It was established in 1861 across the road from the Mount Jackson General Hospital, operated by the Confederate Medical Department. It was dedicated on the third anniversary of Stonewall Jackson's death, May 10, 1866. During the war graves of the soldiers were marked with their names, units, and death dates. But after the war the graves were neglected, and by the time the United Daughters of the Confederacy erected the Monument To All Confederates in 1908, 112 had been lost. Today only three of the original 359 still stand: 1st Lieutenant Daniel C King, Company C, 16th North Carolina, died Jul 27 1863; Private John Hackett, Company E, 60th Georgia Infantry, died Aug 1 1863; and Solomon Shrader, Company C, 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry, died Aug 11 1863. However, all 408 soldiers have been identified and include the following numbers by State: Alabama 43, Florida 5, Georgia 87, Louisiana 10, Maryland 4, Mississippi 5, North Carolina 137, South Carolina 33, Tennessee 4, Texas 1, and Virginia 79. They are guarded by a statue of a Confederate soldier that was placed in the center of the cemetery by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1903. I used this funeral home when my dad passed away years ago. The name popped up just now, while I…read morewas searching for a headstone company. The initial visit was okay. The person I had the most contact with was the son of the owner. I didn't realize he was an alcoholic until the day of the service. Contracts were signed. Money was paid. Little things would happen - forgotten calls, details that were questionable. But we were grieving and just kept trying to move forward. I didn't want the funeral home handling the flowers since I had family members helping me. It's a personal touch. I communicated I did not need/want help. At the cemetery, the funeral home employee handed me all of the notes that accompany each flower arrangement. I'm not sure what possessed him to touch the flowers. Luckily, I had taken pictures of all the flower arrangements at the church. Otherwise it would have been a mystery who gifted us with each arrangement. When I made a phone call to the owner to share my disappointment in the handling of flowers and something from the day of the funeral, she was extremely unkind. The "death business" is gonna make money since families need to honor their loved ones. Professionalism, respect and kindness matter. It goes beyond profit. It's about human decency. No stars.

They and the funeral homes we've used have been helpful and considerate to our family. So my comments are more about what happens after the funeral. My grandparents (who died in the early 80s) have a marker with a bronze vase for flowers. My aunt and mother went there and discovered this. They talked to someone (name unknown) and the response was "well, there's nothing we can do about it." There have been other graves with their flower vase (made of bronze) stolen. Security must be poor and the only option was that my elderly aunt and mother spend more money for another vase which might be stolen again. This seems like pouring money down the drain if it gets stolen again.
