Getting a diagnosis of breast cancer again(14 years) I needed to make several hard decisions. Living in Florida, I met two wonderful breast surgeons and looking for a plastic surgeon who has expertise in microsurgery reconstruction was challenging. The one in my area only offered me implants. My gut was telling me I was not listened to, nor considered for any other form of reconstruction. My sister lives in Austin, and suggested I at least try to get a phone conference with Dr. Habash so that I could really know if I was or was not a candidate for DIEP. I took the chance and called his office . His staff was wonderful , and the very next morning( Saturday) he called and we talked for quite a while. While no promises except an honest opinion, we traveled to Dallas and met with Dr. Habash, had some tests and met a breast surgeon( Dr. Mary Brian - she's wonderful!). Dr Habash was open, honest and assessed me. He gave me his professional opinion, and to my excitement he let me know I was a candidate for DIEP. Now three weeks after surgery I am thrilled with the results, the cancer removed and I am healing . Dr Habash and his staff have been kind and always available for any questions or concerns. Dr. Habash had even texted me after the first week or so making sure I was doing well and asked if I had any questions. I am ready to fly home, and if any problems feel comfortable that Dr. Habash and staff will help me, guide me to a doc in my area if needed or I'll send pictures and he'll let me know how to proceed. I'll return in the spring for a second procedure , and feel comfortable that they are always available if needed. How wonderful to be treated like a human being , to get answers to all my questions, and have such excellent results from the surgery. My doctors in Sarasota are interested in seeing me and the results as they know that I did a diligent search of doctors that specialize in microsurgery and believe I have found the best! When I first came to Dr. Habash, all I wanted was to get the Cancer out of my body and to do it as quickly as possible. It had already been more than a year since my diagnosis with Breast Cancer. I had undergone chemo, radiation and even a lumpectomy, but unfortunately a bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery was going to be required. In my first meeting with Dr. Habash, it was obvious that my expectations and his expectation were completely different. He talked about his concerns with my body, in it's current stressed condition, and how it would not make for a successful surgery or recovery. He also talked about my weight and that I was considered a High Risk. This was not what I wanted to hear. All I could think as Dr. Habash was explaining the surgery statistics on his white board, in complete detail, is "I can't do this; wait 3 months AND lose enough weight to remove the High Risk factor?" Even though I was upset and not liking what I was hearing, I realized the more I listened the more I began to understand. He wasn't just concerned on the outcome of this one surgery, he was concerned with my entire health and well being now and in the future. Dr. Habash said that he wanted me to wait a minimum of three months so that my radiated skin could heal. During this time, he wanted me to focus on losing as much weight as I could. He and his staff would be here to help and support me. Dr. Habash gave me information and tips, suggested books to read and asked me keep a journal of what I ate each day. He even asked that I come in once a week, at no charge, to check my weight. Here was a doctor, a "plastic surgeon,"willing to invest his time and money in helping me achieve a healthier lifestyle. I thought to myself, "If he was willing to invest in me, I should be willing to do the same." By the time my surgery came around, I had lost 50lbs and I felt amazing. I never thought I would have breast cancer. I've tried to take care of myself through diet, exercise and a healthy diet, so at 57 I was surprised when I was diagnosed. The other unexpected component was that 3 months prior to my diagnosis I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. My husband and I poured and prayed over all of our options; our desire was to make the wisest decision. We had a deep trust in my breast oncology surgeon who counseled me toward a double mastectomy; with implants for reconstruction. Initially I thought this would be a good option; however, after researching women with RA and and the number of patient's whose bodies rejected their implants, I became very discouraged, because I didn't feel comfortable with implants for my situation. My breast oncology surgeon then recommended Dr. Habash. Initially she didn't think I would be a good candidate because I didn't have much abdomen tissue to work with.......I was on the thin side. I truly don't know how to thank Dr. Habash!! I was so discouraged thinking I couldn't do reconstruction and that I wouldn't have enough tissue to work with, but Dr. Habash was amazing. He was forthright in what I could expect, his bedside manner is exceptional, and his understanding of my situation brought my husband and I much needed assurance. He and his partners are remarkably skilled and educated in their craft of diep flap reconstruction. I am truly amazed at what he was able to achieve with my body. He is intricate and a perfectionist with his work. I am totally satisfied. My results exceeded my expectations. I am so grateful I will not have to go back in 7 years to get new implants. Dr. Boehmler and staff restored my life after the oncologist saved it! When diagnosed with breast cancer, my world was crushed. Everything was spinning out of my control. In stepped Dr. Boehmler, Sarah, and their caring staff. On my first visit, I was unable to even say the word cancer without crying. Dr. Boehmler and Sarah were absolutely the BEST I could have hoped! I found myself recently diagnosed with breast cancer and had decided that a double mastectomy was right for me. Then I had to make the decision about what was next. How do I replace them - or do I replace them? I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my right breast for the second time in two years. My breast surgeon advised me that the right breast must come off and we discussed reconstruction. Dr Habash is more than amazing; I call him a genius. I had consultations with 3 different plastic surgeons for breast reconstruction. My case was very unique due to radiation issues from treatment 10 yrs ago. Dr Habash was honest and put me at ease on what to expect. I wasn't expecting perfection but wow I got perfection! I was referred in February 2018 to Dr. Habash after a rough 6 months of chemo. My breast surgeon laid out all my options for my aggressive breast cancer and double mastectomy was my best option. Found out I had cancer in left breast (words cannot describe the terror I felt), after talking with my breast surgeon she recommends Dr Habash for reconstructing.
