I actually made a concerted effort to come and visit this pub, basically to see the gorgeous building in which it was located. Yeah, it really isn't one of the easiest to get to, by public transport (or should I say train) at least. Still, coming here to check out the building is definitely worth it. The thing was that that is basically all that stood out for me because the beer selection on tap was, well, quite limited, namely the typical that you would expect in a Queensland Pub. Iconic Brisbane pub This iconic pub has several dining and bar areas and we love the historic building. There is a great selection of beers on tap and a good wine list. We opted for the famous steaks and they were cooked to perfection although lacking the char grilled flavour. I'm not too fond of the sloppy bacon mixture that comes on top of the baked potatoes either, but otherwise we had a great night catching up with old friends. read more

We came for a Birthday Celebration last night 25/5. Steak was really good. It was supposed to come with Seasonal Vegetables.It came only with Asparagus Sticks which I like but not last night. They were cooked to be about the same as BHP Star Pickets. Vegetables is plural so what happened to the others. I was disappointed last time we ate at the Breakfast Creek Hotel because they have signs that say they have both Grain and Grass fed beef, yet none of the beef available in the hotel was actually Grass fed. Or at least they were all finished off on Grain. Most of the cuts of meat were at least 100 - 180 days Grain fed. I have found an old article from 2000 where it's quoted "Another long-standing tradition at the Creek is its strong reliance on grassfed product. The only grainfed menu items offered are one-off specials and an MSA yearling grainfed T-bone. "Real full-flavoured beef is part of the Creek's signature, and we feel we would compromise that if we moved too far from grassfed supply," Unfortunately 10+ years later, and they seemed to have moved to all Grain fed. For a steakhouse of this reputation and price, I thought they would at least offer a couple of Grass fed options. read more

A local Brisbane landmark and a must-do when you're in town. The Brekky Creek (or The Creek) offers varied food options from a few restaurants within the complex. You order at the counter, get a buzzer and collect the food when it's ready. Easy! And don't forget to grab a couple drinks at the bar. The outdoor seating is perfect for the sunny weather, and you can enjoy a walk along the river after you overeat. Sometimes there's live music, but it's never too loud. There's a smoking section off to the side, so you don't have to deal with smokers on the patio. Family-friendly too! read more

The Breakfast Creek Hotel also known to many as the Breaky Creek Hotel has long been a Brisvegas icon for it's steak. There are 2 distinctive bars in this massive establishment one on the inside and the beer garden on the outside. There are also 2 distinctive places you can order steak, in their restaurant and out in the beer garden. If you're on a date, I would suggest booking inside the restaurant (books out very quickly so make sure you ring ahead)... and if you're there on a whim, you may have to sit outside in the beer garden... which also books out rather quickly and fills up faster. The steaks are on display to prove they are fresh, and cooked to your liking with your choice of sauce. I always get the baked potato (they put yummy bacon bits, chives and sour cream on) with the garden salad... but you can get chips or vegies as alternatives as well. The one thing I love about this place is that they give you free damper (aussie bush bread) and butter so you can nibble on something while you get drunk before your steak arrives. Always good to prevent sloppy people mushing around the joint. The average price you're looking at for a rib fillet (my favourite) is between $33-$39 dollars for your meal, but there are other meals like chicken and ribs on the menu as well for those non steak eaters. Over the years the menu has changed, the celebrities have waned and the owners have also made an exit to new ones... but this place has history and with that, it will always be a busy place to enjoy your steak day or night. Definetely check this place out, empty stomachs beforehand though... the meals are pretty big. read more

We popped in here for a quick lunch today. It's a pretty nice venue, aesthetically and it was busy for a Friday lunch time. I don't particularly like the layout of how you order. You order food at one counter (which you have to pick up yourself) drinks at another and there's no table service. We ordered fish and chips, a chicken Caesar salad and a garlic bread. The $68 price tag was a pretty steep, honestly. Our garlic bread came quickly but we waited over way over half an hour for our main dishes. The portion sizes were huge, neither of us could finish what we ordered. Everything was nice, but my dish wasn't worth almost $30. Would I go back? Probably but I don't think I'd fork out the cash for another meal. read more

Dined at the Spanish Garden and was floored by how dodgy the whole experience was. The place was packed to the rafters, and even though we had reserved a table, when we arrived at the designated time we were made to wait in the entrance until they could find us a table. When we were shown to our table we had been shoved into a corner with a wobbly table which was big enough for two people (there was three if us), next to strange objects arranged on the floor which we found, through closer inspection, to be rat traps... We waited 20 minutes and finally managed to flag down a waiter to take our drink and entree orders and then proceeded to wait another half hour for them to arrive. Strange as we had only ordered the bread and dip entree. We actually went to the bar and purchased beer for our table there, drank them and the original beers we ordered still had not appeared. Each if us ordered steak, rare with mushroom sauce but when the steaks came out (1 hour 45 mins after being seated) they were all overdone and tough. Realising we had little to no chance of having this issued rectified anytime soon, we begrudgingly ate our boot leather, ordered more beers from the bar and tried not to look at those rat traps... All up we paid roughly $450 total for what I can only describe as one of the most disappointing dining experiences if my life. I certainly won't be hurrying back any time soon. Such a shame because I had heard such good things about this restaurant. read more

