Our tour guide suggested this place for anything we might need before our tour. If you're looking to get accused of stealing, this is your place. Popped in to break a twenty dollar bill so I'd have smaller bills for a tip. The store didn't have much so I decided to purchase a pack of gum. Honestly it was the least impressive store I had been in. Odd selection of goods and a grill that serves food, which didn't look at all appealing. The young woman running the grill rang me up. As I left the store I heard someone call out to me if I had left with gum. I went back in thinking maybe something was wrong with the gum? Nope, I was asked aggressively, I might add, if I paid for it. The employee apologized after the young woman vouched that she did ring me up. I was not happy it took her a minute to state this. I get thieves come in all forms but seriously? I'm a middle aged tourist. My hotel was right by this store and I made sure I didn't go in there again. Funny thing is, the girl actually didn't give me the correct change. I was shorted 10 cents. I figured it wasn't worth the hassle. So not only did I pay for overpriced gum, didn't get my correct change, and then got accused of stealing in front of everyone that was in the store. Classy. The highlight? Family and friends that asked about my trip found it hysterical because of how ludicrous it is. read more

If you're in need of a quick drink, looking for local beer, a bag of chips, some deli items, or tampons, pop in Casco Variety which is conveniently located in the heart of Old Port (Commercial Street). This is a small variety store with a very limited selection of products. They only carry one type of dog food.... They have a good selection of beer and hard seltzers. They sell milk and dairy products at reasonable prices. They also have a variety of snacks to choose from. The service was adequate. Overall, their prices were very fair! read more

So convenient!!! Moved from nyc to Portland and I miss all the little bodegas in manhattan. It's so great to have this option right near casco ferry terminal. Toilet paper, great beer selections, good grilled sandwiches! read more

Few convenience stores at the heart of Portland Casco bay. Get your refreshments and water here while making your way around the pier. Very good selection of local drinks and beer as well. Also good delicious sandwiches, made to order. Got a few ham egg and cheese and beacon egg sandwiches before heading out the bay on the ferry. Easy access and quick checkout. read more

This shop is a great little grab and go! Need a quick pick me up snack? They have the salty and sweet to push you forward. Dying of thirst? They have nice cool beverages ready for purchase. Still send postcards, like myself? They have a well stocked rack. There's also a grill that seems popular in the morning, although I did not try that. The cashier was really nice and relaxed, the latter being a fine quality for a tourist town! (At least when cruise ships come in) read more

Stock up on snacks, have a seat at the counter (no, don't expect anything-it's space on a storage area but it works). The staff was really sweet, helping the hangry child eat something besides candy. Dying of thirst, I went looking for a store that wasn't closed yet on a 7pm on Sunday. Casco definitely did the trick. They seemed to be the 7-11 of Commercial Street. The prices were good, and, a bit strangely, they have a whole section of hot sauces. The cashier was very nice, too. Lots of chips varieties and even a bit of beer. read more

This store has it all. Need a Duck Tour ticket? this is your place. Need an ice cream? Check. How about some chips, homemade baked goods, smokes, sandwich, drink, sewing kit, aspirin... Check, check, check. My favorite is the turkey blt. Fresh roasted turkey hand picked and put on your sandwich. Delish. The store is cramped, many items are not marked w prices, and can get crowded with only a few patrons but it's a great staple spot on Custom House Wharf/Commercial Street. read more

We stayed the weekend in Portland across the street. It is a true local secret because you wouldn't think to stop in. We got cheap snacks for the kids, Mike's hard lemonade for our room, excellent egg sandwiches for breakfast & absolutely unbelievable for lunch: they roast their own turkey & make you a huge, cheap, delicious sandwiches! Eating at Casco Variety should be considered a criminal offense. I never realized turkey could be so bland and dry, it was as if I was eating a mouth full of sand without my dentures in. I immediately ejected the sandwich from my person and had second lunch elsewhere... buyer beware. read more

PLEASE. DON'T EAT HERE.. I've never written a yelp review before, but I need to share. I had a Turkey BLT here, passing though Portland and got Salmonella Poisoning. I am not mistaken where it came from. Not only was I extremely sick for a week, but it has led to double knee infection, hospitalized for a week, and currently out of work for 6 weeks. This has caused reactionary arthritis, putting me on crutches, home antibiotic IV for infection and I will eventually need steroid shots. This is now something I will deal with for the rest of my life. A simple action of not cooking/cooling a whole roasted Turkey properly. By law, The Board of Health was notified, and they will comb through the place. I never want to see a business suffer, I don't want revenge. I want you to understand the weight of your actions, and how they can change ones life forever, by a sandwich. read more

This is one of those places that doesn't put prices on most of their drinks. Very annoyed when one is trying to decide what to buy for cheap and hydration. $2 for Gatorade and $1.25 for a Coke, I just wish I could have made a more informed decision on what to drink.
