It was not the most kindest place I visited, but it was good enough for a stop and also because the other place I wanted to go to was overcrowded. I got a ginger cake and Americano. The cake was a bit on the dry side and too sweet for me. Prices are on the higher side, but guess that's what you pay nowadays in Pitlochry. Oh yes, and only one toilet.

For the sandwich, I chose ham with mustard and pickle, which got some interesting looks from the man behind the counter (for the Americans reading this, these aren't kosher dill slices of pickle - it's more like a chutney). It wasn't much, but after a full Scottish breakfast, including haggis that morning, we just needed a wee bit to stop the growl. All the ingredients were fresh. They've got lots of meats and jarred food stuffs for sale, but we weren't in any position to take such items with us, nor to have it shipped.

Sadly they were out of scones the day we visited but I saw others with them and they looked wonderful. The restaurant was packed but service was quick and friendly. Inside of the restaurant is quite small but welcoming and we never felt smooshed. We ordered coronation chicken sandwiches as well as the soup which was parsnip and apple. Both of which were so delicious! The little pots of tea come with a timer to be sure it steeps properly. Cute little touch!

We didn't mind the wait, as it gave us time to pop into the tourist shop and buy postcards and stamps. The wait was worth it! I had a coffee, one of the best coffees I've ever had, and we sat enjoying the view of the mountains and the view of the pastries, piled in tantalizing piles on the far end of the shop. We each had a roll, mine w fried egg, bacon, and hash brown; hubby the same with sausage instead of bacon. The food was hot, fresh, and the ingredients locally sourced, and tasted so damn good. Every dish that made its way to neighboring tables looked ridiculously good too, and I kept saying I want to try that, and that, and that!! On our way out we bought a chocolate raspberry brownie and a macadamia bar, both items are rich and flavorful, and large enough that hubby and I have been enjoying them all day!! I seldom visit the same restaurant twice while on vacation, but while eating we both agreed that we're going back tomorrow for another amazing meal (and more pastries, I hope!!) before we had out of lovely Aviemore!

My wife and I came here after an exhausting weekend away with teenagers... we were a bit sceptic as to whether or not there was decent food in Aviemore. Don't get me wrong, we figured we would find some ok food, but didn't expect it to be this good. We were told that we would need to get there as early as possible because of the wait... and we were like, this is an outdoor shop's cafe, it couldn't be that good. Well it is THAT good. As I said, you will more than likely have to wait (got this advice from a local)... and you could end up waiting for at least half an hour as we did. We finally got seated and were impressed with the menu thinking that the food couldn't be as good as it seems on the menu. But it was THAT good. I had a red bean burger (if I'm correct) that was SOOO tasty. They make the burgers here (not frozen like veggie burgers at other places). It may have easily been one of the best veggie burgers I've had in Scotland. It came with chips, which I wish I could've had more of but wouldn't have had the room for. To top it off, I had a pot of Eteaket tea with Red Velvet cake. So... a lot of places in Scotland try to do a great Red Velvet cake and end up with an OK red velvet cake. Mountain Cafe did an excellent red velvet. Both moist and dense. Sweet and SOOO filling. In the end, my wife had to roll me out the door and down the stair sideways. I was super full with excellent food. It may have cost a bit more than I would've normally paid for lunch, drink and a cake... but seriously I didn't care. Why isn't Aviemore closer?

There are wee signs with history and information for those interested and children. Attached the Watermill and Bakery is a wee cafe with obviously amazing rolls, cakes and breads and other goodies. On a nice day there is seating outside on the deck and in the garden. The flour, oatmeal and museli milled on site is available to purchase as well as local jams and biscuits.

**WARNING** This is a lengthy review and you WILL be hungry after reading!…read more Just outside Perth and a short detour from the A9 lies Tibbermore (I know, cute right!), a typical 'blink and you'll miss it' kinda place, but really, just don't blink cos this place is awesome! It really does have it all - fresh fruit and vegetables all leafy and colourful, a gin lovers corner, wonderful cheese and meats deli, health foods section including a variety a GF flours, breads and oatcakes (try their own oatcakes, completely different from the brand that sounds like Talkers but sooo much tastier!), tray upon tray of freshly laid eggs...I could go on but you get the idea! And that's just the food section! They also have a glorious gift section where I could've easily spent a small fortune. Everything from kitchen gadgets to picnic baskets, kiddie gifts to Emma Bridgewater pottery and everything in between. I spotted a few local producers too which I loved as I always like to see locals businesses supporting each other. Then there's the café/restaurant which has a few outdoor tables but plenty inside if they're taken; the day I visited it was glorious but somehow we got lucky and got a table outside (my shoulders can prove that #scottishtan!...). The menu has lots of tasty options incorporating as much of their own produce as possible - I opted for the Homemade Chicken Liver pate while my parents both had the Smoked Ayrshire Ham & Gloagburn Curried Banana Chutney sandwich (Dad went hunting for the ham to buy later he was that impressed!). Once decided, we had to go inside and order at the counter; I'm not sure if this was due to us sitting outside or standard practise as when we asked for a second round of coffees (and some more oatcakes for me as I'd ran out!), a waitress came over with one of those electronic hand-held thingys to take that order so I wondered why she couldn't have done that initially, anyway, not really a star-affecting issue. Pricewise, we were just shy of £10/head for a sandwich and coffee (exc our 2nd coffee round), a tad steep but it's all fresh and local produce so I don't mind paying that when you know you're getting good quality (and it really was!). Given it's out-the-way location it's a busy wee place but worth the trip as you could easily spend a couple of hours here eating and browsing. Yelp has rejected my recommendation of calling it Scottish Food or a Cafe and has kept it listed simply as Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt (neither of which I've tried here yet). There is some good food in Perth even though you may have to pay a bit more for it than you would in the bigger cities of Scotland. But just outside Perth, you find some farm shops with some incredible locally sourced food. Stewart Tower Dairy is one of these. Most people would have found this place either by word of mouth or from signs on the A9. I actually discovered this place whilst road biking with a friend. And wow.... so glad I know about Stewart Tower. I have only stopped here on my bike rides and they're very welcoming to cyclists, even sweaty ones. The staff here are super friendly. They also have a nice shop inside with local and/or gourmet foods. Most of the time I have had just a pot of tea with a scone. I have learnt recently to ask for the Tea Pigs Everyday blend. It's even better than the regular house blend, so I would recommend trying that or one of the other specialty teas. On another stop, I was trying to decide whether or not to push through and have a late lunch at home or whether I should have lunch at Stewart Tower Dairy.... AND... maybe I gave in and had lunch there. This was partly to do with the fact that the menu had minestrone that day, and I definitely didn't have homemade soup at my flat. So I had to have it. And I ordered a Coronation Chicken sandwich to go along with it, served on malted brown bread. It was SOOO good. I often feel like Coronation Chicken is a good test run for sandwiches for any cafe, and I wasn't disappointed. So... my advice is as followed: if you're in Perth and have a car, then there are two places you should check out. Stewart Tower Dairy is one of them. And you won't be disappointed. It's about a 10-15 minute drive out of town. And if you happen to have just biked through Little Glenshee, then reward yourself with a scone, tray bake or some ice cream. No need to push through and bike home without a break ;) Oh and did I mention they have goats and lambs for the kids to see outside? So bring the kids, but maybe not on your bike.
