I've been attending Breathe hot yoga since August. I was experiencing burn out as a new mother and needed to find a way to make time for myself. The amount and variety of classes offered between the mackenzie towne and the avenida locations allow for me to fit classes into my busy schedule. Many of the teachers are great and make me want to keep coming back. The price can be a little steep but in my opinion, its worth the physical, mental and spiritual benefits I've been getting from my practice. Just make sure you can make a class if you booked in advance on their app. Otherwise youll be charged a fee. With the unpredictability of having a young child, I learned to do walk ins for classes without booking in advance and havent been turned away yet. read more

I love it but not the price I don't know if this is the normal going rate for hot yoga but I find it super expensive and hard to commit. Super clean inside and love how they give a cool lemongrass towel at the end of the class it's literally the best treat at the end. OK - so this establishment does not only operate in a dubious way but they also try to put a lid on things being said by its customers - akin to mafia style. Now let's go in detail and see what others can do to avoid getting into a situation where tons of people have been and they have reported; (see Yelp reviews below) as well as complaints against them at Better Business Bureau, and you'll see the pattern: - Customer Complaints - Owner diverts the issue and gives long winding responses and muddy the actual issue So she complained and muffled my voice by going into technicalities as from her responses she seems to be everything: An Entrepreneur, A Manager, An Auditor, An Accountant....virtually everything in this world - and she is a master at everything. Let me go into details so that all future customers can see for themselves and make decisions and also tips how to avoid the situations: I along with my three friends and my partner had been their customers for some time; when we signed up we were given some type of discount to get roped in; during massage therapist visit for my lower back; I was told that the yoga classes are great but chose your instructor wisely, and the two of the therapists confirmed that even if you do not like the yoga classes or massage you can use the credits as it is the same establishment. I called in to book the appointment; but was told that you must book by paying advance charges if I need the sessions at certain dates, I did so and now I read similar scam they pulled on another customer who reported it on Better Business Bureau as well as on Yelp by reviewer Meghan H (4/8/2013) and Salman G (11/26/2016). Their sales people push for advance bookings and pre paying and their know all owner terms people as frauds and liars for booking early and prepaying for 10 sessions whereas the case they had for regarding dates and not numbers. Tip to avoid getting into above situation: Never Prepay - there had been complaints and issues with this company since 2013 and continued and reported as late as Nov 2016 and I will not be surprised if many other customers were intimated not to report. Once she gets the money from you, there is almost no way she is going to give it back to you on one pretext or other. Beware of this establishment, if you do not trust me, then read through above mentioned reviews at Yelp. Now let's come to Yoga classes; they have an app where you can book the classes if you have prepaid; we (my friends and partner) had used it with on and off success; twice it had happened that we had booked online and were in the studio waiting to scan our cards when we were told that class is already full as few walk-ins have been admitted. We were not only turned away but lectured and ridiculed as if we are some criminals even though we had three month unlimited class memberships and similar experience is shared by Amber R on Yelp (1/29/2015) also click on non-recommended reviews and go to Breanne L (6/25/2015) about this establishment being pretentious to a highest degree and also read review of Stephanie L (3/3/2017). Tip to avoid getting in above situation: Go to Soul on 130th Ave or go to Barre Belle in Auburn Bay to get respect customer deserves rightly and not be treated like a garbage as one of the reviewers stated. Third issue I faced was due to unhygienic conditions at the facility; I picked up an infection due to the facility being unhygienic (another review re nosebleed has been gotten removed from here just like mine was removed), I was flying out the next day, I developed serious allergic reaction and infection and I had to consult the doctor. The doctor stated that these types of germs breed in hot yoga places and can cause severe damage and it is due to the fact that hepatitis can be transmitted through sweat and therefore extra cautious cleaning needs to be done; which is not possible with back to back classes as well over booked classes by this type of yoga studios. That was the last straw and now we are happy that we have found Barre Belle in Auburn Bay to experience amazing customer service, great classes and most importantly fair business practices without any lectures and insults. Tip to avoid above situation: Make educated decision as there are tons of cleaner choices nearby which are hundreds of times better than this. read more

