Had a fantastic time playing at Brackenridge golf course! The rates are very reasonable and they are very nice at this golf course. outside of the course is a statue of Harvey Penick - of little red book fame! This course is one of the oldest courses in Texas and was the site of the Texas open. It was a cool chilly 60 degrees but it was fun! I used rental clubs and it amazed me how many holes I could play when the ball just rolled on the ground. I lost a ball but I never went into a bunker. YES! The carts have GPS and although I missed my range finder, it was still fun! It took a while but I eventually figured out the clubs and after that it was smooth sailing! I usually hit a draw but driver wanted to do a cut so after I gave up and let it do its thing, everything was great! They give out Callaway golf clubs. They told me the clubs were about 6 months old I played with someone that knew the course and I had fun as he informed me about the course history and Texas in general. 4 hour round and it was just an amazing, fun course. I wish I could have another try but this is a memory I won't forget. On the last hole, I was supposed to take one extra club and when I looked at club I used - uh oh, wrong club and into the water. But I hit it perfectly! I took more club, choked down and hit it to 3 feet. So for the conditions - there is a nice roll on the drives, the greens were aerated but still good. Very windy and it was fun to deal with the wind!!!! This is beautiful golf course with tons of history! Love this course! Thank you Brackenridge golf course! read more

This is an update for the course, I last played last year. Courses have suffered this summer, given the blistering heat and the unforgiving drought we experienced. But here is very good news for the intrepid golfer. The course has been well tended, and while there may be found some dry area in fairway, and some thinner turf, in general the course is pretty good shape. The greens are in excellent condition, and the bunkers are well maintained. Kudos to the ground crew!! But, WARNING: The rough around the greens is tall Bermuda, as in TALL Bermuda, so think "be forceful" with your chips to escape the clutches of the grass! As usual, the first four par holes run close in parallel, so errant shots may land in adjoining fairways: listen carefully for the dread warning of "fore". I had previously listed Riverside as my favorite on the Alamo tour, but conditions there have really suffered with the drought. Now, I consider Brackenridge the better play of the two! Enjoy yelpers...and don't hit the ball too many times during the round!! read more

I'm not sure how this course is so highly rated and pricey. We were able to play alone on a Sunday afternoon which was surprising because it was a nice day. The first nine holes are so close together. There were two other players who's balls came onto my fairway before I even finished the first hole. The street and a concrete ditch are right next to the course so it's easy to over hit and lose a ball. The second nine is definitely better than the first. There's a some nice bridges and the San Antonio river running through it. The greens are nice and smooth and well kept. That part is nice but then there's trash in the river part of the golf course. I would think green fees could go towards cleaning it up. read more

Last weekend I played here for the first time. Traveled from out of town with a group of friends to play. There are a lot of trees and they can punish you for errant shots, but if you're not playing way off the fairway there aren't any problems. The fairways and greens were terrific shape. Had to escape a few bunkers and the sand is well kept. Not hard and clumpy like im used to playing elsewhere. The course itself is very scenic. This is one of the few courses courses I have played where id love to walk. Our group got tons of great pics and we all agreed its a must play again. read more

Great course for a muni! We had a 8 am tee time and was late by an hour. They still let us off and let us start on the back. Very good team. The course is not long and is a shot makers course. The greens and the fairways were in good shape. Greens are furry so if you like to hit firm putts this is your course. As noted we played the back so did not get to play the front but thought it was a good layout and a course that will challenge your shot making. I would play again. read more

I love Brackenridge Golf Course. This place give me two of thing this in live that I love the most: Golf and History. The course opened in 1916, the first municipal golf course in Texas and the second in the United States. Playing here is a time trip to how golf was played in the early 1900's. The course has some quirky no longer found features like flat bottom sand traps and square greens. The course is short by modern standards but the elevated greens add length. The narrow fairways place the ability to play target golf at a premium. The Texas Golf Hall of Fame is currently being constructed and will be a very nice addition to historical Brackenridge Golf Course. I probably won't return. Front 9 was super slow as all holes lap along each other, resulting in people hitting their second shot out of fairways. Back 9 was cool, Better experience. All the greens were squares, very boring design to be course. Greens were extremely bumpy and not managed well. Made reading puts impossible . For a municipal, it's about what you expect, reasonable price as well. read more

