    Michelle M.

In my head as I looked through the menu again was lobster, a whole lobster. I wanted the Chateaubriand with Whole Lobster, to share... naturally. Best of both worlds. That's when lobster-gate occurred... Bo'Vine had no lobsters left, they all sold out the night before. Unfortunately, when handed the menus, we weren't informed that there were no lobsters left, which is the norm. My birthday cravings were dashed. After silent cries inside, we settled for the Chateaubriand (Medium) with Triple Cooked Chips, Rocket & Parmesan Salad and Fiery Peppercorn Sauce on the side for our Main Course. For Starters, I ordered the West Coast Scallop, Smoked Ayrshire Pork Belly, Pumpkin Puree & Pickled Walnuts. My mom ordered, Stornoway Black Pudding, Poached Hens Egg, Pancetta & Red Wine Jus. My scallops were cooked perfectly. Just the way I like them. My starter tasted amazing. The Scallops with the Pork Belly and Pumpkin Puree worked so well together. I could have eaten it all over again. If I had to find a fault with it, I'd say I wasn't keen on the Picked Walnuts, but that's just because I don't actually like walnuts unless they are surrounded by chocolate. My mom's starter could be passed off as a fancy Scottish Breakfast without the Square Sausage, tasting so much better, I might add. The Stornoway Black Pudding was moist and full of flavour, a perfect soft poached egg on top ready for the yolk to be burst all over the plate and a piece of crispy pancetta to complement it all. Perfectly cooked Chateaubriand served in a giant frying pan, complete with a mountain of Triple Cooked Chips, Rocket & Parmesan Side Salads and a little pot of Fiery Peppercorn Sauce on the side. The thing I love about Chateaubriand is the cut of meat is so tender, full of flavour & of good quality. Not to mention, the fact you can build up your own plate full of food; as little or as much as you like. The meat was so tender while cutting it, just the right amount of pink & tasted great. I couldn't fault the meat one bit. It was a great cut, full of flavour, seasoned to perfection & melted in my mouth. The Triple Cooked Chips were unbelievable. So crispy on the outside, light & fluffy inside. I so need to try making them at home now. They are worth it! I'm a huge fan of Rocket & Parmesan Salad, so simple but so tasty. The only downside was, the Salad was rather salty. I'm not sure if it was seasoned with salt or another dressing but the taste of salt was evident. I'm not a huge fan of salty foods so the Salad wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. My mom however, said that the salad wasn't that salty. This goes to show that everyone's taste buds are different! Needless to say, I stuffed my face before starting to feel like I was going to explode. After a good break, I found the strength to want to order dessert. Only problem was, I couldn't choose. Luckily for me, I didn't have to. I ordered them all. Oh yes. I ordered the Bo'Vine Grand Dessert for Two which consisted of: Chocolate & Chestnut Brownie, White Chocolate & Caramel Bavoise, Vanilla Pod Crème Brûlée with a Walnut Biscotti, Iced Popcorn Parfait with a Salted Caramel Foam, Plum Crumble, Cherry Oil Cake & a Chocolate Ice Cream Sundae with Profiteroles. All I can say is WOW! My favourites were the White Chocolate & Caramel Bavoise, Vanilla Pod Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Ice Cream Sundae with Profiteroles. I had no complaints about those 3. I could have eaten them again and again. The others? I wasn't such a great fan of unfortunately. I found the Brownie rather dry, it needed a cream with it to give some moisture. The Iced Popcorn Parfait with a Salted Caramel Foam was far too sickly sweet. I could only have one spoonful of it before having to move on to the next dessert. The plum crumble was far too sweet for my liking as well, my mom devoured it though. I was now at the stage where I could hardly move & couldn't face eating anything else so I didn't try the Cherry Oil Cake. I left it for my mom to try, which she said was extremely nice. I just couldn't eat anymore. Would I go back to Bo'Vine? Yes. I'd have the exact same Starter & Main Course. Dessert? If I had any room left I'd choose the White Chocolate & Caramel Bavoise. I would recommend you try Bo'Vine if you've never been before, Chateaubriand a must.

