So happy I remembered this spot on a recent visit to Freeport! I had been wandering around Wolf Neck State Park for a couple hours and was hungry. I picked up this yummy lunch along with a few other items! I'll be back for more!

Sneaky Sneaky Bow Street Market....Hannaford? :) Do what you do Bow Street, because I love this market. A "hidden gem" in Freeport meaning that it is not a tacky ugly box store. It feels like a cute neighborhood market with the efficiencies of a big business. The only "negatives" I have about this place is the tight parking lot during the tourist seasons. It is a smaller lot and when big vehicles or vehicles with things in tow, make this lot a bit treacherous to walk or drive in. Walk swiftly and look carefully. Don't forget your reusable bags. They do have bags for you, but I have seen some employees flash a look on their face when people don't bring them. :) Ok, back to the reason why I said, "Hannaford" is because they do carry the Inspirations line that Hannaford carries. But that's where the comparison to Hannaford stops. The LOCAL selection of products; produce, pre-made foods (i.e. pasta from Bruno's!!), snacks, baked goods, meats and cheeses and craft beers. So many things to LOVE about this market. I uploaded some of my favorites that I buy from this store. The staff at the meat counter so very nice. The cashiers are very nice as well. I wish I lived closer to this market, but distance won't keep me away. I can do all of my "local" shopping at this one little market that is like the Tardis - much bigger (from a selection perspective) on the inside. I highly recommend Bow Street Market

    Full service butcher....good stuff!!

Take a neighborhood grocery store, a local butcher, a gourmet food shop, takeout counter and a fancy wine/beer/spirits purveyor and smash them all into one building and you have Bow Street Market. There really is something for everyone here. The staff is friendly and helpful - especially a couple of the cashiers who are ridiculously friendly (in a good way)!! My only criticism is that the space is small. During busy times, the parking lot is a bit hectic and some of the aisles are so tight that only one cart at a time can pass. Also, the prices are quite high. I understand that quality products are going to be a bit higher but the cost prohibits me from making regular visits here. Nevertheless, you need to check this place out even if it is just for special occasions.

Though Bow Street Market is a Hannaford Supermarket affiliated store, it's independent and unique enough to have many of its own products. And though we've enjoyed many of their outstanding meat cuts, a variety of local items they carry and their full liquor selections, I've come to Yelp today to sing the praises of their store made smoked salmon salad with salmon supplied from Maine's Duck Trap fisheries. This salad is first of all salmony, appropriately salty, chunky, and filled with tiny bits of red onion and celery and just enough mayo to hold it together. What a great find at this fun to shop at market. I eat it on Triscuits, corn chips, baby carrots, or to be embarrassingly honest...from my finger. I love it when I discover something previously unknown to me. And though I have been eating smoked salmon, lox/Nova since early childhood, I am so happy to have recently found this. Great job Bow Street Market! It's sold in various sized small tubs at $10.99/lb. and well worth this price.

I stayed in Freeport for a month in 2011, and frequented this establishment for various groceries and alcohol. The prices are moderate, and comparable to other independent grocers, like Royal River on the other side of Freeport. Their meat case is very nice and fresh, as is the produce section. They also have a small section dedicated to Gluten Free products. There wasn't a massive frozen foods (positive), or a bulk foods section (negative). They did have a rather expansive wine, beer and liquor selection. I highly recommend supporting this place (over Shaw's for example). I would have given this place 5 stars if the prices were lower, if they had a nice bulk foods section, if they had a larger gluten free selection (like Royal River Market), and if they didn't have a redbox or lottery machines.

You have to try this :-)

Just to be clear, we did not go on a long drinking weekend in Maine!…read more We did go to Cold River Vodka for a tasting though. Wow! First off, their blueberry vodka (made with Maine Blueberries) may be the best Vodka I've ever had. Their gin, also amazing. Their aged vodka tastes like scotch! The place is fun, the crew is fun! I also learned the origin of English folk drinking Gin and Tonic (it was to help with Malaria)! It is illegal to ship alcohol in the US, so you have to carry it home in your suitcase. I am happy to say all three bottles made it home safely!!!

Vodka and gin are made and bottled right on site here using local Maine potatoes in the process. The entire business and production area is housed in a lovely old building with the distillery operation located on the main level. One flight up finds you in the tasting and salesroom. There was a tour already in progress when we arrived so we went right up to the tasting room where we had the place to ourselves along with the lovely staff person. She poured us tastes of their two signature vodkas: the regular and the blueberry flavored. Along with potatoes, blueberries are another signature Maine crop. Both vodkas were delicious. Normally, I don't think vodka tastes like much of anything and it's more about how smoothly it goes down. The plain vodka had a smooth and subtle flavor to it; very clean, crisp and easy to drink. While I am not very knowledgeable about flavored vodkas what I can tell you is that the blueberry had a lovely natural aroma of fresh blueberries with a hint of their flavor that was not overwhelming. It was subtle and agreeable. We purchased a bottle of the plain vodka; they were out of the blueberry. I turned down a taste of the gin since I don't care for it. I will use the bottle we bought simply to sip or in martinis. It's too good on its own to dilute with anything else and I think should be enjoyed as simply as possible. The tasting room also sells an array t-shirts and baseball hats and other souvenirs emblazoned with the name of the product: Cold River Vodka. On our way out, the tour that had been in progress was over. The tour guide greeted us warmly and offered us our own private tour which was very kind. Seeing all the gleaming equipment along with the huge 1,000 pound sacks of potatoes was quite something. This is a small but impressive operation. What we found here was delicious locally crafted vodka using all local ingredients, especially those Maine potatoes. We're happy we discovered Cold River.

That's EXACTLY what you'll find at The Vault, which is such a wonderful, gem in the Lewiston/Auburn area. The owner, Susan, and her staff not only appreciate good wine and beer themselves, but they're incredibly knowledgable about it too. When it comes to my libations, I don't want to be (up)sold on whatever product needs to be moved out. I want to have intelligent conversation with educated folks on what they suggest, why, and have them make recommendations to me about what I might like after I tell them (and they listen with open ears) what it is I personally prefer. And that's part of what The Vault folks offer; they take the time out to get to know you (whether you're a regular or just passing through) so that your experience at their store each and every time you go in is tailored completely around you in that moment and not around whatever retail agenda that might have. Locally craft beers? They do that. Budget-friendly wines? They do that, too. And now they're offering flavorful and unique balsamic vinegars and olive oils, too for both samples and purchasing (although downing a shooter of olive oil is frowned up... The Vault is classier than your average beer and wine store, so don't be one of "those people" [*ahem* like myself] who rolls in and starts taking shots of EVOO like it's going out of style). If you're in the area - even if you're not - and you're looking for something specific, you should talk to Susan and her team. If they can't help you, they'll be able to find someone who can! Also, The Vault frequently hosts wine and beer tastings (something I'm an avid believer in - it's a great way to discover new beverages without spending an exorbitant amount of money on something you may not end up liking), so be sure to check that out as well!
