The Community Arts Center is tucked away down a local street, and I was concerned that I was lost--thankfully not the case. I had a great visit. The building feels like a living, breathing tribute to art. There are multiple floors for hosting classes and events. There is a kiln for firing pottery on site. Even the grounds are beautiful, with lots of art and sculptures resting around the walkways outside. The Tea Bowl Exhibition was very well done. I bought a ticket for a Japanese tea demonstration, which was really interesting and enjoyable. I thought I'd be at the Arts Center for an hour, but I stayed much longer to check everything out. If I lived closer, I'd definitely look into taking classes here. For now, I look forward to my next visit for an event or exhibition.

I wanted to try something new out of the ordinary and found the right class in this place, ZENTANGLE. Marie (instructor) guides each student into different levels of awareness, meditating thru lines, figures and shades becoming a complete drawing. She begins with breathing exercises and leads you as soothing music is played in the background. The class is a couple of hours and trust you'll leave there relaxed and proud of yourself. You don't need to know how to draw or have any particular talent to getaway in your own piece of art. I give it 5stars because of Marie's unique techniques, close parking, picturesque campus, clean bathrooms, and ZENTANGLE's ballroom classroom in the 2nd floor is quite elegant, each corner says a story. Our tour consisted of the Blacksmith, Pond Life, Mill Tour, Miller's House and Hearth Cooking. I must admit I think the adults were a bit more intrigued by the program than the children. I specifically loved the Blacksmith demonstration. The gentleman showed us how tedious it was just to make a simple spoon and the amount of work that went into making items out of iron during this time frame. He explained that during this time 8-9 year olds would have been working on making nails and how important the Blacksmith was to the community. I would love to visit again and participate in learning more about the process. I not a bug lover so the Pond while the children thought it was cool to play in, I would pass. The Mill tour.. amazing the process of milling flour and the Miller's house displayed how the home would have been set up during the time period, including the brick oven. I also enjoyed the Hearth cooking.. the children learned how to make and "cook" cookies outside in a Hearth; the cookies actually tasted pretty good. Overall, I really enjoyed my time on the grounds. I look forward to returning and participating in another programs.

The Brandywine Festival of the Arts is a must for art lovers of all kinds. All over the park…read morevendors are stretched out in tented rows offering jewelry, paintings, carvings, you name it. All of the vendors I've encountered we're welcoming and eager to discuss their craft. One vendor I really enjoyed talking with was David Souza. His wood turnings, a medium I passionately adore, were utterly beautiful. There are some bowls there that I would love to have. For now I scooped up the cutest spinning top that was among an array displayed in all sorts of colors and patterns. The $5.00 admission is good for both days and entry to the zoo. So if you go home and decide you simply can't live without that exquisite hand turned wood bowl with lid well you can go back and get it (note to self). There is a food court were all the food trucks are set up and a large tented seating area or you could sit down by the creek and enjoy the view. The festival also has live music and a kids activity corner. The festival is dog friendly and vendors set out bowls of water in case Fido gets thirsty. Also noteworthy is the fact that they have shuttle buses. I just found this out after coming here three years. As a matter of fact people were boarding one as I was leaving. I don't know why I didn't inquire because there is quite a steep and long hill you MUST travel down to get to the grounds. By the time I scaled the hill back to my car I was a hot, exhausted, sweaty mess but overall an excellent experience.

Rose Tree Park is always a favorite in the summer. Their free shows run from June until mid-August…read morealthough they end the season too early in my opinion. Some shows such as the Billy Joel tribute are quite popular and fill up quickly. Bring low chairs or a blanket. You can also bring your own food and nonalcoholic beverages. They have a Rita's stand and I believe one other food stand. Parking is free and plentiful although you may have to walk a distance. Enjoy!

Last night we were driving by on our way home and saw the bright lights and decided to stop in. Wow this place is spectacular! So glad we parked the car and walked around. Business is lucky our child wasn't seriously hurt…read more With the weather being so cold, my wife and I were looking for an indoor place to take or 18 month old. We came across Bette's, as it's right down the road from our house. On arrival we were greeted by very friendly and helpful front desk staff as it was our first time coming. They recommended us the toddler town area and said it would be the best fit for his age. In the beginning he was really enjoying himself and loved exploring all the different activities in that area. Out of nowhere, children that were much older than toddlerhood (1-3 years old) - Came in and started playing really rough, sprinting into the bounce area of toddler town, no concern for younger kids in that space. As our child was trying to navigate that bounce area in toddler town, a boy who looked to be about 5-6 years old, that we didn't know, as well as having ZERO parent supervision at that time, grabbed our 18 month old, slammed him down and held him on the ground. The child thought this was funny and laughed, as our son was screaming and crying trying to get out of the hold. It was at this point that my wife and I leaned over and had to holler multiple times to get this kid to let go of out son. Staff in the area just stood there, less that 6 feet away, like nothing was happening. If the area is for a certain age range, children above that age range should not be playing in that area for this reason. Parents need to keep an eye on their children. There needs to be better care and concern for the younger kids. Pretty bummed about the whole experience as its really close to our home, heard such great things and aren't sure if we will return because of this. Hope this helps.

