Especially when our tour operator informed usthey had a "Whiskey and Raspberry" flavor. I mean, come on! And then when we got there, I ended up getting a doblé scoop because they also have a "Scottish Tablet" flavor. I'm not even sure what that is, but it sounded Scottish, so I'm in! McKenzie's is a small little shop, and they offer other items besides ice cream, but that was all I was there for, so that was all I got. And I was very pleased with my selections. Rich creamy ice cream that absolutely hit the spot after a wonderful day of exploring beautiful Scotland. I think just about everyone from our bus went to the shop for an ice cream tree, but the service was very fast and they were friendly as well. I don't even know how to pronounce the town's name (Pitlochry), but if you ever find yourself in that region area, you should definitely treat yourself to a delicious ice cream treat!

In addition to the excellent pies, we thoroughly enjoyed the people we encountered. We decided on pies for everyone, chicken & leek, steak, and steak & haggis, with chips and mash. The steak was the clear winner: tender chunks of steak, perfectly seasoned and moist. While eating at the communal table, we had many lovely chats with locals, which - in addition to the great people taking orders - made our experience even more memorable. I kind of want to go back to get another few sandwiches, but sadly I've left Scotland and am back in the states (and my routine work-life). A lovely 30 minute drive from my flat brought me here, through a lot of twisty-roads and beautiful country. On arrival, we got given the ugly duckling table of the place, ie not by the window. I had the seafood platter which was huge, as in I struggled to finish it. (Obviously did). No half-portions here, 5 or 6 prawns, a huge helping of salmon, same with the mackerel pate and some incredible oatcakes with salad and dressing. The Dear Green coffee was bitter and black and just how I like it. My heart did want the Salted Caramel Cake with popcorn but it looked slightly too sickly. I opted for a classic brownie and was not disappointed. My friend's meringue with fruit compote and cream was mammoth! Well worth a drive, you can pre-book tables which I would definitely advise. This location is a little easier to get to as it's situated in Killearn town hall. Arriving at just before 2, the immediately obvious difference between the 2 locations was that this is much busier than Quarriers. The place was mainly occupied by the lunching ladies of sub-suburbia, save for the odd lunching worker/working luncher. Due to the lunchtime rush the staff seemed to be a wee bit stretched, (the poor folk next to me had to ask for a latte a couple of times before the server came back to say she'd forgotten what they'd asked for), but thankfully I had no problems with the service. I had the tasting platter at the Quarriers location, so of course I ordered it again (after all it was tasty!). When it came out it looked the same, but somehow it was lacking some of its previous magic. Of course I couldn't leave without trying one of their amazing looking cakes from the counter, I went with the flourless tangerine cake (yes it is GF), which was fragrant and not too dry, it had a texture not totally dissimilar to polenta cake. Now it maybe second season syndrome or it could just be a matter of over familiarity, but there does seem to be something missing from Quarriers in this location. I don't know whether it was down to the time of day (I visited Quarriers towards the quieter end of lunch), the fact that this is a somewhat new cafe or down to the glass & white wall environs, as I said it just wasn't the same.. Don't let that put you off trying the place out though, it's still a good cafe, serving good food & the view out across the hills is really beautiful (especially with all the snow). If I taste not time were the issue I'd choose Quarriers Village over Killearn, but otherwise you'll probably choose Killearn for its convenience & almost as good food.

We visited Aviemore back in June and a friend suggested we go here. A bakery within a nursery in the Highlands? Sounded interesting to me! It was pretty easy to find from Aviemore, about a 10 minute drive. When we arrived there was plenty of parking on the left hand side of the road, opposite the entrance. To get to the bakery (called The Potting Shed) you walk through a beautiful nursery, the tea rooms are at the back. You can sit in the main tea room area or in a side room where you can eat cake and take in a spot of birdwatching as well. Sadly this area was full but there was plenty of seats for us in the tea room. As we sat down, the staff laid out the cakes on the counter (they keep them in the fridge until customers come in). Honestly, they laid out about 10 cakes on the counter for us to drool over (not literally). We all took it in turns picking out a piece of cake and ordering tea, and the treats were quickly delivered to us. They even had a good range of gluten free selections and the cake itself was heavenly. This was a really lovely stop off in the Highlands and I would highly recommend it if you're anywhere in the area.

Last time I was here I was pregnant and suffering with hypermesis gravidarium (extreme morning sickness), and wasn't up to sampling any cake. However I thoroughly enjoyed watching the red squirrels and the birds from the viewing area which overlooks the wildlife feeding station. Today I finally got to sample some cake. There was a huge variety of cakes on offer. I plumped for plain old Chocolate Cake. On tasting, this cake was far from plain - it was deliciously light and moist, not too rich and had the most beautiful shiny chocolate glaze on top, finished off with a dollop of cream. I could have eaten this twice! I may have to fit in another visit before we head back to Glasgow at the end of the week!

In the morning the store is loaded with delicious looking treats and by 3pm all it has left are a few meat pies and some apple pies... SOMETIMES they even close EARLY if they sell out! Everything is made there in the kitchen/workshop in the back and it all is amazing! Taste like your grandma just baked for you! The prices are so cheap and the goods so delicious! The Apple slices are my favorite! And I love their fruit pies! Sometimes I think about getting a job here so I can learn how to bake these delicious things!