The reply posted by Breathe Hot Yoga Mackenzie management to my complaint (feedback) is incorrect and misleading. We have not a single late cancellation of massage appointments so far. On their website, under my account there are 5 appointment changes / cancellations in the last 2 years, and all are early cancellations. Therefore, the statement posted as reply to my comment is factually incorrect. I ask the management of breathe hot yoga Mackenzie to check their records before writing blanket statements that are not true, and aim to cover-up their inflexible attitude and rigid cancellation policy towards customers with medical emergencies. I ask you to change your style to be customer focused rather than profit driven. Try to alleviate customer complaints, rather than staying rigid. read more

Would you ever sit down at a restaurant, order your dinner and pay before you eat? Or how about when you drop off your vehicle to the mechanic, would you pay before the service has been done? No. Then why would you have to pay for your massage before you get it ? Unfortunately, it appears the only way to book a massage appt with Breathe is to book online and prepay for the massage. I thought this was weird when I did this but figured, hey, why not. I've never been to BREATHE and they're so close to my home. I booked my massage for the day I was off from work. I received a phone call from Breathe saying the Massage Therapist was unable to perform the service that day, and they had to reschedule I said "That's okay, I would just like my money back then please since this was my day off " "Oh we don't give refunds. " "This isn't awesome" "I'm sorry about that". So I had to prepay for a service, they cancelled on me, and I couldn't even get out of it. Had to reschedule for over a week later. The massage therapist, Jenn was absolutely amazing. My massage was awesome. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am because I would book with her again in an instant if they either 1) Didn't charge me in advance or 2) offered me a discount for doing do. I was invited by my girlfriend to try out the McKenzie Towne location about a month ago and will never go back. I looked at the schedule online, but once I arrived (3 minutes before the class was about to start) I was turned away and told that I needed to be there 2 minutes earlier to attend. I was ready to go, simply needed to leave my bag in the change room. Was extremely disappointed as I drove 30 minutes out of my way to come to this particular location, and walked around the building confused as I also did not realize it was upstairs. (Likely losing the 2 minutes I needed to be able to attend the class.) If you are going to turn customers away, I suggest writing something on the schedule that requires a mandatory 5 minutes prior to class start time.. read more

Recently Breathe came down a notch for me. There have been major changes to their class schedule and my favourite class is gone entirely from it. Furthermore, now it's more challenging for me to get to classes I want to do because of the times of day when they're offered. Overall, I'm not impressed with the changes made, particularly when I'd bought into a six month pass. I will not be renewing with Breathe as a result--clients have an expectation that you will continue to offer the same stuff as when they signed up. Right now I'm just relieved that I didn't sign up for a full year contract. While some of this is understandable as the studio is still finding its land legs, it puts consumers in a challenging spot. I go to this yoga studio because as a suburb dweller it's close to home, they do have several locations though. I've only been to the McKenzie Towne one though and although their name says hot yoga they do offer non-heated classes as well which is usually what I attend. There are a variety of classes offered and the descriptions on the website can help you determine which class is the best fit for you. They also have an app that is really handy for booking (or cancelling) classes on the go, I just wish it synced better with the calendar on my iphone so I could book a class and add it instantly, alas this doesn't seem to work for me. User error maybe? The classes I attend are usually challenging and they incorporate props which allows for adjustments for all levels of students. I really like my Saturday morning instructor she makes the class fun and challenging, my arms are usually burning by the end and thanks to her I can now do a headstand (with a bit of help from the wall - but still!). Yoga is my zen quiet time and I appreciate that the studio is a quiet space and that the instructors guide the classes with focus and intention. Cheesy maybe but it's really good for my mental health! The change rooms are bright and welcoming with lots of hooks, showers and mirror space. There's lots of free parking which is always nice. Today when I was there they had Nourish in to sell vegan treats so I got to end my practice with some tasty cinnamon bread. read more