It's pretty much a given these days that if you want to eat steak at a restaurant, it's probably going to cost you. Not at Bo'Vine it's not! I know what you're thinking - if it's cheap, surely it's not very good quality? Wrong again. Bo'Vine specialises in steak and boasts some of the finest meats and wines in Glasgow. Well, I decided to go and sample their new menu and it is safe to say I wasn't disappointed. Their new offer was two courses plus a bottle of house wine for £40 - for two people. In my book, that's a pretty good deal. Any additional courses cost £4 each and there is no uplift or supplement for ordering the steak - one of my personal pet hates on set menus. If you're not interested in the wine, don't worry, they offer the same set menu without the wine which costs £14.50 for two courses or £17.95 for three! For starter I chose Stornaway Black Pudding, Poached Egg, Pancetta, and Red Wine Jus. Fancy, right? It's quite a small portion and I was sharing it, which I probably wouldn't advise because of its size, but knowing I was planning on a dessert meant it was the perfect amount for two. The red wine jus was so full of flavour, the pancetta was super crispy and the black pudding fell apart beautifully but still had a bit of that crunchy exterior. The egg in my opinion didn't add very much but perhaps stopped it from being too dry as you don't get all that much of the jus. My main was, of course, steak. The cut on offer was sirloin, served with triple cooked chips and fiery peppercorn sauce. I asked for my steak medium-rare and it arrived perfectly cooked. The only downside was perhaps that the outside was a bit pale and didn't have that charred, crisp exterior. Regardless, it was a quality piece of steak cooked exactly as I wanted, pink and tender. The chips were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and the peppercorn sauce was gorgeous. It was a little sweeter than I would have liked, but had a good kick to it while being deliciously smooth and creamy. For dessert I went for the Dark Chocolate and Orange Mousse, which was accompanied by crumbled up carrot cake, citrus jelly and ginger popcorn. The popcorn to me was a bit unnecessary and I didn't really like it, but the carrot cake and citrus jellies were great. The mousse itself was rich, smooth and full of flavour - topped with a piece of candied orange peel. It was the perfect sized dessert after the steak and chips and I finished my meal feeling just the right amount of full. The service to begin with was very quick and impressive, our bottle of house red was brought to us almost immediately, and our first and second courses were brought to us surprisingly fast. There was a slight dip in the service between finishing our steak and having our dessert order taken, however I blame this on it being the busy graduation period and the staff were apologetic for the delay. Our bill came to a total of £44 because we ordered an extra course, but this to me is great value for money. Two steaks, two desserts, a bottle of wine and a starter for £44? Not bad in my book! The quality of the food for the price you pay is a really high standard and just goes to show, you don't have to spend a lot to get a good steak!

Searching online for somewhere that was just a little bit different for a special occasion, we came across Le Petit Cochon and liked the look of the seafood choices on the menu. It's just a few steps off the main drag in Radnor Street (opposite the end of Kelvin Way), and seems to have been a burger bar in a former life. It was a Monday night, so they weren't exactly busy, and so the service was friendly and attentive, and we were soon tucking into our starters. We had the hot smoked salmon and asparagus as a starter, and straight away I realised that the food was going to be great, as the asparagus was cooked to perfection. Often the ends of the stems can get a bit stringy, but not here. Not stringy and not limp, just perfect crunch. For mains, we both had the pollock, which is a fish you don't see that much here, although it is becoming more popular. The portion size seemed a bit small, but in retrospect it was just right as it left room for some pudding! Again, the veg were cooked to 'al dente' perfection. The whole was washed down with a half-carafe of very dry white wine from their extensive wine list, and we left replete and happy.

The menu has so many Scottish foods in it, there's no doubt this is a Scottish fare restaurant. I did have to look some of it up because even other Scottish restaurants hadn't had things like cranachan or rumbledethumps on their menus. Ordered were: bread, beef stovies, lamb rump, slow braised beef short rib, cranachan, and chocolate brownie. The beef stovies is beef stew with a potato pancake hat served in a cast iron cauldron. Very cool presentation, and quite a tasty stew inside. I liked the small cut of everything, so it was easy to eat. The lamb was so tender and flavorful, without being overcooked. I substituted rumbledethumps for the polenta so I could try some, it was a lot like mashed potatoes with some extra flavor in it from the cabbage. The black garlic emulsion was a little earthy but went with the lamb so well as a result. My only fault would be the mint drizzle being too sweet for my taste. The short rib was masterful, essentially fall off the bone, and a good herby rub. The desserts were a step down from the mains. The cranachan felt like it had bromelain in it, breaking down my tongue as I was eating it. Outside of that sharpness, a very tasty and solid dessert. The brownie was heavy and fudgy, so if that's your type of brownie then it's here for you. Otherwise it's too much on a stomach already packing the amazing dinner preceding it. All in all, what a place, what a meal, recommended.

I believe the mezzanine is free to hire during the week. First up - this place is really, really dark. I actually don't even know how it's so dark, even in the middle of the day. It really does take a bit for your eyes to adjust to the place. The decor is a bit outdated but nothing offensive and the mezzanine space is great as it's actually quite bright and cosy without being squashy (mind your head if you're tall!). There's a good wine list and they are reasonably priced. We had a few platters for our group - vegetarian and meat - and they both seemed to be very well received, particularly the red pepper hummus on the veggie platter. From what I remember, the platters are described as serving 2 people but I'd actually say it's more like 4 as they're really quite big. On the night we visited, it was really busy as it was Easter Thursday and so our reserved area was hotly sought-after by people looking for a seat. When I was leaving later in the night, there was lots of rowdy blokes downstairs so that was a little off-putting (but I was on my way out anyway). I expect that on a normal night this is a quite a pleasant bar to hang out in.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that all the food was that of the light bite nature - the pate and oatcakes went extremely well with my choice of wine (or so the waiter told me; to me, they were just incredibly tasty). Trying to choose which glass of wine I'd like was the hardest part - they have over 13 pouring wines, ranging from pinot grigios to prosecco...mmm... and that's not including the hundred other bottles we could have had (not that I would spend anywhere near £218 on a bottle of anything). It's a nice little place - it's got a rustic feel about it, and is frequented by a generally older crowd (ok, I'd say maybe 75% of the customers had greying or white hair, which isn't a bad thing, but I'm 20-something, and it's not EXACTLY my kinda place). I can see why it's popular - the food, the wine, and the ambience - and it has made me actually reconsider my initial statement - however, I may be a few years off becoming a regular, as yet.
