Boutique Travel I just returned from another incredible, once in a lifetime trip made possible by Ellen Clark at Boutique Travel in Oakland, California. This trip was a 30 day trip to Africa. I landed in Zanzibar and was greeted on the tarmac by my fabulous tour operator. She and her entourage drove me by private vehicle to emigration, handled customs, and presto chango led me to my private Land Cruser. I arrived late, about 2:30 am, to my room with a full view of the Indian Ocean. Ellen had arranged for The Hotel Serena to offer me food and drink. It is difficult to summarize my incredible private trip through Tanzania and Uganda over the next month. Every detail was handled. I did not have to think about anything. The private car was always there and waiting (the cars were always appropriate - mostly Toyota Land Cruisers, some Land Rovers, and an occasional Range Rover). The professional drivers and tour guides amazing. I saw all manner of wild animals including chimpanzees and the great migration of Wildebeast across the Mara River between Kenya and Tanzania. And the private guided trip went on. I saw the mountain gorillas in Uganda. I enjoy working with Ellen because she tries to make my individual experience exactly what I want. She has visited many of the 5 star properties and assesses them according to the client's specific tastes. Ellen is readily accessible during the trip. You just text her from wherever you are (Africa, India, Australia, Belize, Ecuador) and tell her what you want. She makes it happen. This is not the place to go for budget travel. This is where I go for 5 star experiences around the world.

They put together a 12-day tour of Morocco for me and three friends. It was amazing and exceeded all expectations. We paid extra for a full time English speaking guide which made the trip. With the driver we made six. It was the perfect size group. And Morocco is an exceptional place filled with lovely people. I thought this would be a once in a lifetime trip but I decided I'm coming back.

My husband and I decided to go to Tahiti for our honeymoon. I am a seasoned traveler and attempted to plan this on my own. NOT a good idea if you've never been there. Then I found Boutique Travel via Yelp and Tahiti Tourism. Lifesaver. Michelle was my first contact because Ellen was out of town. Even though she is based in South Africa, she responded quickly and looked into flights and different hotel options within a matter of a few days. I really appreciated her taking the time to make sure we got all the information we needed to make a decision since it was going to be a big trip and quite a splurge. Once Ellen got back, she quickly introduced herself and picked up where Michelle left off. She made sure I got all my payments in on time and provided us with all the documentation we needed for our trip along with additional tips and advice. About a week or two prior to our trip, Ellen checked-in to make sure we had all of our questions answered and provided us with emergency contact numbers so we could get help from her and vendors in Tahiti, if anything were to go wrong. We didn't need to use any of those numbers as everything went really smoothly! The hotels we stayed at were amazing and so luxurious! We opted for the Intercontinental Moorea (garden bungalow with private pool) and Le Moana in Bora Bora (overwater horizon bungalow). The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating at both locations. All of the transports and transfers to/from the hotels to the airports worked out smoothly and in a timely manner. Overall, we had a trip of a lifetime and we really appreciate Boutique Travel for putting it all together for us so we could really relax and have a great time! This was my first time going with a travel agent, but I'm sure it won't be my last now that I know Ellen's around!

My girlfriend and I went on an awesome vacation to Africa organized by Boutique Travel. Everything went super smoothly and we had the time of our lives. We saw way more wildlife than we imagined and stayed in some lodges that we will never forget. I would recommend them highly for specialty vacation planning.

We went to Italy, and she fashioned a beautiful itinerary for us based on things we wanted to do and based on things we didn't even know we could do that she recommended. Most extraordinarily, we wanted to go to a soccer game for our 15-year-old, but tickets didn't go on sale until about two weeks ahead of the game. She must have followed up 6 times to assure us she was checking on the tickets and that she'd get them when they came available. Her app was incredible during the entire travel experience. Every single person on the Italian side--from drivers, to handlers, to tour guides--was incredible. We wanted an epic trip to Italy, and there's no way we could have planned this ourselves. I can't recommend Daria enough! I'd give ten stars if I could.

