Taking over the same storefront as the former Amish Deli (home of "Bowling Green's Biggest, Baddest BLT"), I had high hopes which were only buoyed by the enthusiastic welcome I received from the smiling staff as I entered the establishment. The nice lady at the order counter apologized and said the grill was having issues during their soft opening, but that did not matter to me, as I already had my eyes on trying one of the 2-dog combos. After quickly reviewing my options, I ordered the Sterling dogs with a side of coleslaw, plus a fountain Coke. Before tax, the total came to $9.98, which was pretty reasonable for lunch downtown. As I made my way to one of the booths, I cast my eye around the dining room, and frankly, I liked what I saw! The new laminate floor looked great, as did the brand new -and spotlessly clean- tables, chairs, and booths. The decorations and wall hangings were tasteful and un-cluttered, and I especially liked how the blue light horse silhouette (visible on far-right side of my dining room photo) conveyed a sense of good-Amish-food-meets-21st-century. After a pleasantly short wait, my order was delivered to my booth. The all-beef dogs were garnished with crispy-cooked bacon, red pepper relish, and shredded cheddar cheese. As you can see in my food photo, they looked great, and tasted even better! The side of coleslaw was also very good, which kind of surprised me, as I expected it to be overpowered by the clearly visible chunks of red onion, but the flavours melded together perfectly. I also liked how the staff stopped by my table to ask how the food was, and how speedy and friendly they were any time I took my fountain cup up to the counter for a refill. PROS: very good food, very friendly staff, reasonable prices, and a good atmosphere CONS: for a soft opening, I felt they were great, as I had zero issues! Overall I rate Sterling's Amish Deli as being Very Good, and look forward to returning!

Before ordering, I informed staff of my allergy and specifically requested that my sandwich be made without provolone cheese. My husband also reminded staff that I could not have cheese. We repeated this multiple times to make sure there was no misunderstanding. What makes this especially concerning is that staff clearly understood I had a dairy allergy. When I ordered a salad, an employee immediately informed me that the poppyseed dressing contained dairy and helped me switch to a vinaigrette. That showed they were aware of the allergy and the need to avoid dairy products. Despite all of that, my sandwich was still prepared with provolone cheese. I discovered it after I had already begun eating. For someone with a food allergy, that is not a minor mistake. It is a serious food safety issue that could result in a medical emergency. When I brought the mistake to the staff's attention, I was shocked by the response. Instead of receiving a sincere apology, concern for my safety, or an offer to replace the meal or issue a refund, the response was dismissive. The explanation given was that the employee thought the sandwich modifications were for my husband rather than for me. Food allergies should never be treated casually. Customers trust restaurants to take allergy warnings seriously, especially after being informed multiple times. What concerns me most is not only that the mistake happened, but how it was handled afterward. If you or a family member has a severe food allergy, I would strongly encourage you to consider this experience before dining here. Most of the people who work there are some of the nicest people I've met. I usually stop in to grab the cheese pizza pretzels, the cereal marshmallows, and something from the chocolate aisle. My friend who usually goes with me loves their hot cheese cups and the sauces they have to offer. The dip mixes are great too and the baked goods on the rack towards the back are tasty! Sometimes the prices are a little higher on some things but it's a very clean store and just fun to visit.