I have been taking classes at both Breathe locations - this weekend marked my first visit to the newly-opened McKenzie Towne location, and I think I prefer it to the Avenida location. It is more spacious - larger change-rooms, windows to let some light in, and they also have a non-heated studio. I am still pretty new to yoga, so it's nice that they offer non-heated classes, including Beginner classes, so you can learn the basics before going to a heated class. The non-heated room is smaller, which allows for some more attention from the instructor. It's also nice to be in a class with other beginners, and not feel intimidated in a heated class with people pulling off headstands without even breaking a sweat! I'm definitely going to make this my home location, and keep coming for non-heated classes! read more

Great place. Change rooms have lots of room, showers. The hot yoga is hot enough to give you a sweat but not heatstroke. Instructors or guides are very good. Good pace. Place is clean. What I enjoy is that my membership can work across the different Breathe locations. This alone puts in a top. I go to this place and the one at Avenida. read more

A huge thank you to the owner of Breathe Hot Yoga for dealing with my concerns in a professional manner and refunding our money in full. I apologize for any rush to judgements that I may have made in my hurt. She has informed me of their perspective of what happened and I have learned the following lessons: 1) I must check my voicemail more often and check into why I didn't get the voicemail that was left by the studio. 2) Miscommunications can go two ways and usually happen when one side does not take adequate time to explain their situation to the other side. This can lead to a disconnect in communication and for misunderstandings to occur. 3) People who are well versed in mindfulness may have different definitions. 3) I can only read my thoughts not the thoughts of others and sometimes body language, words and expressions can be misinterpreted. 4) It is very important to clearly listen to the perspectives of others before forming an opinion. Although myself or my daughter will not be returning to this studio I'm looking forward to the phone call from the owner so that we can come to an even better understanding of each others perspectives. read more

I'm writing another review for this place, because Suzie Allan, the owner of Breathe Hot Yoga, kindly contacted me and offered me a free class to give them another try. I was pleased that she actually read my review on Yelp and attempted to fix things, as many other places would not even bother. I'm glad she reached out to me because my second visit was much enjoyable, and Breathe Hot Yoga can be one of the places I frequent for my yoga needs :) I decided to sign up for a 10am Saturday core class, to see what the crowd would be like. As Suzie mentioned in her e-mail, the class was not even close to being half as full as the $5 Friday class. I also found the class to be much more challenging, and definitely felt the burn afterwards. I liked how the instructor walked around, guided and fixed postures for people. This was the kind of guidance I was looking for during my first visit, that I did not experience. I would assume that it is probably due to the number of people in the studio. Also the particular instructor that I had was very personable and I found that his jokes made the difficult postures much more enjoyable. I also found that the temperature was adjusted regularly throughout the class, so that you were never TOO hot. I really liked this. Overall, my second visit was much much more pleasant. I plan to attend again in the future. If you plan to attend, unless you have a tight budget, I would recommend avoiding the $5 Friday classes (unless you don't mind being very close to someone). And as for all classes, I recommend that you register online to secure your spot (unless you are a student - there are student rates available but only in person I believe). read more