Very overrated, after ordering a simple rump steak very rare, it was cooked medium with no bleeding. The salad was hopeless- I dont understand it is not just there to garnish the steak, lettuce should be crisp, and not coated with sickly dressing to hide the fact they not fresh. The worst meal I've ever had was at the Spanish Garden at The Breakfast Creek Hotel. The steak I ordered was green on the surface and smelt really really bad. The moment I put a little piece in my mouth I knew something was definitely wrong with it and had to spit it out. I have experience in the food service industry so I was very polite when I sent it back. The waitress seemed very embarrassed about it, but when she returned obviously hadn't been authorised to offer any kind of replacement or reimbursement so I sat there at my friends birthday lunch with no meal. Many of the party I was with were put off their food by the smell and appearance of my steak. When we left the management staff were extremely rude to the two older members of the party who went to pay for the meal and it was an uphill struggle to get the meal with the bad steak removed from the bill. None of the six people I was with will ever be going back to the Breakfast Creek Hotel. read more

Went to Spanish Garden on Sunday with some friends and it was very ordinary and very expensive, small mains plus soft drinks and a couple of beers over $50 each!! The steaks were over cooked and not very tasty, the bacon on the fillet minion was cheap chewy and tasteless. Just as well I didn't order sauce the Boss said it was home brand or similar, chips were just ok, salad was ok. Very disappointing, neither the other couple or ourselves had been there for years and I guess it will be years before we forget this visit and go back. I can get a far better steak, cooked the way I want with chips, salad and a beer for under $15 at the little unpretentious North Lakes Tavern. The more I think about the lunch the more pissed off I am. Will not return. read more

ate in the Spanish Garden, We ordered three appetizers Cheesy Garlic Bread, Calamari and Chorizo balls (basically can't stuff that up so they were ok) For mains we ordered three rib fillet steaks, all medium rare with chips and salad. The steaks were cooked correctly however we not seasoned at all (bland and tasteless) two of us had a mushroom gravy ( looked like it came from a packet) my other friend requested a bearnaise sauce as well a bacon sauce on the side. The mains arrived minus said bearnaise sauce (after saying we could order it it appeared they no longer sold that (ever). Anyway the fries come cold and soggy and the salad was basically some lettuce with a bit of grated carrot. Basically for what we got it wasn't worth the money we paid, we told our waitress but she really couldn't do anyhting about it, which I can understand. Finally to add insult to injury they sat us at a really small table as i've previously mentioned we've ordered quite a substantial amount of food, so whilst the restaurant was empty we were bumping elbows. Fair dinkum, if you can't find a slab of beef to chuck on the barbie, a bucket of fresh prawns or a beer that tickles your fancy in this place, you are having a larf! Legendary in these parts, and with the original pub largely preserved in all it's tiled and woody glory, this is well worth a visit. The rum bar has more rums than I have seen in any such establishment, and the kitchen has a fantastic range of pick-you-own meats. Seriously, worth a crack. read more

Riding the laurels of their former glorious reputation - especially in the steaks - food was pretty ordinary when you consider the premium price you pay. I think they have the best mushroom sauce in town, thick and creamy with nice aromatic flavour. I never had anything else at this place. So it would be inappropriate to comment. Everyone knows that you can get an A-grade steak at the Brekky Creek, but not everyone knows some of its more subtle nuances. For example, it's the only place in Brisbane that still gets deliveries of XXXX beer in the old-fashioned wooden barrels. Ask for a XXXX "off the wood" at the public bar and be treated to the taste of Queensland's beer, the way it used to be (which is apparently less bad than it tastes now ;). Legend has it that the place is haunted by the ghost of of William MacNaughton Galloway, who met his untimely end after drunkenly falling from a second floor window of the building. A timely reminder to keep your wits about you at this venue. They see themselves as a family restaurant and don't like when people get too 'festive'. So if you feel the need to sober up a little (and you've already lined your stomach with a steak and baked potato) you might want to check out the Creek Cafe, which serves Vittoria coffee and delicious eye-fillet meat pies (in case you get a drunken second-wind on the eating front). read more

