I've been working at a friend's farm over in Bull Valley a lot, and they've been placating (read: bribing) me with occassional treats from this place, even though they themselves are nutritionally and philosophically opposed to such stuff. I guess I'm a bad influence... I've found that I'm growing to like the place; it is always reliably clean, though the staff can be a little on the surly, uncommunicative side most of the time. But hey -- its an effing gas station, not a fine dining restaurant. Sometimes grumpy can be charming, if it's done right. No, this is not "Ed Debevics charming," but what do you want for $2.22? I've given up on the whole ice tea thing; I'm much happier for having just let the whole thing go. I stick to coffee and icees, as needed, and things go along fine. So, I was a bit surprised when I got to the Mchenry location and found the ice tea machine and the lemon container both dry as a bone. When I asked the gentleman who worked there if I could get some he waved his hand and said: "No--if it's not there then it's gone. And we're not going to make any more tonight because nobody wants it." Which confused me because I was standing there telling him I wanted it. It was...I believe the technical phrase is, "Uber sucky service." I also watched him throw a bit of a hissy fit to his co worker about whether or not the pop machines were clean and how someone else--who wasn't present at the moment-- would just, "Have to deal with it..." Maybe he was having a bad night. That's understandable. It happens. But I still won't be going back.. The experience sucked monkey privates.

I finally asked the lady if she needed something and her reply was yes please , I am handicapped and can't fill the tank , I called the number on the pump for just this purpose but the person didn't answer , it was evident that the person inside already came out once to help her because the hose was already in her car and the pump actually pumped about. a dollars worth of gas but then it kicked off . So this lady was trying everything that she could to get the guys attention and he totally ignored her . He had to see on his control panel that the pump wasn't working anymore . So I took her credit card and pumped her gas for her because the lazy POS behind the counter wouldn't . Buddy the 2001 ADA law requires you to help . Do your job. I told her to never use this place again and take her business elsewhere. Where they care about their clients . I will never use this gas station again, I was thinking that this could have been my own mother being treated like this . To the owner whoever is the person working at 3:45 pm on December 19th 2022 should be fired because you lost my business, the ladies , my mothers and everyone that I persuade to not come here .

The pumps aren't super old, but have a lot of wear-and-tear, resulting in difficulty pumping (trigger won't stay on, venturi sensor cuts out early, or the interface will run slow). At least they are designed so it's hard to install a skimmer, in addition to the pumps being in plain sight all the time. Near as I can tell, the fuel here is good Exxon/Mobil, and I've never seen this place run out of gas. The little market has a decent selection, despite the small size, but the prices aren't great (it's cheaper to go to the CVS across the street for most stuff). The only time I've used the bathroom, it seemed like it hadn't been cleaned since the morning. I would give this location 3 stars, but it earns a 4th star for having a pretty good (at least as of winter 2023) automatic bay car wash, which I think is an older private-labeled PDQ Tandem Surfline. The unit seems to be well-serviced, and is VERY liberal with the soap and dryer time.

In fact, this one had no line at all during our fill-up. It has 4 islands, with the 3 leftmost having 3 pumps (thus requiring parallel parking if the middle one is the only one open) while the far right only has 2. (22 nozzles in all). Price per gallon was $3.799 for 87, but 93 octane was $5.099 (a 33% markup)...super glad that our car was fine with 87. It's close enough to the Costco warehouse to notice how empty the parking lot felt on a Monday afternoon. This time, though, my wife didn't want to browse (probably because we would have to take it home by plane).

Some officious and racist girl at the attendant stand tells me I can't use it because it's expired. She tells me she doesn't have the code buttons to put in (her first excuse) then tells me she can't let me thru bcoz it's expired and she can't do anything about (causing a long line behind me while she argues with me and then says I should pay the difference) her second excuse. Then she says she needs to call her supervisor who tells her to take all my expired receipts (all paid car washes mind you) and take my license down so as to not let me get future car washes. (Seriously, all this for an $8 car wash) she then tells me that she'll let me go and to never come back because "We don't want your kind back here!" This is the racist comment that Just put me over so I tell her to F off. To make matters worse as soon as my car exits the car wash, this bald older a hole confronts me and screams at me as to why I made his employee cry and why I was screaming at her. I tell this douche that he needs to train his employees to not scream at customers and that his employee is a racist and said she didn't want my kind here! He tells me that his employee would never say that as if he witnessed the whole thing which he did not and just walks away. Nice job alienating a long time customer. Never more! I'm pumping gas right across the street!

After all the weird weather, back and forth with snow and rain, and soooo much dirt, I celebrated the first warm day of the year and treated our car to a bath. It was time. It was a simple bath, with no bells and whistles, but now I can drive around with dignity in the school drop off line. If you didn't know, there's a car wash in the back of Shell. It's hidden, unless you see the sign at the pump. The great thing is if you plan to use the car wash, you have two options. Pay at the pump and receive $.10 off each gallon of gas, or if you don't want gas you can head to the attendant at the car wash and pay for one of the following three options: * Regular wash $5 * Plus wash adds sealer wax and under carriage rust inhibitor $6 * Premium will get you wheel brightener and polish wax for $7 I take the cheap seats for $5 and haven't tried the upgrade services, but there is no extra tip to pay, so maybe next time. You are on your own here, and they do have interior vacuums available right around the corner from the wash. There is a yearly car wash plan available. They gave us an optional punch pass. After a few washes the next one is free!