It looks like your going to an office building. There's a small sign on the front door with the name of the place but i'm telling you slow down or you'll be driving round and round trying to find what's right in front of you! By far the BEST indoor play spot on the planet! I thought i had been to some pretty good ones but this one tops them all! A lot of them make you pay for each adult but here you only have to pay for your children and it's only $9! You can't beat that for a place where you can stay as long as you want and bring your own food! Just a quick note that if you want to bring a cake you have to rent out party space. Other than that you can bring your own food or have food delivered. They even give you a free game card with a few credits on it to try out a game or two. You can then pay to load it at the kiosh to play more games. They have literally everything a child's heart desires here! Just check out the photos. There's a separate area for toddlers and smaller children. I loved that I saw staff walking the floor all throughout the day to keep things tidy. If I was a child you'd have to drag me out kicking and screaming because i'd never want to leave!

A Quaker owned retreat center outside of Philly …read more.. I came for a holistic nurses retreat for a four day session- also slept here for 3 nights. Our conference meeting center was at Brinton house - on one side of the campus. I also stayed overnight in Britton House as well . Some others stayed at Firbank on the other side of the campus near the main house Main house is where the meals are served There is a path that circles around the campus approximately a mile around that is nice to take . You can see key features like the Beech Tree, a tower, organic garden, wetlands etc Lots of lovely flowers , tree species and insects to see - like bees and butterflies. This place is great if you are into biology and studying trees etc . It's a nice retreat place . Quiet , peaceful and delicious organic food There are no TVs which is nice to detox . There is WiFi if you need to connect but I did a social media detox while I was there It is a scent free facility as well - no candles , perfumes , sprays etc Rooms or dorm style or you have a private room. Rooms are rustic and no frills but clean. They provide linens and towels . Pillows were very flat and bed can be at times uncomfortable. Yoga and stretching helped me . Although I liked my shared room with a private bathroom - the wood floor was noisy - made noise with every step. I saw others with carpet floor . But I liked the view from my room and the desk inside was nice. Meals were at set times Breakfast 730-830 Lunch 12-1pm Dinner 6-7pm They had chicken/poultry/ fish option as well As vegetarian and vegan and gluten free options Bug spray is needed for walks especially in summer - hot and humid days . They have an art room with small donations if you use the space There is a library but I didn't go They have an organic Garden and a small grass labyrinth I liked the wetland pond area near Brinton house - so pretty . The path is a wood chipped path for most of the path- some of it is gravel. Short version: it's like a contemplative year-round summer camp for grownups, only the food is…read morereally good. Insanely long version: Last month, after wrapping up a few very stressful months on a difficult job, I was at a sort of crossroads in my life. I was looking for somewhere to go where I could clear my head, relax, and spend a few days living simply and reflecting on what was really important to me. Some people might go camping at a time like this, but I don't have a tent or a sleeping bag, and it's cold out, and long periods of solitude don't really agree with me. Also I'm small and clumsy, and could not likely defend myself effectively against a bear. What to do? Somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered hearing about Pendle Hill. It's a Quaker retreat and study center, so I must have heard of it at some point while at my Quaker school. I looked at their website and decided to check it out for a couple of days-- not a huge investment at $75 a night. My two-night stay turned into a six-night stay, which turned into a decision to live at Pendle Hill for a ten-week term as a student. I am head-over-heels in love with this place. You might not have the time or the inclination to spend ten weeks there, but below is a list of reasons why you should come check it out for a day or two. (They also have all sorts of cool weekend workshops on topics related to mindfulness, social justice, racism, peace, etc., which would be an ideal way to become acquainted with Pendle Hill.) -The food. Maybe I shouldn't start with that, but this is Yelp, after all. And it's SO GOOD. There's an organic garden and a whole bunch of chickens on the grounds, and everything is as fresh as can be. They even make the bread from scratch. I was asked when I made my initial reservation whether I had any dietary restrictions, and when I arrived at dinner the chef introduced himself and showed me which items were dairy-, egg-, fish-, and wheat-free. -The people. The people and the food are linked closely in my mind, because mealtimes are a warm, communal affair. You serve yourself and then sit with others at one of a few little tables. Everyone there is incredibly nice to newcomers. I walked in to dinner with that anxious new-kid-in-the-school-cafeteria feeling, and walked out having made four or five cool new friends (ranging in age between about 25 and 75) who made me feel right at home. (I need a lot of human interaction to keep me happy, but it's just as easy to have a more solitary experience there if that's your thing.) -The art studio. It's so cool. It's open 24 hours a day, during some of which it is flooded with sunlight, and you can just go in and play! Or you can take one of their art classes. They've got all the tools and supplies you could imagine for drawing, painting, sketching, calligraphy, sewing, quilting, knitting, book-binding, pottery, and weaving, and I'm sure I've left out a bunch of things. There's also a wood shop that I hear is great, but my dust allergies kept me out of there. -The grounds. The campus is beautiful-- old stone buildings, a lovely path through the woods, the aforementioned organic garden, and all sorts of little quiet places to think-- wooden tucked away behind a stand of trees and the like. -The library and the bookstore (see my review of the latter). Tons of books, on Quakerism of course, but also on Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, and other religions; nature and ecology; social justice and activism; history; psychology; and on and on but this review is already way too long. The library is a beautiful place to sit and read or write. -The values. I'm almost hesitant sometimes to use the word "values" because it has been so coopted by the religious right, but I won't cede it to them. Quakers believe in simplicity, peace, and tolerance, among other things. You will find Jews, Catholics, Muslims, and Buddhists there; people of all sexual orientations; people who speak all different languages. Writers, readers, artists, musicians, social workers, activists, students, and people trying to figure out who and what they are, rake leaves and scrub pots together to keep the community running. Upon rereading this, I realize I might have made it-- and me-- sound rather cultish. It's not, and I'm not; I'm just still really excited. Come visit for a weekend to write or read or think or walk or be, and see for yourself.