I'm such a bad friend. But when it comes to my steak hankerings, I have no free will. Brekky Creek satisfies me every time with juicy, cooked-to-perfection steaks with that amazing mushroom sauce that makes me salivate in delight. My brother's favourite is the Wagyu, and I can confirm that it is amazing. I've been here on group outings, dates with friends, and I even forced my family to take me here for my 22nd birthday. Huzzah, I love steak. Even before I let my steak passion take over, I used to come here with friends for casual dinners. Brekky Creek's entrees are just as impressive as their mains and on one occasion, my friend and I were satisfied with just entree sized salt and pepper calamari. I prefer the inside restaurant to the Beer Garden, but the latter seems to be a major attraction for guys (probably due to the TV being permanently programmed into the latest football game). You can enjoy a cold beer with a steak to make the night absolute perfection. Have your parking skills at the ready though because the Brekky Creek car park can get a bit ruthless. My family and I used to go there to the 'Spanish gardens' on an occasion and it was usually very nice. However last Sunday the service was extremely poor. We waited for more that -5 minutes to be seated a a table, staff saw us and either ignored us or said 'one moment'. It wasn't even busy that night. Good steak in a nice setting amongst the famous and iconic Breakfast Creek hotel. The range of meats is quite varied with all the traditional cuts, some such as the T bone in two different sizes. Accompaniments are the standard coleslaw and baked potato or chips and salad. The staff are friendly and the service quick and efficient. There are a number of bars and they have a nice outdoor ambience about them. I have been coming here for years and would estimate I have eaten here at least 30 times. The one thing I can say is that it is consistent and I am surprised to read some of the negative reviews. One disappointment is that about a year ago they changed the menu (in the Spanish garden) and whilst they added a couple nice dishes they dropped the pork ribs. These ribs were my all time favourite and I still miss them, this causes me to now sometimes go elsewhere. They have beef ribs however they are not as good. Anyway, this place gets busy so I'd recommend if you are hungry, book a spot or go early... enjoy!!! read more

When we came to Brisbane (13 years ago), you had to actively seek out a good steak with a lot of establishments subscribing to the 'cut it big, keep it cheap' (and look surprised if you ordered rare). There were a few places that had a steak reputation of quality and ability to cook to your liking. Char Char Char,was on the list and I fondly remember experiences at Michael's and Daniel's at Eagle Street and Circa at the Story Bridge. If you were to ask the man in the street though, the Breakfast Creek Hotel would always come up as the place Brinbanites go for a good steak. I've visited many times and have always enjoyed whiling away an afternoon with the famous XXXX off the wood and listening to good live music. The building is beautiful and steeped with history, the location is fantastic and the atmosphere there is always lively. It has a lot going for it. I can see why people flocked here and am sure it once deserved its place as one of Brisbane's most popular steakhouses. So why would I not award more stars? Well as it lives on its reputation as a steakhouse and that's where I always feel it lets itself down. In the Staghorn Beer Garden where most patrons eat, the steaks look good, plenty of choice laid out for you to see, with the ordering area looking like a cross between a kitchen and a butchers shop. While I wouldn't question the quality of the meat, in BCH's own words they are served in a "no-nonsense manner, with an Idaho potato, bacon sauce, coleslaw, slices of tomato and a bread roll." I just wished that you could opt in for a little more 'nonsense' rather than being left with a baked potato, wet chopped cabbage, chips or lettuce and raw tomato. Sauces are be limited to mushroom, chilli or peppercorn. There is no table service, so you and your party must queue and order and then retrieve your meals from the counter yourselves even though the prices are fairly hefty. Eye fillet $38.50? I guess I just expect a little more. All-in-all, the eating 'experience' makes me feel a little cheated no matter how expertly cooked and delicious the steak may taste. Few steakhouses can compete with the Breakfast Creek for sheer charm and idyllic location, but I feel it now has lots competition for a great steak meal. read more

It's one of the biggest venues we have on offer and can fit all of the rowdiest mates you can think of. I'd be hesitant to say you should go on a Friday or Saturday night if you're a bit younger though, you probably won't be running into that many people your age. The best time for a visit would be a cheeky mid week session for a game of pool and a steak or two. If your low on cash don't be ashamed to get one of the kids meals, they're just as tasty and about half the price. read more

Our steaks were overcooked (my husband ordered a medium-rare T-bone that arrived well into medium, and my medium-well petite eye fillet was well and truly well-done), the sauces overly salty (pepper and mushroom), the Idaho potato so soggy it was practically turned to powder at the touch of a fork and I have never been so angry by service as we got tonight. Apparently a $70 bill isn't good enough to warrant any sort of attention - the waiter actually turned and walked away when we said we weren't going to order drinks, ignored us twice when we tried to get his attention to place our order and unceremoniously dumped the bread basket on our table. Bar area has a good atmosphere. Ordered the barramundi. Tasted like it had been dipped in water and served. The hollandaise sauce tasted like it came out of a packet. My partner had a sirloin steak which he said was nicely cooked. Both had a jack potato which was wrecked by the bacon bits on it. There was also a slaw which came with both dishes. It was nice and not dressed too heavily with dressing. Overall if you like pub food this place will suit you. Staff were friendly and helpful. read more
