to check-in/check-out. We noted that it was more crowded than it was when we climbed pre-pandemic. Also, the vibe here is super elitist. There is no climbing etiquette whatsoever-- I had folks overlapping me in the middle of a climb I had already stared (forget social distancing, this is just basic climbing etiquette). Glad there are other climbing gyms in the area, but sucks that the one with the best routes is a super-spreader of MPLS. read more

I had never been bouldering before and I loved it here! Was invited by a friend and my wife and I decided to be adventurous and it for sure paid off. The first time you go they won't make you pay for shoes which is super nice, but after that you will have to pay about $4 to rent shoes. It's a bit pricey, but honestly kind of worth it, they also have a gym where you can lift and a yoga class and both are free to members! While waiting for the paramedics, MBP staff literally said, "I'm sure you just pulled muscles in your lower back. I hope this fall doesn't prevent you from climbing with us in the future." Best climbing gym in Minnesota hands down! Such a great place to bring people who have never climbed (they will feel welcomed and not out of place) and a favorite place for experienced climbers. Routes are changed up very often (multiple times per week). To add on top of the amazing and large climbing area, they have a weight training room, yoga studio, men's and women's locker rooms with saunas in each, as well as provides towels. They also have a kid friendly area for young ones and have a "parents night out" once a month, where pizza and a movie is provided along with care, while you can enjoy a night out. My family came here for a Saturday afternoon. We had a blast! None of us had ever bouldered before. The staff gave us a quick run-down of how it all worked and how to stay safe and have fun. They gave us shoes to wear which help your feet grip the rocks better than your ordinary sneakers would. I would recommend casual clothing; you don't need extreme athletic gear or anything. The cost is reasonable for a fun family day. Furthermore, I was not expecting the other amenities included with your day pass. There's a small gym in the back with exercise machines. A lounge upstairs where you can sit and watch Netflix even. Showers and a sauna as well. There are also tons of cubbies to stick your shoes and jacket in, as well as lockers in the locker rooms/bathrooms. You would just have to bring your own lock. My last thing is to remind you that the five of us had zero experience whatsoever. We aren't super fit either. Only my brother has respectable muscle mass! So it was a lot of falling on our a**es and not being able to get more than a few feet up the wall. But it was still an awesome experience!!!! So much fun! Wasn't expecting them to let me vape inside but they were honestly super chill about it. Apparently it helps you focus more when you climb. Climbing chalk can sometimes be expensive, so sometimes they'll hook it up with flour, and it pretty much works the same. They still need a hot tub though. 5 stars. read more

There were so many options for bouldering, I was glad I had a friend with me who knew all about what to do and tips - I think I might have been confused otherwise, since it was my first time. Love our experience at Minneapolis Bouldering Project. We visited with a group of 4 first timers, and 2 veterans and had an awesome time. The staff was extremely helpful getting us checked in, paid up and getting us fitted for climbing shoes. Because we had first timers in our group - one of the staff members gave us a tour of the facility - which is expansive. The facility has a large bouldering area, locker rooms, cafe/work space, yoga studio, fitness class area, a standard gym and facilities for kids. The staff member then gave us some quick safety tips & guidelines and helped us understand the color system that outlines the various difficulty levels. The facility is great for adults of all ages & kids. They have ample parking and nice long hours. A standard day pass is $16 + shoe rental (if you need them) but if you have a group of 5+ and can plan a few days out there is a group rate of $12/person - which includes shoe rental. The group rate also has an option to add on a instructor/facilitator for $20 but you do need 2 weeks notice! Be prepared to get a good workout in + experience some wear and tear on your hands. Highly recommend + Pryes Brewery is right next door to grab a beer and some food afterwords! read more

Most rock climbing gyms have a small section for bouldering. MBP is the opposite! Big boulder walls everywhere. Yes, it is bouldering only. However, I do suggest everyone give it a try. I prefer top rope/lead climbing but I think MBP makes up it up with other things. So many walls. Many different routes. You can climb for hours. There's beginner friendly routes and plenty of advanced material. The ground padding is soft. The wall does feel like rough sandpaper. I would not recommend wearing your fanciest Lululemon outfit here. I got plenty of scraps on my knees and elbows. Otherwise, the wall has great grip. I've had the chance to try their yoga and conditioning classes. The facilities are very nice and of course everything is brand new. I would recommend the classes for anyone interested. It makes the gym pass worthwhile. A bonus is that there's a towel service. read more

Everyone here is so friendly, they make it easy to jump in and start climbing. The employees will make sure you are comfortable and ready to go and it's easy to start to make a community of people to climb with. The yoga classes are also great, the instructors will challenge you to do your best but they'll also make it an option to modify the exercises so that everyone can participate. The first time in, MBP almost immediately became one of my favorite things to do in the area. It's a great physical and mental challenge that anyone in reasonable shape can enjoy. Even if you fail miserably on a route, you're still having fun and then you just move to a different or easier route to grab that feeling of victory. They change up the layout regularly, so there's always something new to try and to push yourself with. There are 2 popular locations for indoor bouldering. This one and Twin Cities Vertical Endeavors location. If I had money to get a monthly membership, I'd choose this facility over VE. Both have great routes but this facility has an almost spa vibe to it. It has a comprehensive workout room with weights + treadmill.
