My dentist referred me to this office for a root canal. I called to make a consultation appointment thinking it'll be in weeks but Gabby got me in next day. And she sent me a link to fill out forms at my leisure at home instead of a clipboard in the office. The consultation was no surprise, I needed a root canal. Again thinking weeks away, they scheduled me next day. Dr Smolkin did the procedure. Not a very talkative fellow but then he was rather busy. I'll take less talking for next day service any time. So Jackie and Gabby helped me out at the front desk and were friendly and efficient. Good people you'd enjoy talking to if they didn't have to work. Lol I'm transitioning to Medicare within the month and my dentist doesn't accept it but this office does. So I will be coming here for cleanings and such soon. read more

Went here for my routine exam with a concern for possible gingivitis. Once the exam was complete, I was told I had severe gum disease and would require some type of laser cleaning because of how bad it was. After my insurance coverage I was told I would pay $600 out-of-pocket. Soon after I discovered I was pregnant so did not go back to get the laser cleaning done. The health of my gums was a huge concern during my pregnancy since pregnancies are already tough on one's teeth. After my pregnancy, I decided to go to another dentist for a second opinion on the health of my gums. They told me my teeth and gums were in excellent health and just really needed a good cleaning. My cleaning was done by the new dentist and my teeth and gums fill amazing again. This place is not what it used to be. It is very money driven now and it's disappointing. I have now changed my primary dental office to the new dentist who is able to take care of me without needing a $600 laser cleaning. It feels like they took my concern and tried to profit off of it as much as they could. read more

I'm a new pacient for the office. 6/12/26 I called the office to get an appointment, the receptionist gave me the appointment of 6/26/26 11:00 am, and let me notice my dental insurance that I will use the facility. At the same date, I set the facility as my primary care onlinely. The webpage shown me that starts from 6/1/26 I can use the facility. However, today (6/26) when I visited the office, the front receptionists said that they don't have my appointment. I asked them check their phone records, they said their phone system is old and does not have; I asked to check with the person who answered my phone on 6/12, they did not response me; I asked giving me a reason, they only said "I don't know". The receptionists are very indifferent, lack of professional responsibility. Should give 0 star! read more

I had a really bad experience here that just felt dishonest. It's hard to know for sure, but things just didn't make sense. I have a dental HMO and this office is in-network. They started by giving me a full set of x-rays. Afterwards, the dentist came in and had a consultation with me, but I'm not sure if he even looked at my x-rays since we didn't go over them at all. He just looked in my mouth and said I didn't have any cavities and asked if I brush on a particular side too hard. During this time, I told him I was considering getting a new mouthguard and to possibly do some more gingival grafting (both things that I have gotten in the past). I also asked him for a preauthorization for the mouthguard so I can be sure I'm getting charged correctly. He said someone would speak to me about the mouthguard and also get me a referral for the gingival grafting so I can see a periodontist since they don't have one on-site. This is when the bad experience started. I was seen by Jackie (I think their "financial" person) to go over my preauthorization. I was told that a mouthguard would cost me over $400. Prior to my visit, I called my insurance company to make sure I knew what would be my copay for a mouthguard, which is $85. I told Jackie this and pulled out my benefit books with all the dental coverage codes and showed her my copay with my insurance plan. I also asked her what dental code she would be using (the insurance company advised me to do this), but she couldn't answer that. At this point, she seemed a little surprised that I had my dental code book with me and said that the one that is $400 is "special" in that it's made of better material. I told her that I didn't want a "special" mouthguard since my current one has lasted me over 20 years. After complaining some more since she wouldn't do a preauthorization, she said that I would have to speak to their Office Manager (Debbi). It was more than an hour of waiting around, and I still hadn't started my cleaning. We only did the x-rays and a very brief consultation with the on-site dentist. Eventually, they came back and said I could get my cleaning with the dentist. I asked where is the dental hygienist since I prefer to have my cleanings by them. I mean, that's basically what dental hygienists do all day and it's even in their title. Now, I understand a dentist can also do this, but I'm guessing most dentists prefer not to do this and will very likely do a less than thorough job since it's a little "beneath" them. Also, in my experience, any office that doesn't have a staff of dental hygienists isn't a good dental office since most dentists don't want to be doing that type of work. Anyway, after the bad experience with the "financial" person and not feeling comfortable getting my teeth cleaned by the dentist who might try to upsell more things to me, I told them I would rather just stop the appointment and possibly come back when the dental hygienist was available (I was really just trying to be polite and get out of there without causing a scene). After my appointment, I called my dental insurance to get guidance on my bad experience and how I could file a grievance. The following Monday, before I filed the grievance, I decided to call their Office Manager (Debbi) to get clarification on the cost of the mouthguard and to see if they would do the preauthorization. This time, she told me that I could get a preauthorization, but the dentist would need to see my old mouthguard to make sure it's not repairable. This mouthguard was over 20 years old and molded from another dentist. It sounded like they didn't want to do the preauthorization, so I called my dental insurance again and asked if this mouthguard repairs was standard practice, which they said it wasn't and I am allowed a new nightguard under my benefits every 3 years with an $85 copay. I called Brea Dental again to relay this information. When I called, I asked to speak to Debbi but she was busy and Jackie answered, so I had a "heated" exchange with her since she wouldn't listen to what I was explaining regarding my prior conversation with my insurance. In the end, they called me back the next day and said they would drop me as a client. In reality, there was no way I was going back there, but I wanted to see if they would be honest and honor my HMO insurance. I also did file a formal grievance with my insurance company about them. This dentist has another office in Laguna Beach and if you read the Yelp reviews there, you can see another review have a somewhat similar experience as me. If you do go to this dentist, or any other dentist, always have your benefit book available with the dental codes, and always ask for a preauthorization for any work beforehand, so you know what is your out-of-pocket costs. From my experience, dental insurance companies are usually pretty good about helping you so you won't get ripped off. If you feel you are getting ripped off, file a grievance. read more

