Choose somewhere else to stay in Kirksville! Update: Here's the response from the owner after three days, two phone calls, and four emails: "I never got a message from you by phone! As we discussed on the phone, our check in time is 5-7, and if you need a different time, we request that you set that up in advance. We waited and waited, and turned away other paying customers, as an e-mail is not an approved Cancelation. As a business we are unable to request your refund."

We had a family reunion dinner there, with an amazing fresh salad, hand squeezed lemonade, mashed potatoes, fresh garden picked green beans, chicken and homemade peach ice cream and chocolate cake. William took us out for a hayride and was kind enough to show us their home and beautiful gardens. They'll be moving to Kansas when they sell the place, but I hope they'll find someone else to keep on with the wonderful start they've made.

The innkeeper was kind and welcoming, but also gave us space...breakfast was plentiful--eggs, sausage, toast, and coffee. They do take special dietary requests, and asked us about that when we arrived... Our room (we stayed in the main house) was decorated with antiques and wonderful old quilts, and faced the iron wagon bridge spanning the Des Moines River...we walked back and forth across this bridge several times. Next to the inn are several interesting shops with varying hours of operation...the general store was fun to browse through, and sells awesome homemade fudge. We did not have an in-room refrigerator, and didn't expect one but would recommend bringing a small cooler if wanting to keep drinks or food cold for more than a few hours (I did notice a mini fridge in the dining room)....also, most of the toiletries are provided upon request only. The inn has a colorful past which was fun to read about. If wanting a peaceful and interesting getaway I'd highly recommend staying here!