Thailand has been on our "bucket list" and being invited to a Thai wedding provided the incentive to make Thailand our next international destination. From the moment we contacted Irene, we knew were would be in good hands (was there any doubt?)! After providing responses to Irene's questionnaire regarding our interests and desires about Thailand (along with several emails, text messages, and phone conversations), she provided an excellent itinerary that included flights, private tours, private drivers to and from airports, superb accommodations, and expert guides. During our 5 nights in Bangkok, Irene curated a centrally located hotel in Bangkok, an informal food tour in Chinatown, and an exceptionally knowledgeable local guide to introduce us to the some of the most historically important temples in Bangkok and Ayutthaya. During our first 4 nights in Chiang Mai, Irene curated a modern-styled hotel minutes away from the legendary Night Market (a must experience). We had the pleasure of touring Chiang Mai and the hills of Doi Inthanon National Park with an experienced and friendly local guide. There is no substitute to having a local guide to provide insights and knowledge about Thai culture, food, and history. Additionally, Irene had arranged a private cooking class where we prepared 7 Northern Thailand dishes, all delicious!! Our last 3 nights were spent at the Onsen at Moncham, a Japanese-themed retreat in the mountains before returning home. Although Irene provided many options for our destinations/events and hotels, our itinerary was completely customizable and ultimately, our choice. Working with an agenda combining golf, architectural touring, fine dining, the arts, and the beachfront, each stop allowing time for shopping and people-watching. Guides with locally based expertise tailored each expedition according to our interests and moods, from a unique vista overlooking San Sebastian to a just-off-the-boat lunch of turbot and sashimi-grade tuna. Our guide for Biarritz presented us with 120 photos highlighting our day of exploration. At the Dali Museum in Figueres, where the artwork is presented with little explanation, our guide provided deep background context, significantly elevating my appreciation of the artist. Irene secured prime time reservations at 3 Michelin starred restaurants including Besta in Barcelona which was the favorite among our group of 4. For lighter specialty fare, we enjoyed pintxos and vermouth in outdoor cafes in Bilbao and San Sebastian, and tapas in Barcelona and Girona. Our stay at The Artist Hotel in Bilbao overlooked the Guggenheim Museum and the river, where a lavish breakfast was served in an open-air setting on the top floor. The hotel featured artistic appointments echoing the style of Gehry and other mid-century masters. Each of the five golf courses combined challenging layouts with views of the surrounding hills and neighboring cities. Highlights included Real Sociedad de Golf de Neguri, aptly called "The Torrey Pines of Bilbao" and Real Club de Golf El Prat in Barcelona, where the huge, sculpted greens provided welcome relief from a profusion of sand traps. The highlight of the trip for me was a Flamenco performance by well-known stars of the craft (and an exceptionally gifted guitar player) at Casa Sors, with a cozy night-club setting inside a guitar museum. Irene provided us with a detailed (and colorful) itinerary, creative suggestions, expert planning, and direct communication throughout the trip which once again added to our confidence at just the right moments!

We decided to jump on it, but had no idea where to go. Denise spent hours with me on the phone figuring out what we liked, and helping us center a trip around snorkeling (a first for me - I came from New England before living in SF - that I've always wanted to do). She found us a super swanky all inclusive room and finagled us special decoration and welcome packages for honeymooners, all within our budget and on a tiny timeframe. Then a few days later right before I was going to pay, I called her up at 9pm on a Sunday (please don't be rude to her like me!) worried that the hotel wasn't quite right for us - we were going to Mexico and it felt a little too 'professional' for us, plus I was wondering if there was a way I could just walk right out and snorkel each day. Denise spent hours more with me that night helping me find the perfect spot and plans all over again, with no complaint whatsoever - she actually seemed excited! She really seems to love her job and genuinely enjoys learning about you as a person and matching you to the right trip. Then she even met me in the city where was convenient for me to take payment. We ended up at Club Med, which I had never thought of, which had snorkeling right off the resort - and walked out and snorkeled almost every day of our trip. We also went to Xel-Ha, for another day of fish-watching. There were other options and tours that we'd gone over, but the resort was so good that once we were there we just found ourselves having a wonderful relaxing time with little distraction. This was our first experience using a travel agent and honestly, we initially started down this path out of pure exhaustion... Having worked as a producer for Discovery Travel Media for years, I was one of those people who always felt I "had to do it on my own". Even if I REEEAAALLLYYY didn't want to... Like when I planned a two-week trip for 10 people to six stops in Sicily for my mother's 60th birthday. **SIGH** But things are different now, dammit. SuperHubs and I have SUPER stressful jobs in tech. Life sucks. The world might be ending soon. We spent most of 2017 gasping for air, trying to stay afloat at work and in life. Worrying about deadlines, the economy, nuclear war... WHO HAS TIME TO GET ON TRIPADVISOR AND RESEARCH HOTEL REVIEWS? Good god, save us from all these trivial choices so we can concentrate on building our bomb shelter! Around August, I decided we HAD to get away (if we survived 2017). But there was simply NO WAY we could possibly plan the kind of vacation we needed on our own. And so I set out in search of the mythical "travel agent" to help us... And that's how I found Stacy and Edge of Wonder. Everything people have written about her and EoW here is true. She planned us the PERFECT vacation and I didn't. have. to do. ANYTHING. No joke! It was exactly what we wanted. She was communicative in putting it all together, super organized with all our documentation, friendly and patient (even when I freaked out at the last minute over rain in the forecast - almost making me believe she could ACTUALLY make the weather better for us if need be). The itinerary and the service she arranged for us was top notch, from the moment we landed in Thailand until we stepped on the plane home. We loved our hotels, our guides, not a single hiccup in transportation... It was all seamless and totally us. Even the little bit of rain that finally did arrive was timed just right - at this point, I'm SURE that was her doing. While I was floating in the Andaman Sea on our last day, totally truly chillaxed, I closed my eyes and tried to send her a virtual hug. I hope she got it. So if you're wondering if travel agents still exist in the Age of Expedia and what the hell they do... This - they do this: They let you ACTUALLY RELAX WHEN YOU GO ON VACATION. She sent this email to me today: "I don't do this for the money, but for the people and relationships and the joy I get out of sending clients out to collect memories they hold for the rest of their lives.
