When you walked in the air is filled with the spell of delicious bread. Music playing in the background adding to the ambience of the bread displayed.

So, recently a friend of mine wanted to check this place out to get some kind of special Korean bread for his wife's birthday. I decided to tag along and check it out. As other reviews have mentioned, it's not screaming for you to come inside - there's no real signage and they've got dark windows. You wouldn't even know it was there. Honestly, felt kind of like a mob-front, knock with the password kind of situation and you could only get in if someone vouched for you and gave you the secret location. LOL Anyway, when you get inside it's just loads and loads of baked goodness! I decided to try the cream cheese muffin and the melon bread. Both were SO delicious, and filling! I only ate half the muffin the day we went, and then was able to reheat the others a bit over the next couple days for breakfast. I'll definitely swing back when I'm in the area to pick up a few treats. We went VERY early, like right when they opened, because my friend said they will often sell out. I guess they only make a limited quantity and when it's gone, it's gone. So plan accordingly!

So this is where you find the Asian bakery in CoVA! REALLY tucked away in Newport News, very unassuming even without its name as signage - just says Bakery on the outside. But boy when you open that door you get transported into the typical bakery that had all the stuffing - from butter cream to chestnut cream to pizza toppings to red beans to chocolate... joes on and on. Then in the display case you have the birthday cake made from light fluffy buttery batter and definitely not uber sluggishly sugar frosting typical of grocery sheet cakes. There are also the different flavored jelly rolls - strawberry, matcha, mango, etc. Will definitely drop by Bread Garden whenever I go on that long therapeutic drive to Newport News!

This place is AMAZING and they never disappoint. I come in any chance I get. Saturday mornings generally have the best selection . I can't rave about this place enough. The bread is fresh, soft and melts in your mouth. They have so many different options, but my favorite to date is the walnut cream cheese. They offer savory and sweet pastry options, so they have something for everyone.

OMG. I have long been wanting to come here, and I finally did, and now I'm obsessed! I came here on an early Saturday while I had to be in Hampton. I decided since I was up that way, I'd drop in. Boy am I glad I did!! Although I don't recommend doing so on an empty stomach! First, the workers are super friendly and helpful. I literally wanted to try it all and I bought an embarrassingly large amount of pastries, which my family helped devour. I had already bought their castella cake and red bean pastry at Chesapeake's EMart where they deliver on Thursday mornings. However, the bakery has far more options and deliciousness! I'm not a big fan of cream and custard filled pastries, but did try their cream puff and it was delicious! But the real winner and surprise, was the amazing curry bread!! I was so mad I didn't buy like 10 of these! These are so savory and delicious with a nice spicy kick. I could eat these every morning! I think it was all veggie curry, and I instantly regretted letting my husband have the 2nd one I bought. Note: I just found out they have curry bread only on Saturdays in the store. Best to get there early if you are looking for them too. I'm sure they go quickly. :) Other highlights were the twisted donut like pastries and the kimbap! They also make adorable animal cakes with enough notice, and offer a small area to sit and a keurig coffee maker you can buy a cup. For what it was, I thought maybe $2-3 for the cup was a little much, but I actually discovered I like the Green Mountain Hazlenut they offer, when I normally hate keurig pods because they taste sort of "chemical-like". This one did not, and now I buy it for our home keurig which I never used, and now my husband has to share it. Lol. Anyways, I love the fact they have literal baskets for shopping. And if you get there early enough like I did (9:30'ish?), the pastries are just coming out and still warm! They have other delicious savory pastries like hot dogs, pizza, and some cookies! For me, I'm sticking with my favorites! Please don't take all the curry bread though, now that I shared my favorite! :)

The selection of items during my visit. See empty spaces? That's from items that were sold!

This was my first time here and it definitely won't be the last. I've had their products before from Emart in Virginia Beach. I wanted to visit their store when I knew I would be in Newport News. So glad I came by. They have a vast selection of yummy pastries, made fresh. I couldn't even tell you what I specifically bought. I basically just put stuff in my basket. I already have eaten a few by the time of this writing and am absolutely blown away by the quality of every product so far. Every item I ate was moist and soft, just the right amount of sweet, and not heavy for the stomach. I definitely recommend a visit here whether you live in Newport News or elsewhere!

Bread Garden is a must-stop if you are in the area. I go here very frequently and will continue to buy from them. The quality has always been beyond excellent and the service is great. The baked goods are also incredibly authentic. My family walked into Bread Garden for the first time probably about a decade ago not knowing what to expect. The outside of the place is not eye-catching to say the least with the overall location, the minimal signage on until you walk up to the door, and the fact that you cannot see into the building due to the blinds. We were amazed by the quality and variety of baked good right off the bat and have been loyal customers ever since. Bread Garden is one of those local hidden gems and they have an excellent reputation. You can also find their baked good around various grocery stores in the area such as the Farm Fresh and at the E-Mart next door. For breads, I like the regular cream cheese and walnut cream cheese flavors the most at the moment, but they have plenty others that I love such as the pea paste, red bean paste, red bean with butter cream, white bean paste, and so forth. The variety is quite vast and I obviously have not mentioned everything within their selection. For example, they have more sweet stuff such as red bean donuts, fried sweet balls filled with red bean paste, cupcakes, macarons, cookies of sorts, and so forth. I also enjoy their roll cakes, which are filled with butter cream that is not overly sweet unlike plenty of American grocery store desserts. They have four flavors which are strawberry, mocha, green tea, and vanilla. Likewise, there are also savory offerings such as hot dog rolls, croquettes, gimbap, curry bread, and so forth. There is also a fantastic mammoth roll that is layered with ingredients such as butter cream, pea paste, jelly, red bean paste, and so forth. I think they only sell two per day, so you may have to come early to get this, but it is worth a try at least once. You can get various cakes made custom and they are an adorable treat for a special occasion or if you want a darn great cake. Just let them know in advance and they will produce a cute and delicious product for you. Sorabol, the Korean restaurant next door, is also worth a stop. I often go to Bread Garden after a mean at Sorabol for a little dessert. Anyway, if you are thinking about giving Bread Garden a try, go for it. You may become addicted, though.

