Again being back here I see a big difference in my kids. They always come home happy. They have great teachers there who are always willing to help out. First of all, this establishment claims that it "empowers students to be innovative and creative problem solvers." However, this statement completely contradicts what I went through. When I was a freshman in high school, I was placed into an honors math class and felt that I was prepared for the year ahead of me. This honors class was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken even though I had taken the exact same class in eighth grade. My math teacher would often say that "You guys have seen this before" or "You guys should know how to do this from middle school." I didn't. I had no idea what I was doing when I got to high school and felt incredibly behind from all of my peers. The fact that the subject I felt the least prepared in was math coming from a self-proclaimed "STEM Academy" was beyond me. I know my limitations and math was not it. I had all A's in math while attending this school. One of the biggest things I NEVER learned in Algebra I at IC was mean/median/mode. I remember that everyone of my peers in that freshman year Honors Algebra I class already knew this from middle school.

Her first day was rough because of the new environment, but after that, she loved this school. She gained confidence, her speech and vocabulary skyrocketed and her social skills improved tremendously. I'm so proud of her and am very grateful for the thoughtful and loving care all the teachers and staff show all the students. From the office manager, Luz, to the lunch team, to the nurse...everyone shows such empathy and care to all the kids. The principal, Erin Fish, is amazing! She really gets it! She very much understands and empathizes with all families who have special needs children and the challenges we face. She is a champion for all the students, whether in special ed or not. I applaud this school for being so exemplary in the way they have shaped the culture of the school and how they support all the students to strive to do their best and to learn from their mistakes and failures. The boys love etiquette class, gardening, and music class; they are learning how to play the recorder. The small class size ensures they don't "slip between the cracks" and are always held accountable for their actions. Since the school day is from 8am until 4pm and I feel confident that their academic education isn't being sacrificed. Another bonus is they have after school care until 6:30 and they do homework and chess class. We don't speak Mandarin at home and I am pleasantly shocked to hear them speak to each other (probably plotting something).

Diversity, diversity, diversity... Did we mention diversity? As an Asian American family, I wanted my daughter to be able to have a great amount of exposure to other cultures and not just ours. From personal experience of growing up with limited cultural exposure, I've often found myself in many awkward situations where I was clueless on what the social norm was... It eventually worked out but I want my daughter to be exposed earlier to a group of people different than what we offer at home so that she can learn. 2. The little town feel. Through my church we donate lunch to our school districts' teachers..... I mean, who does that anymore?! But I'm grateful Monrovia does and we're able to show our gratitude for the teachers. 3.
