If you are having issues with Covered California, or if you have any insurance questions and/or issues at all, look no further - - you've just found your superheroes of the insurance world. I spoke with Bonnie and I am still in disbelief about what she did for me in such a short phone conversation. She is truly wonderful. For months, I have been trying to navigate the woes of Covered California on my own. First, there was the whole subsidy qualification process. I tried to convey to them in multiple ways that last year's salary was irrelevant since what I'm earning now doesn't even come close. As a new professional trying to build a practice while doing consulting work on the side, my earnings are completely erratic. Finally, I managed to get approved for a subsidy (skipping lots of details here about the back and forth and the sudden and unexpected bill for 3x the price that I was originally approved for). Naturally, I chose the Anthem Platinum PPO plan because it looked just like the plan I had at my previous job. Then, I learned that there are virtually no providers who accept Covered California Anthem plans. I eventually had to go to the ER, and they wanted to admit me. I refused to be admitted because I had no one to take care of my diabetic dog at home. I asked for a prescription so that I could deal with my medical issue at home. They refused and gave me the following options : 1. Admittance to the hospital 2. I could go to Valley Medical or the Indian Health Center as they are the only known entities, says O'Connor, who will take my crappy (??) insurance. Shocking and really upsetting. If you Google Anthem and Covered CA, there are lots of news stories about this. It is a huge mess, and devastating to many. I made one quick phone call this afternoon. I expected nothing...I found a miracle! My COBRA coverage ends at the end of the month so I needed to get new coverage for me and my family. I thought I was educated on the new Obamacare plans but it turns out I had made some very wrong assumptions. Steve was fantastic about explaining how the plans worked (my wrong assumptions were about total out of pocket costs for out of network providers). If I hadn't gone with him I would have ended up with healthcare that was practically useless for us. He made sure we got on a plan that had our doctors as part of the "in-network". I, of course, waited until the very last day to make my decision but Steve was able to get the application filed and get us signed up so there won't be any lapse in coverage. This review is for the assistance I got from Brauer Insurance to switch from my employer plan to a *gasp* ACA plan. How I've grown to hate health care and the out of control costs just the have the insurance. Fortunately I was able to get a plan with a cheaper monthly premium - albeit with a much higher deductible but if you don't go to the doctor much then you don't need the higher premiums. The process was really easy and I didn't need to worry about navigating the web myself to find something. Steve also has insight on which companies his current clients have had problems with and which ones are less problematic and that helps.
