BoxUnion is the best! I am NOT fit and normally dread working out. My friend took me here after a pretty nasty breakup and be around all that positive energy really makes the time/workout go by quickly! I cannot say it enough, these classes are SUCH a great stress relief! The trainers are ALL AWESOME and so motivating! I've taken classes (so far) with Taylor, Chris, Kyle and Alexis. ALL of the classes were great and even my uncoordinated butt can (mostly) keep up! I cannot wait to take more classes with them! If you need the additional help, they have a first timer special for Private Training $40/30 min or $69/60 min. If you do try it out, I would DEFINITELY recommend the hour training session to have enough time to review everything you want to go over. I had a private training session with Jon Jon to go over the basics (again) and it was a great informative and stress-free training. They checked me in so I wouldn't get a late fee but they could have let me in since it was the last class of the night. I needed a workout and my sales appointment had run late. I'm a fan after my first class! It felt similar to other music based cardio classes, and the staff was very friendly and helpful when I first arrived at the studio. As someone who has taken a few boxing and Muay Thai classes, I was interested to check out this studio. Overall the workout was good, but it left me missing other aspects of a boxing class: things like mitt work, and an actual jump rope. But, if you are looking for a fun alternative to a cycling class, this might be for you! read more

I have mixed opinions, good work out that will get you sweating but I found certain aspects of the place and website confusing. Promos: So I saw online you as a first time user you could buy 2 classes for $30 (instead of $30 per class) so I purchased this through their site, and you get to reserve your bag. Only limitation is this expires within 2 weeks of purchase! What was confusing to me was after I made an online account I got offered a free class? I wish that was advertised more than the 2 for $30 situation. Finding it: The location is on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica nestled in a complex, and the street makes it hard to get into because of a large island divider. It is easier to turn right into the proper parking lot when you are coming from the south. Parking: This is what bothered me. I called and saw on the yelp page there was a lot for $1.50 for the first 2 hours, but I didn't get an address. *Edit* Also I couldn't find the parking info on the website at the time but it is posted now under "Book a Bag". When I called the staff told me it was the lot "North of Box Union" so I found a lot... but it was the wrong one and I had to pay $15 for 1 hour -_-. The CORRECT parking lot is 1705-1725 Ocean Avenue. This seems like a really silly detail that could easily be addressed. The place: BoxUnion is cute (very IG-worthy) and when you walk in there is a wall of lockers against the back that are free to use. There's restrooms with showers for men and women on either side . The restrooms are stocked with nice amenities (deodorant, malin + goetz face wash, blow dryer) but what I found odd was despite all this stuff there was no disinfecting wipes to wipe your boxing gloves after? The other boxing gyms I've been to generally offer these. However, the facility is very clean. The class: There tend to be more women than men attending the class but there were still men attending. The class reminds me of soul cycle for boxing, kinda like CruBox but better guidance. If you come early enough they have an instructor-in-training led session where they teach you how to do the 6 punches. I think I know my basics pretty well but I find it confusing that in the classes instead of just saying what the punch is i.e. "right hook" they give them numbers "1-4-5-5" etc. This made it harder for me to follow despite the fact I've done quite a few boxing classes. The first time I took the class I didn't get any corrections, but the second time the instructor-in-training walked around and gave corrections which I really liked! On a really minor note, sometimes it was just hard to see the writing on the board (the combo) because of the lighting / it was dark and cramped. I'm tall so I had to maneuver doing some of the HIIT exercises. Wow sorry for the essay but long story short, great for a cardio work out but not the best for learning basics of boxing. I would come back but probably wouldn't not my first choice unless convenient. read more

After hearing rave reviews from my friends, I decided to give BoxUnion a try. What an incredible experience! Think boxing meets SoulCycle meets Barre. Classes are 45 minutes and consist of a 3 song warm up/demo (no gloves), boxing set to the beat of the music, arms and abs with 2-5lb weights and an all out boxing round to finish! Glove rentals are free your first class and then $2 after that. You will also need to purchase hand wraps for $6, but they are yours to keep and can be thrown in the wash. There are 40 bags in the room and the instructor demonstrates at the front on the podium while also moving around throughout the class. I was lucky that Deja was my instructor for my first class. Her energy is infectious and I left feeling like a hundred bucks. I would definitely take her class again! Pro Tip: Go to the 6AM class and you can park on the street in front of the studio for free! read more