Challenging yet playable for all levels , I'm not gonna lie and say it was the most beautiful course I've played but it was well kept and you can tell they take care of there course and are doing what's necessary to make it enjoyable. hello this is Bill Campbell, San Antonio, Golfer I gotta tell you don't waste your money coming to Brackenridge golf course it's the last week of May 2023 and the golf course is pure trash. They charge a premium price above our free punchcard, and quite frankly, they should pay us to play here. For the last month the greens are the worst I've ever seen. The practice green is a disaster. I used to be in the Golf business with my degree in agronomy. I taught superintendents how to grow grass. This golf course needs to fix the horrible condition they have gotten this course into. This course will not be playable for another couple months. So save your money. read more

Facilities are really nice and the course is relatively played friendly until you get to the worst greens I've ever played. They are completely destroyed, bumpy and nearly unplayable. For an $80 round you would expect a much higher level of grounds maintenance. read more

If you want to play an overrated and overpriced course then look no further. The only thing this course has to offer is an old time feel in the heart of the city. Other than that the greens are basically concrete and the fairways are a nice 50/50 mix of either dirt or ultra short/dry grass. I would definitely not recommend this course or any Alamo city trail course for that matter. They've all gone downhill, even after the renovations. Greens were the best part of the course. Too many large construction vehicles trying to be discreet on this "jewel" of a course as the claim goes. Mowing machines and weed whackers on the course in line of sight but trying to be courteous. Staff in clubhouse were great. Pace of play was good and the time between groups was perfect. No groups riding carts were running into each other. It is different for those who are walking the course. I would go again once the renovation is completed read more

In town for a womens college tournament. 100 girls, coaches, parents, etc. filthy bathrooms on the course. No soap, no toilet paper. Lots of construction, so maybe the course will be nicer in the future. The area has so many homeless, someone was sleeping in the woods just off #4! The course looks like it gets a lot of play. 1916 A. W. Tillinghast design (restored 2008) that's a must-play in San Antonio. Tee-to-green, 6250 from tips. If you can, walk it. Conditioning is private club level, at a muny no less, but the city treats this course really well. There's 6 squared greens, a (I suppose I could call it) reverse Redan par 3, intimidating bunkering/depth perception going on, gorgeous old trees. Front 9 you may not lose a ball. Back nine crosses the creek several times in interesting ways. read more

So overrated and overpriced especially for a mini. Often backed up so expect a 5+ hours round. Again, way overpriced for the condition.

My son has been being playing this course in tournament golf for the past 10 years. I have seen the greens when they were in great conditions but we played it today and not a single green was what I had remembered. Many greens losing grass with numerous bare spots or the grass was so fuzzy you couldn't get the ball to the hole. This is supposed to be the flagship course for Alamo Trails but it is not worth the money they charge you to play. Bunker renovation is going well but you can't afford to lose your greens in the process. Last time we will play this course until they until they figure out how to get it back in playable condition. Really disappointed for such a historical golf course. read more

Well the course is historical and beautiful, and very well maintained. I will give it that. It is expensive, really short, and ridiculously close together though. The front 9 are tight, right next to each other... fairways within steps. I almost got hit by a stray drive twice (like within five feet of me.) The guys behind us were playing so fast that I felt extremely pressured the whole time and we were 40 MINUTES ahead of pace by the 9th hole. Turns out they let the guys behind them play through, so I guess they must have been getting pressed too. With a 7:15 tee time, we were at breakfast at 10:30. This is not an enjoyable game of golf, especially for the price! It's pretty bunker-heavy too. We did enjoy the square greens, and again, it was a nicely maintained course. If you like to work on your short game, or are in a hurry... go for it. Just watch out that you don't get pegged... read more

