My sister, niece and I went to the Scratch Bakery on 19 East Mellen St. We bought a brownie with walnuts, German chocolate cake, sourdough pound cake, lemon pound cake, and two cupcakes-one was a wedding cake cupcake, and the other one was triple strawberry cupcake, and lastly, we got a slice of the pineapple upside down cake. My brother-in-law got the pineapple upside down cake. It's one of his favorite cakes and he's had it from the Scratch Bakery in the past. He said that it just wasn't the same. My sister had the brownie topped with walnuts and icing, she said it had no taste. It lacked the chocolate smell, and she was right when I tasted it it was kind of bland. The best description would be it tasted brown. My niece bought the cupcakes. Other than being dry, the triple strawberry cupcake was OK, but the wedding cake cupcake was "tainted" with an overwhelming almond flavor, so much so you could smell it. Lastly, I had the sourdough pound cake, which also had the overwhelmingly almond flavor. It was dry, and the butter flavor was completely missing. I live in New Jersey, where there are wonderful diners that serve delicious desserts, and my favorite go to dessert is German chocolate cake. I was sorely disappointed when I found it was only one layer topped with the German chocolate cake coconut icing. The icing was OK but the cake was gummy and it lacked the extra coconut in the batter and there were no nuts or nut flavoring in the in the cake part. I found the prices to be a bit high, we spent probably close to $65 on these desserts. The ambience was cute and inviting, and the service was great. Scratch Bakery came across my FYP on TikTok. Since I was in town, I decided to try them out. I visited on a Saturday afternoon. The establishment was very clean and very organized. The staff was very friendly as they greeted us on the way in. There is a variety of cakes and cupcakes and they also do milkshakes. I ordered a lemon pound cake and a red velvet cupcake and my boyfriend ordered a cookies and cream milkshake. The milkshake was delicious and prepared to order. The lemon poundcake and the cupcake were very good but they just weren't as moist and fluffy as I expected them to be. Not saying that they were bad by any means I just wish they were moist. First time trying this place, I was hesitant because I thought they only served sweets but they serve so much more and it's fresh! There are tables in side, some with games. It gives a very laid back coffee shop vibe. There is also an outdoor area which is nice. The staff were super friendly. I had the chicken salad sandwich. it was phenomenal. It lasted me two meals. I found to be very adorable. The neighborhood is very nice located in downtown. They happen to be plenty of parking today. Got to park right in front. I asked her several questions she was able to answer all of them couldn't make up my mind on what order I ended up getting four cupcakes to take home. I felt that the cupcakes were a little pricey. Ordered the cookie dough, the banana pudding I believe it's the wedding cake. It's the almond cake with almond frosting and sweet potato which I'm thinking is a seasonal flavor. We got a pimento grilled cheese and avocado toast with fresh fruit lemonade and chai latte for a light bite while we finished exploring the nearby shops. The avocado toast was a huge serving with two pieces of toast with tomato, onion, bacon, everything seasoning and an aioli drizzle. It was very good and a great portion for the $4.75 price. Now, that pimento grilled cheese sandwich was probably the best grilled cheese I've ever had in my life. A large serving of a buttered bread with a generous portion of cheese and pimento cheese with just a few jalapeños. Every bite was good and the bread was perfectly toasted. My family has been using Scratch for the past decade for birthdays, bridal showers, baby showers, and most recently, a wedding that sadly was a disaster--not to mention all of my recommendations and referrals. Attending this wedding were local council members, lawyers, doctors, business owners, engineers, and local teachers. In this review, I will keep everything factual regarding my wedding cake. I paid over $700 for my wedding cake and delivery, which was scheduled for 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM on my wedding day; however, the cake was not delivered until 6:50 PM, and sadly, nothing was rectified. The following events occurred on my wedding day (the wedding starts at 5:00 PM, and the cake cutting is at 7:30 PM): - At 1:00 PM, I was informed that the cake had not been delivered and that Scratch was unresponsive to phone calls. - At 3:00 PM, Scratch still had not returned the wedding planner's phone calls. - At 3:45 PM, the wedding planner asked if I had an alternate number to reach the bakery. At this time, I was in the midst of getting ready with my groomsmen, while the bride was preparing for the ceremony that began at 5:00 PM. - Around 4:30 PM, Scratch finally responded to the planner and stated that the cake was en route. - The cake arrived at 6:50 PM. - Upon delivery, the cake was still not properly prepared, and the wedding venue had to make corrections. During an event of such magnitude, issues with the cake can have a trickle-down effect on the photographer's schedule, cake cutting, the wedding planner's priorities, and more. The bride and groom, as well as the wedding planner, should not have to worry about cake delivery while getting ready for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and subsequent events on the schedule. Note: The owner blatantly lied during our phone interactions and emails. A source from within the bakery demonstrated integrity by stating that the bakery had a hiccup and FORGOT that our cake order was on the schedule. Prepping did not begin until after the delivery time. In emails, the owner displayed a lack of professionalism, accountability, and integrity. Please be aware if you decide to purchase a cake for a wedding day. The following statements are from the owner: - "Not having the cake at 10 o'clock did not delay or cause any loss or harm. As it turned out the 5-6 delivery time was actually the best time to receive the cake because it was not planned to be served until 8:30pm per your coordinator." - "At the end of the day everything went forward without a problem and we believe we fulfilled our obligation and did exactly what you paid us to do. Again we are sorry for the confusion." - "We have admitted that we did not deliver the cake at the original