I'm a bread lover, and let me tell you, this Asian bakery is the best out there. I didn't realize there was a good one in the area! Very tucked away, kind of seems lame on the outside, but trust me and go inside. There's so many different things to choose from, so fresh, and just tastes sooo good. The guy helping me was very nice! Will definitely be back, OFTEN!

Mocha cream bread

Just.. yes. You won't regret it! So soft, so chewy, so goooood!!! Everything is a 10/10.

I recently discovered that Bread Garden was open to the public! Say what?! I've only ever found Bread Garden's items (BG) at Grand Mart or Emart. When we lived here the first time around, I always thought it was a wholesale bakery, so I picked up my BG goods at the local Korean grocery store. When I was in NN last month, I decided to make a detour and visit BG. It's located next to the E Mart with a simple sign indicating "ppang" in Hangul characters meaning bread, similar to what you would actually see in Korea and the word "Bakery", so DO NOT look for a "Bread Garden" sign on the building, it's indicated on decals stuck on the windows. Also, the windows will not lure you in with a sneak peek of the deliciousness you will find inside. The blinds are shut, so you almost feel like you've discovered this secret gem once you go inside. Located right next door to Emart and Sorabol in NN, it's a small store, but you will find 2 aisles of counters packed with baskets of carb loaded delights! - The Goods - My haul included: Gimbap - fresh, approx 12 rolls, well priced. Great snack/lunch, depending on how much you can eat LOL Castella - this sponge cake is oval in shape and is about the size of your hand Twist donuts - coated in sugar Bread with peanut butter crumb topping - this is basically a bread, little drier than a Hawaiian roll, topped with this delicious crumb that is peanut butter based baked on it. Another one of my faves since I was a child. Cream Loaf - Picture a Hawaiian Roll bread loaf split in the middle piped with a very light buttercream, but not as sweet and not as thick, kinda like the fluffiness of Cool Whip, but waaaaaay better tasting. Almond Cookies - little thumbprint size with an almond in the middle Fried Dduk (mochi) ball - Soooooo good! It's basically a mochi ball, fried stuffed with sweet red bean paste. Chewy, slightly greasy and perfect amount of sweet! BG makes my Korean heart and stomach SO happy. The only bummer is that it is pretty far from my home, but maybe it's a blessing in disguise for my hips. I will definitely go to BG every chance I get whenever I'm in NN. - Heads Up - *Go early. They only make a certain amount for the day, so once it's out, it's gone. Quite a few baskets were empty during my visit. *If you can't make it up to NN, like I mentioned, you can find it at Grand Mart and E Mart. *They also have a glass showcase with cute little animal cakes. See pics Stay safe, Friends!

Kimbap, melon bread, almond tuile
Chanel T.

This is my first time here, I've come to Emart many times but never stopped into the bakery next door. I got the melon bread and almond tuile and kimbap to try. The almond tuile was nice and crispy and not overly sweet. The melon bread was pillowy soft, I really couldn't taste melon flavor but the bread was still very good and you can tell it was fresh made. The kimbap was good also, I was impressed with everything I tried. They have many options to try I will definitely come back to try their other pastries and cookies and cakes

In moderation of course ;) It is literally a cornucopia of thanksgiving desserts. The hubs and I are not in Smithfield often, as it's close to an hour drive from where we are. We found this place when visiting an annual fall vintage antique market where they had a booth. Yes..... I had to control my eyes and stomach. Eating with your eyes is a thing! My better half decided on the lemon blueberry loaf, and I on the hummingbird slice of cake. It's a banana pecan cake with cream cheese frosting. Soo the result was...... it was both slightly dry not as moist. The blueberries in the lemon loaf all sank to the bottom. As for the loaf it was mid soft to hard to swallow. The lemon frosting on top was very good. The hummingbird slice had a nice amount of pecans with the taste of banana, but I also experienced the cake to be dry, even with the recommendation of eating it at room temperature. It was refrigerated, so cold air tends to draw out moisture and dehydrate the cake. They have display cakes, so you do have to ask them for slices, which they will retrieve from the fridge. Overall, it was still good and we would be back to try their cookies and bars! I believe they have some savory focaccia!!!!

They are located next door to Lormnava Afrik Cuisine. Female-owned and black-owned....two huge pluses in my book. Upon entering, we were greeted by the hostess behind the counter. They have side seating but it's mainly a takeout spot, which is completely fine with us. You can also smell food from the back once you enter. Truly a great presence for fans of sweet treats. I ordered a cinnamon roll stuffed with caramel apple. One lady ahead of us ordered the same thing I picked for someone else. But once she opened up her case and smelled the goodness, she was like 'I know I ordered this for someone else but I want to eat it!' So she ordered one for herself as well. Ha! Anyway, onto the order. I can say I was impressed. The stuffed roll came out hot and ready to be devoured once we got home. Very sweet and savory. The caramel apple topping was very good. The only slight negative was I would've liked the roll to be a little more soft when you break it apart, but nonetheless it was good with every bite. Not a bad first time if I say so myself. This is bound to become a new favorite spot for yours truly. Till next time :)
