It, continues into the lobby with live televised coverage of local rail activities, gies down the hallways where memorabilia crowds inset shelves, and into the rooms with train photographs and illustrations. Staff were friendly, helpful, and engaging A well-kept,modern playground is available for children, and bicycles are ready and free for families or individuals. A Mexican restaurant and a convenience store are within walking distance across the parking lot. Was traveling to see my Elderly Mother that suffered 7 Strokes and heart attack.. Only motel in town and was close to her home,, Looked nice and decent.. Snow storm of the century came through couldnt travel.. it was literally 60 mph winds and 52 inches of snow made travel impossible.. verify if im telling the truth 3/13-3/16 2026 Upper Michigan all the way around.. Asked for refund or reschedule ..Denied nope .. asked for voucher for following week.. nope denied.. I begged .. needed to see my mother before i cant.. and they care more about stealing revenue then people or their business.. Negative - five star for selfishness. read more

We had a wonderful stop at La Plata, Missouri and stayed at the Depot Inn and Suites. We took Amtrak's Southwest Chief on our return from Walt Disney World to our homes in Southern California. We really appreciated the rail museum that is located throughout lobby and hallways. There was a forecasted snowfall for the day we arrived so we had called the hotel the day before to get an idea of the road conditions, as we had planned to rent a car and go to Marceline, Missouri to visit the Walt Disney Hometown Museum. Ceema, the co-owner, was very helpful. The visit turned out very well and we managed driving in the snow just fine. It's very welcoming hotel and the staff is outstanding. We really appreciate it getting a ride to and from the train station. read more

Excellent service at the Train Depot Inn! This small town does not have much to offer but I do have to say this hotel is at the top of the list of its finer things and a must see if driving or stopping here. They have a free continental breakfast, indoor pool, outdoor seating area and neat train stuff located throughout the hotel. We stayed in one of the suites which was really neat. They had two TVs, one had cable and the other had live cameras of the train track which was really different! I found myself watching that more than the television! Nice soaker jet tub, small fridge and fireplace. The owner and staff were helpful and warm. Neat getaway for a night. read more

I stayed here one night (10/20) for the La Plata Railroad Days. This is a really quaint hotel. For the quality of the rooms and the hotel itself, it actually is quite reasonably priced, especially for someone coming from the CA area. There is train memorabilia all around the hotel itself. Even the rooms have a train theme. The owners are really nice and go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible. They provide a free continental breakfast in the morning for residents of the inn. There is a nice pool (didn't have time to use), and they also pick you up and drop you off at the Amtrak depot (I came by train and left by train). If I ever come back here again, I will stay here again. The price is so reasonable for all you get. The only negative I had, was that the internet wasn't really that strong and kept dropping out. read more

Fun! If you like trains at all, you will love this place. When you walk in the reception area is a library or a museum and a great and comfortable place to hang out. Stroll down the hallway and look through the artifacts on display, it's very enjoyable. We stayed in a suite, which I can recommend to you, we spent the evening enjoying the view of the train station from our own TV monitor, with a fireplace and hot tub. They have a pool too along with a light, but adequate breakfast. Service was attentive and friendly. Highly recommended! read more

What a delightful surprise! We felt so welcomed and blessed by our visit to the Depot Inn! The absolutely beautiful craftsmanship if the lobby, combined with the fascinating decor and memorabilia was even better in person. The owners themselves greeted us and invited us! What wonderful people! I'd never been to this part of Missouri before, but surely would want to visit here again after making their acquaintance. We traveled on the hotel's tram to the train depot and watched a train roll by. It was fascinating! It really was! The view from above the tracks was so much fun to experience. ...Even, kind of romantic! Afterwards we dined at a nearby restaurant that was recommended by our hosts. Delicious! Our room was decorated with details that reminded us of a more elegant era. Beautiful rich colors. Luxurious tile, wood trims and brilliant craftsmanship throughout! Seriously! This is a very uniquely appointed hotel! The king bed was not only a beautiful design, but exceptionally comfortable as well. The shower was perfect too! Even the fluffy towels and soft linens were well beyond our expectations. In the morning we were able to enjoy a lovely complimentary breakfast in the beautiful lobby before we went on our way. We were anxious to get home to Alabama - but felt like we'd made some new friends right here in the middle of our great country. Thank you for making our stay so splendid. Here from Chicago for family weekend at Truman State University 9/20 - 9/22 visiting our son who's a freshman on the football team - Go Bulldogs! All hotels in the immediate vicinity of Truman were sold out and fortunate for us Depot Inn & Suites had a room available! Before we even arrived I had a few questions and spoke with staff over the phone who were extremely helpful and super pleasant. I actually called a few times and apologized for the "harassment" on my end but they didn't seem bothered by it at all. From the moment we arrived we were met with beautiful train themed decor and the warmest, friendliest welcome. We were given a few logistics and keys, not cards to our room. Nice touch! The room was cozy, comfortable and most importantly CLEAN! It felt like we had walked into a room in our home. We slept like babies! I cannot say enough wonderful things about our stay; the warm and friendly staff, nostalgic train themed decor and super comfortable accommodations, you EXCEEDED our expectations! It is worth the extra drive to the University. So glad all the other rooms were sold out as we probably would have never experienced Depot Inn. If you are traveling anywhere near NE Missouri and need a hotel, do not miss out on an opportunity to stay at the Depot Inn and Suites. This is my third stay and compared to the big corporate chains (Marriott, IHG, etc), this hotel is a huge breath of fresh air. Part hotel, part B&B and part railroad history museum, this beautiful, quaint location is a must! The owner is a fascinating, pleasant and conversive gentleman. He will take time out to sit and chat. He's not from the community but clearly has learned so much about it. LaPlata is a small town, but the Amtrak railway and station are huge draws for cross country travelers and train aficionados. Just up the road a few miles is Kirksville, home of Osteopathic medicine (which also has a great museum!). Travel 15 miles south and you can eat at the Pear Tree which has a great menu and is a phenomenal dining experience. But, back to the Depot Inn and Suites. There are 26 standard type rooms. But don't let the word "standard" fool you. They are far more comfortable and cozier than about any big chain hotel offers. The themed rooms offer large suites, jacuzzi tubs and fireplaces for a wonderful ambiance. Add to this a clean, well-kept pool area, outside picnic tables and a very well-done continental breakfast and you have the makings for a great travel experience. Finally, even if you aren't a railroad buff, at the very least, you can't help but be intrigued by a solid taste of Americana that lines the halls and adorns the walls of the entire facility. Oh! And they have pet-friendly rooms too! Put this place on your must-stay-when-traveling list! You will be glad that you did! read more