estimated time. But it was delivered at the most appropriate time. The time you chose was not based on your wedding or reception time. We don't guarantee a specific time of delivery we give an estimated time for deliver." - "When we spoke with your coordinator that superseded your preference." - "At this point we meet out obligation And you received Everything you paid for, no one from any company guarantees an exact delivery time. I'm not sure what there is to rectify? We trust your quest enjoyed the service we provided. Thank again for your business." The facts are that you are a bakery owner. You did not come in contact with the venue or planner until 4:30 PM. You do not "supersede" a contract, the wedding planner, or the bride and groom's schedule. If a wedding cake cutting ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 PM, that does not give you the authority to deliver at 6:50 PM because of your own preference. We are beyond outraged and disgusted by her dismissive and insulting response. The claim that she "met her obligation" is an attempt to avoid responsibility. She didn't meet her obligation; in fact, she failed to deliver on a basic professional expectation and then responded with arrogance rather than accountability. No couple should have to deal with this kind of unprofessional behavior, especially on their wedding day. We are appalled by the owner's complete lack of respect, care, and professionalism. We want to ensure others know about the treatment we've received, and we expect a formal apology and remedy for her actions. read more

It is a bit on the sweet side so be forewarned if you are watching your calories or sugar intake. What could be better to positively review than a black owned, woman owned small business in an area under revitalization. Scratch Bakery has had a successful presence in Newport News for several years, and as a bakery in Phoebus area of Hampton. Now they have moved across the street and combined their successful bakery with an eatery. So today two former coworkers and I ventured down for lunch. When we entered I was impressed with the decor. It is very modern, classy and well appointed. The seating is very casual, mostly tables for two. The menu is on a very busy chalk board. There are fewer offerings than the Newport News location shows online. We approached the counter and had some questions. Our server did not know any of the info we asked but she did go ask each time. The menu board said soup but she said they did not have soup.. She told us the chicken salad had cranberries but it did not. When it came, there were onions and possibly a bit of maybe pickle and apples. It was very tasty served on a croissant. Sides are extra so I passed. What we did not love is it was served in a plastic take out container and it was very cold as though the entire sandwich had been refrigerated. I would prefer that at least the croissant be room temp. I ordered unsweet iced tea which is prepared individually as ordered. It was $4 for a somewhat small plastic cup. It was good and refreshing. Only diet canned sodas were available so my friends opted for the complimnetary cucumber water. I did not try it. One was a fan and one not so much. One of my friends got the ham and cheese and it came out wrapped in butcher paper. It was filled with ham and gooey cheese served warm and grilled. He really enjoyed it. The cupcakes were typical of Scratch Bakery with overly sweet buttercream icing and a fabulous variety of flavors. There were many specialty cake items on display. I am not a buttercream icing fan but that is definately their signature flavor with many fans. I picked up the tab for all of us and with 25% tip, just because I try to support small business employees and not because I got actual service, and it came to just over $50 for 3 cupcakes, 3 sandwiches and one drink. I would grab lunch here with a friend to grab a bite and catch up, but my friends who work nearby were less enthusiastic. I think with some improvement in the presentation of food; ie without plastic containers, and more reasonably priced drink options with greater selection, I could entice my friends to give it another try. Came out here with my sister a few times since they've opened up the newly refurbished and improved bakery, and did they ever blow me away! Yes, they have my tasty, delicious cupcakes that I live, die, and breathe by (if you really know me, you know I do not exaggerate), but they have SO MUCH MORE. The flavors really popped in this cupcake: the cake had the sweet fragrant taste of strawberry, while the frosting had the mild, yet heady taste of cheesecake, bringing this dessert to a next level. Their lattes were delicious as well. I had the most unusual flavor of latte: blueberry white chocolate lavender mocha (isn't that a mouthful?). Very complex flavor, but wow did it work BEAUTIFULLY. I had at least 20 questions about the business and bakery items and she answered them all with no worries. Now what to choose... Well my daughter is simple with her choices and usually knows what she wants....a birthday cake flavored cupcake for her... Well I saw the sign for it, but none were in the case. But again, have no fear, the young lady quickly advised, "we have more in the back" - music to my daughter's ears!!! And after a difficult decision, I opted in for the lemon cake! A slice that's already packaged to go. It was calling my name and the smell...I knew this had to be awesome! I must say, we both chose some awesomeness!!! The cakes were super moist and bursting with flavor in every bite. Like...OMG...if a location was on my side of town, this would be my go to bakery!!! While I have only visited once, I'm so looking forward to returning real soon. But why must they be so far!!!??? Well needless to say, they do have a second location on that side of town, but I believe this is the main station for all your bakery needs. With both hands raised, you must try out this place. I so believe you will have no regrets for indulging some of Hampton's delectable delights!! Worth every calorie!! Parking is available on the street. While there are other shops nearby, you can usually find parking with no hassle. However, if there's no street parking in front, there should be parking available on the side streets. You can dine inside or outside or take your order to go. There are sidewalks on both sides of the streets, so why not stroll down the Historic area of Hampton...eat good and work off some of the calories. I hope your visit is a 5 star experience too!