I took my first classes back in January (as part of a 'new year new me' crisis) via ClassPass and literally got addicted so I canceled ClassPass and stuck to BoxUnion SM. I've never really been physically active but those guys really got me hooked! If you've never hit a bag in a dark room to the beat of the music you've been missing out... I always walk out happier than I walked in and feel more connected to my body than ever before. My coaches (Elise, Cory, Lo, Celina) are the best. Best boxing experience I've ever had. This is like, the SoulCycle of boxing and I always dread going to class but once I leave, I always feel super accomplished and like I deserve some in-n-out or something for all that hard work. I always try to take a class with Stevie because I think she's awesome and her class is always so motivating and upbeat. If you're new to BoxUnion, they have a parking lot underground a couple streets away and it's $1 for parking. Try to arrive right when a previous class gets let out because that's when parking spots will usually open up asap. For your first time, you have to buy wraps that are ~$8 and then rent gloves if you don't want to purchase you're own (renting is a couple dollars). I highly suggest BoxUnion as it's a great full body workout and I'm always drenched in sweat once I'm out of there. Try something new and go for it! read more

I've been to tons of workout classes and I usually go to box n burn, but this class was SO much fun. The music was poppin (hip hop and dance music) and we punched and kicked to the eat, making it a fun but impactful workout. They give you a pair of wrap gloves for your first time, and when you walk into the room, you find a punching bag in the room and get ready for a bomb session. Didn't really sweat much, but I did feel sore the next day. I'd say the intensity was medium compared to box n burn, but it definitely gets your heart rate up. Will definitely be back! read more

BoxUnion is the best place for an effective 45-minute workout. There's so many boxing gyms that are predominantly composed of male athletes, and sometimes you have to risk feeling awkward or even getting hurt to participate. There is none of that here and you'll see that quite a few women show up to this class. During the workout, you'll do a mix of crossfit-like exercises as well as boxing. The instructors do a very good job of explaining the numbers, and if you are new to boxing, you'll pick it up quickly. There is no judgement here or risk of getting injured. You work at your own comfort level and the instructors are extremely motivating. This is one of those classes where you'll walk out feeling better about your body and life. The instructors here are phenomenal and they will encourage you to push yourself to your potential, something you can take with you after your workout. It's food for the body and spirit. Oh, and... The parking was not a problem at all thanks to the metered parking and surprisingly affordable underground parking near the place. When I arrived, the front desk was so friendly and helpful by answering all the questions I had and showing me where everything was. (Sorry for all the questions, I tried to look up as much as I could on the website.) I took a Champion (private) Training and two classes with Taylor P. and I absolutely loved it. She was so great at showing me the correct way to throw my punches and move my feet. When I took her Signature class, it was such a perfect combination of hitting the bag, HIIT, and stretching that you want in a workout. I never regret venturing across LA to take class here. Firstly, the studio is beautiful. The lobby area has super cute retail, plenty of lockers, and benches to sit on. The sign in process is easy and the staff is super friendly. The classes themselves are a terrific workout. If you are interested in an intense boxing only class, this probably won't be for you. But if you are looking to sweat your booty off in a room filled with great music and positive vibes, you'll love it. Definitely intense, just not in the way you think of when you picture a boxing gym. The regular class is 45 minutes. In the room, each student has their own bag, and the instructors lead the class in a fun, easy to follow, yet super challenging way. You'll start with a warm up, and by the end of class you'll know a few combinations. But don't think its going to be easy. You will be sweating so much by the time its over. It really is a full body workout and I have never not been sore after class. I especially love Sydney, Deja, and Kyle's classes. Still need to get in there to take class with Tara! Right near the ocean, street parking is pretty easy, but they also have a garage you can park in just a block away. read more

I found BoxUnion on ClassPass and decided to make the drive out to Santa Monica to try it out. I was running a bit late and called the front desk to see if they had any parking close by and to notify them that I'd be there right on the dot, and the staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. They have parking on the same block in a structure that has a ton of spots, so there's never a problem. My first class was with Kyle and I loved it. Boxing can be intimidating for some he went over the fundamentals of the drills we'd be working on in the beginning. The class in general was doable and challenging for beginners yet also a tough class for people who have been boxing for awhile. The studio itself is extremely clean (in comparison to other boxing studios) which really makes a huge difference on the overall experience. Very happy with my experience and have already been back for more classes with Kyle. read more

I absolutely love this place. It breeds positivity, something we need more in this world. The instructors are amazing & very encouraging, especially to newcomers. There's no stuck up attitude here. I love boxing because it's a great workout and awesome stress relief. One instructor, towards the end of class, said if anyone has said anything negative to you or put you down, this is your time to leave it here on the bag. I love that. Came here with a group of friends and loved it! It was my first time boxing so I was a little worried I wouldn't get the hang of it. But the instructor was very clear and excited to teach! I felt so welcomed! The lobby is clean and spacious with lockers and benches to prep for the workout. They had hair ties and ear plugs at the front desk for free. Plus the bathroom has showers, towels, and toiletries to help you clean up after a super sweaty workout. Such a cool workout, and such a cool gym! The high energy boxing class I took here was phenomenal, and I am so excited to go back! They have a bunch of bags for group classes, you start with shadow boxing and then get to hit the bag after your warm up.