Considering the price I was expecting better conditions, the pace was also concerning being that there was no Marshall making sure everyone is up to pace. Brackenridge, or Old Brack is a really good public course that is run by the City of San Antonio. Have played City courses across the country, this is one of the best. It was redesigned a while ago and the back 9 is a fun layout. The front 9 is pretty tight and can be a bit of a shooting gallery as there isnt much separating the fairways. The staff is very nice, the course is in really good shape. All around solid experience. It would get a higher rating, but the course is pretty flat and not that challenging, but it is fun. read more

Not sure what all the complaints are about...it is a fairly priced muni. Greens held a shot and rolled true. Played day after Thanksgiving, typical Texas winter golf, fairways and rough still in very good condition. Not a long hitters course, all about shot placement. Only complaint would be traps. A bit hard pan...fine for fairway bunkers, but green side a bit hard to control distance and get any spin. Have played all over the world, simply a fun track. Play early to avoid 5 hour rounds, or play twilight on cheap and just settle in and enjoy some good conversation between shots. I started playing this tired old Muny forty years ago. The front nine was too close together so that you have duffers hitting into other fairways and balls disappear. They did a redo several years ago but it is still same old same old. The pace of play is not a metric that concerns course managers. There were as many pull carts on the fairways as motorized. There are plenty of muddy spots and bare spots here at Brack. They do have an amazing starter here his name is Rudy. He's friendly and helpful. The greens are slow and bumpy. The front nine has too many deep sand traps blocking entire greens. There is nothing subtle about this punitive design. A tee shot n the middle of the fairway is penalized by a extra long and high carry to reach the green. In some cases the trap was GUR. This is the most expensive Muny in town and it's not worth it. Northern Hills and Cedar Creek are better values. The Quarry, Silverhorn, La Cantera, Republic and the Hyatt Hill Country are much nicer. read more

Veteran w ptsd and severe social anxiety disorder, was told I could play alone. 10 minutes before tee off they stuck me w 3 people and would not let me play alone. Man in club house said yea you can play alone, wasn't the case. Then when I wanted a refund they acted as if I was a burden to them. I'll never go here again. read more

this course is highly overpriced for what it offers. it's far from being a 'nice' course to play. it felt like a typical municipal course in california which i would have paid half of B's fees. those who were playing had no understanding of any golf's common courtesy. there were balls flying everywhere and i was scared in fear of getting hit by a stray, with no warning. the group behind us hit into us on more than one occasion and i don't think they felt bad about it at all. btw, i'm not joking....every time we got to our tee box, we saw a different group playing ahead of us. how does that happen and what does that tell you this course? the word 'ghetto' comes to mind. only good thing i can say about this course is that we were able to finish in 4 1/2 hours since it was so short. put this in perspective with a 7000+yd course, i'm sure it could have been 5 - 5 1/2 hour round for sure. my biggest beef was that i came down from austin to play this course. it was not worth my drive at all.....i could have paid half the price and played on a course 10x better. i was highly recommended to play this course which is whole seperate issue..... read more

Played in a tournament here - it was a nice course for a muni. Lots of sand though. The only bad part - sections are very close to 281 so if it's during a peak traffic time there might be some jack holes who things its funny to yell right as you are going to swing. I was locked in the bathroom at one point - thought I was going to die in there alone of heat stroke. read more

Very disappointed in the condition of the course. I played it back in 2013 and it was in pristine condition. Today it has started to revert back to the rundown condition of the 90s. Bunkers weren't raked prior to play by course staff, trash throughout area, some greens pitted and losing grass. Its a shame to see this historical gem go downhill. read more

My son and I love playing this course and it's one of the nicest courses in town for the price. The greens are always in great shape and the people that work there really do care about the course. I've been playing this course for over 20 years and remember the ordinal course, I think it's even better than the ordinal. Wonderful historic course near downtown San Antonio and the Pearl district. Very well maintained. Great fairways and greens. It's a little more challenging in the back nine with more water hazards to contend with. Great value for a wonderful course. It is certainly one of the top public courses in San Antonio area. There is no driving range hear. There is a putting green and a chipping area if you walk toward the #10th hole. read more
