Burying a loved one, especially when it's an unexpected passing, is so hard. It can be made even harder by the "business" mindset surrounding the burial of your loved one. I did not go to Rinker and Frye first, because I live in Winchester, VA. Local places made me feel like I was buying a used car. It felt impersonal and financially driven. Because of this, i buried my father without a headstone, hoping to rectify that later. That's when I found Rinker and Frye. They treated me with kindness and empathy, helping me to acquire a headstone that I didn't imagine I'd be able to afford, and I likely couldnt have afforded anywhere else. You could tell that their customers matter to them, and that they respect them enough to meet them where they are in the many stages of grief. I won't ever forget how they managed to leave me with a sense of peace as I closed an extremely painful chapter in my life. They never asked me to write a review, or refer their services to others, but instead put in the work and communication that makes them deserving of referrals. Rinker and Frye does business the way it's meant to be done. I'm so grateful to them, and I would vouch for their reputation and ethics above any other memorial service company in the entire Shenandoah Valley region.

I had a few conversations over the phone about what I wanted. The company doesn't have a web site but they can email pictures of stones. I made a trip to see the various types of headstones for myself. Certain red stones come from India. Other stones (the most popular ones) are grey. They have rough and smooth finishes. While a smooth finish might be easier to clean (and a bit more expensive), I chose it because it looked nicer. Gae, the co-owner was patient, detail oriented and thorough. She had a tape measure and showed me the size of several stones. It is much easier having a first hand look instead of trying to make a decision from a web site. You don't know what you don't know. It is a sad task so it is hard to even know all the questions to ask. There is a large booklet of headstones - photos & drawings. Most designs are completely flexible. If you don't like part of a design, you can change it. There are even symbols for the profession of your loved one (i.e. lawyer, doctor, teacher, etc). Mike, the owner helps create the designs on each tombstone. He followed in his father's footsteps. Each stone takes about 2-3 months to complete. Half of the payment is due when you order. The business has lists of phrases that can help family decide what to put on the tombstone. I am still thinking about what to submit. I appreciated being helped. I didn't feel pressured to add unnecessary things. There are lots of tombstones, types of materials and finishes. The vases that are for sale did not seem sturdy enough to use at the cemetery. It was helpful and practical that the owner already knew the cemetery and had a detailed map of every gravesite. He also knew exactly where my loved one was buried. I hope you don't need this service. Appointments aren't necessary. The owners keep an information sheet on your interest so that you aren't starting over when you visit. The hours are M-F 8-5pm.

Warren Hall is a one-stop shop for mail, snacks, studying, etc. This is where the student mailboxes are located, it's also where there is a shipping center and you can mail packages, box things up, buy stamps, etc. There are several hangout spots and it's also where several admin offices are located. It is attached to Taylor Hall and has Taylor Down Under where students can, and I did, hang out between classes, have some snacks, watch tv and shoot pool. In years past - there was a fancy steakhouse on the top floor which would take dining dollars the last few weeks of the semester so it was fun to dress up and spend that leftover $$$ at the last minute - not sure what it is now...