The Depot Inn offers a cozy stay at an affordable price. It is easy to see that it is very well cared for by the incredibly amicable owners who are always around if you need them. It has themed suites that are honestly surprisingly well appointed and would be worth the stay just for the kitsch even if they weren't. There's an indoor pool, billiards, and tons of interesting railroad memorabilia throughout. Oasis on the prairie, Victorian Suite in the quiet section of this little gem. Playground for the kids (thankfully, there were none on this quiet weekend). Did I mention this was a quiet stop? We were here for two nights, and will stay here next time we visit family, even if it is a little bit of a drive. And we will definitely get one of the spacious suites. My wife and I visited alone the first time (stayed in the Victorian suite) and the second time we took our son (stayed in the western suite). Our son was so shocked he loved all the train memorabilia, the pool, the hot tub in our room. The whole experience was magnificent! Incredible! I'm driving from Columbus Ohio to San Francisco for work. Traveling across the country in a 20 Foot Truck, towing a Ford Fusion with a faithful companion. My Siberian Husky, Ares. Justin my copilot is going as well, he's helping me move. We had traveled around 600 miles and was ready to call it a night. I checked AirB&B looking for a cheap house to crash at the night and every place was booked. After checking several city's along our route we came across the Depot Inn and I was immediately fascinated. My best friend is a Conductor for the railroad so I wanted to check it out. We arrived around 11 at night and the lady checking us in was extremely professional and polite. She commented how beautiful my Husky was and pet him. She gave us our keys and explained how breakfast works and we went to our room. Walking down the hallway was truly memorizing. It feels as if you're in a railroad museum. It was so awesome. Their pool was so unique with the decor as well and the giant model train engaged in glass separating the lobby and pool was fascinating. When we arrived To our room it was beautiful as well. The beds were comfortable and I fell a sleep immediately. The following morning I met the owners while walking my Husky and we bonded while his wife was giggling at my Husky speaking to her and her husband and I spoke about my travel. He actually lived in Ohio for a while and in California. He was a very friendly gentlemen and made me feel welcomed. He helped me with my breakfast as they had a selection of cereal; fruits, doughnuts, bagels and making your own waffles. I don't know if I'll ever come through Missouri again but if I do, I'd stay here in a heartbeat. Loved every minute of it. Pros; beautiful decor. Staff is super friendly including the owners. Went above end beyond to make the stay remarkable. Pet friendly! Rooms are large and comfortable beds. Giant pool. Parking was spacious. Cons; TVs could be a tad larger in the room. Room was humid when we arrived. Once the air ran for a bit it was refreshing cozy. I would of loved some sausage and eggs for breakfast haha. read more

This is my third stay at this hotel and it never fails to please. To start, it's clean! When we walked in the side door to go to our room, the first thing I noticed was how good it smelled. Great Place to stay with or without Kids! We have been coming here for the last 5 years, and we look forward to it every year. We have stayed in the Suite , and loved it! Also in just a regular room , and loved it as well. Super clean (I've been in other more expensive places that were nasty , this place tops anywhere) Great customer service, friendly, comfortable cute , nice clean, rooms, extra helpful staff, pool is super nice! They even have pool toys and life jackets, and a swing set . Saw the cleaning lady on her hands and knees scrubbing a room! I was IMPRESSED!!! Spic and span place, and highly recommended instead of anything in Kirksville, or surrounding areas. They go above and beyond to make sure you are happy and taken care of.