I made my first appointment to have my teeth cleaned. I arrived on time and gave them my insurance card. They took me back and started taking all kinds of xrays. Normal xrays, rotary xrays and some type of hand held device. Twenty minutes of xrays. Then I sat there while they examined the xrays. Then Peterson comes in and tells me that I need all kinds of work done. I said I just want my teeth cleaned. Peterson said he won't clean my teeth until after I have all his work done! Great staff and good care. Always a pleasure and that can be hard to say with getting your teeth worked on.

We got Invisalign done with Brea Dental who was recommended by our friend. Although, the treatment itself wasn't a problem, it was an okay experience overall. They did what needs done staying very professional about it. The only qualm, availability of the Invisalign doctor. He is available for follow ups only on Thursdays. Each time we made appointments, the high school schedules made it challenging to keep up with no flexibility of other days or weekends what so ever. The treatment which was suppose to last a year went on way over. They were happy to accommodate us with next availability always but the fact that it has to be a Thursday made it really tough to get our ducks aligned to make it to the appointment each time. I wish, I realized this before I started the journey, hence writing this review for anyone who is considering this place. The service was as good as any other place is my opinion. read more

PATIENT BE WARE IF YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE ELSE Please do !!! I went in for a routine visit on 07/23 .. during which I was diagnosed with fillings. I proceeded with the fillings. During the process the doctor was working very quickly. Little regard to detail or my personal comfort. I left and paid for the procedure. When I arrived to my car I noticed two distinct red spots on my face. I was heavily anestesie. It wasn't until after hours later that I felt a distinct burning sensation on my check. I looked in the mirror the DENTIST had BURNT my face. I called back immediately only to find that there's no emergency line. I sent an email indicating the burns that had been found on face. Today 7/26 I was asked to come back in by Debby. I went back in so the dentist could looked at my face. First he made me wait 20 minutes before seeing me. Second he came in looked at me and said that most likely it was a pimple or maybe an allergic reaction. Mind you I have been through five years of orthodontics had multiple dental procedures and never had an issue. Instead he told me to go to a dermatologist and pay out of pocket for additional expenses. There was zero remorse not even an apology. I told him that I had reached out to an attorney at which point he rolled his eyes at me. He was most concern but covering his own ass than even considering the fact that he had down harm to someone else. To end the conversation I told him "I came here I trusted you and you burnt my face" he just walked out of the room. IF YOU CAN ANYWHERE ELSE PLEASE DO.. please see all the pictures of the clear burns on my face. I've been going to Brea Dental for 2 years now - before Monday I would've given them 5 stars - but after dealing with the lady at the front desk regarding my insurance - I have to take the stars to 3 - love the dentist, love my new hygienist - not a fan of the the front desk - very unsympathetic and helpful. I understand that maybe my insurance (ppo Aetna) maybe not be able to handle my needs but there's a better way to deliver that. I got fillings done on 4/16 and I am still experiencing pain on the tooth that I had gone for and the other fillings they claimed I needed. The fillings are so poorly done, you can feel it and I've had chips since I've gotten them done. Just felt dishonest and they are just money hungry. I really thought Dr. Peterson would be my new dentist. I liked him. I went to him with a poorly done crown that had been bothering me for a few years. Food got stuck in it and irritated the surrounding tissue. I liked the new $900 crown I got there. The assistant who glued it on asked how it felt, and it seemed okay, but it was not checked for proper fit. Turns out it was hitting the tooth above it, and over the weekend I started having excruciating pain. The tooth had cracked! So not only did I lose my tooth and the new $900 crown, I had to pay for extraction, and can look forward to paying thousands of dollars for an implant. This could have been prevented if the new crown was checked for proper height. I'm so disappointed and feel violated to loose a tooth! read more

So I have always hated the dentist. And for over 18 years I've been getting all my dental and medical through the military and the VA. Safe to say I wasn't the biggest fan of dental work through them. This was one of my first times going to a civilian dentist for a cleaning and gum treatment. My hygienist l, Cindy, was awesome. Avoid this place at all costs. I went here on 11/9/2023 after moving to the area. Dr. Peterson did a deep cleaning and 4 fillings. Immediately after, I had severe pain in one of the teeth that he did a filling on. I thought it was the deep cleaning, so I waited. When it didn't go away, I went back on 12/5/2023. Another dentist in the practice informed me that I now needed a root canal on the same tooth he just did a filling on. And they wanted to charge me around $1400 for it. Prior to my 11/9 appointment, I had no pain and definitely did not need a root canal. Obviously I was not going to allow them to touch my teeth again. Instead I went to my husband's dentist of 20 years the following day, 12/6/23. He let me know that the fillings that Dr. Peterson were done so poorly that not only did I need a root canal, but all of the work Dr. Peterson did would need to be redone. The filling done caused the need for a root canal. I am now going to be out over $1500 due to Dr. Peterson's dereliction of duty. I will not be returning. I have also filed a complaint with the Dental Board of California. Message to his office - you do not have my permission to share any personal information as a response to this review or in any other form. Doing so will result in further complaints with the Dental Board as well as a report to the US Department of Health and Human Resources for violating HIPAA. read more