Using a throwaway account as the owner uses intimidation, shock effect, condescention and goodness knows what else to squash anyone and everyone who might have something negative to even think about her. I read the reviews and responses carefully and I see the same pattern that others have pointed out - we see a person who cannot handle criticism or free spirit or open minds if it is not in her favor. We were tipped off as secret shopper agency several times in regards to Breathe, and finally decided to see what all the fuss was about. And fuss there is, folks, don't let the "Calgary's top studio" tagline lure you. Yoga is a positive movement that also cares for the wellness of those who practice. This is not an establishment that shows neither of those things. You can see it in the owners responses that she does in fact think she is a master of everything and you should be honoured to worship at her altar. Or her bio...she did yoga once and immediately decided she was a master. In studio, the energy is worse. You are immediately affronted by lists of rules, posted everywhere. You are greeted by receptionists who are, to be blunt, almost universally rude and distant with maybe one or two exceptions...who may or may not be eating while snarkily asking which class you're attending. On one occasion, our shopper was shocked two see two receptionists eating McDonald's cheese burgers while scanning yoga cards. Yoga instruction - nothing to remark upon. Teachers go through the motions, energy isn't anything to remark on except maybe... One of fear? Maybe if they don't follow the rules something happens? Either way, not bad instruction but not "award winning" by Calgary standards. Makes one wonder which contest this is as it does not show up in a Google search outside of Breathe. But no negative interactions with teachers. Wellness - no personalities whatsoever here. You get your treatment. You leave. You might get a smile. If you cancel or miss an appointment, it's bad luck for you. If you attend an appointment and don't enjoy it, she fires the therapist (according to the Breathe Hot Yoga Facebook review page). Advice if you need to cancel or money back from owner? Find a way to get the instructor you had or receptionist you talked to or therapist you see fired. She will do it. This is the kind of personality flaw you can work to your advantage instead of pleading for empathy to your situation, as we have seen. Several of us have had the extremely unpleasant experience of "dealing with the owner" throughout the years. Either no replies. Or scathing replies. Or routing to someone else so she can deny blame for herself. One social media post reveals a large population of former customers and employees that have aided us in what to warn others of, and can be easily accessed if you know where to look. Universally, the problem is the owner and her chosen management and all situations can be avoided by not giving her your money... Let alone your yoga practice. Avoid. read more

I used to go to Breathe Yoga (both Avenida and McKenzie locations) on a regular basis with my mom a few years ago and was so excited to finally go back after all that time. I recently got a monthly membership so I can re-attend all the wonderful classes I was missing. Little did I know, the studio has seriously dropped their standards of instructor. Today, I attended the 9:30AM class at Avenida, I was beyond disappointed with my experience. I can honestly say that as an intermidiate yoga student, the teacher can make or break the class. This teacher most dedinitely broke it. There was a sub scheduled for this class, by the name Monique. Now, to begin the class, Monique came in blasted some music and as usual welcomed the class to the "9:30AM Flow". At this point I'm excited to warm up with some synchronized breathing with the class as most teachers would, however this was my first class where a teacher has completely skipped this step. Now for the majority of the class Monique continued to sit in the back and tell everyone what poses to go into with out demonstrating them. This was also done at such a fast pace I could not keep up, and as I looked around at all the other students I could see I was not alone and many others were having a hard time as well. I would also like to mention, my mother is a yoga instructor and has taught me to be very mindful of my posture and my breath as I go into my poses. Thankfully, i had this knowledge so I was able to avoid any injury. But keep in mind, I am no expert in yoga and still rely on the instructor to come around and let me know If I need to readjust myself if I am doing a pose wrong. Monique did NOT get up once from the back wall to guide the class into the poses or readjust any students with bad posture. For example, the guy next to me, you can clearly see he is a beginner. As we were in warrior 1 and 2 I could see his feet were not in line and his knees were badly bending inward, which is SO BAD for your knees! It was so obvious too, that any yoga teacher should be able to recognise and address. Yet, Monique did NOT. As I kept observing I noticed 2 other students who looked more advanced, but 1 of them looked like she pulled something the wrong way and was out for half the class laying on her mat. While the other looked as though she had enough of the loud music and fast pace. Not once did Monique get up to check on the students who were laying down for the rest of the class. It wasn't until the last 15 minutes that Monique finally decided to get up and do some poses with us. At that point I was already frustrated, so i stopped and just stayed put and tried to meditate. To experience all of this in my morning class had me raging. To think that Breathe yoga is okay with hiring these pathetic yoga instructors who just sit in the back and yell out different poses with out demonstrating, knowing that beginners would not have a clue of these poses. This is a yoga instructor who DOES NOT CARE about her students. She should have her license revoked as she is clearly not keeping up to teaching standards and hurting her students by being very negligent with her guidance. Breathe Yoga, I would suggest re-evaluating your instructors as they could be putting more people at risk. I would also like to mention one last thing, the cleanliness of your facility is VERY POOR. The floor was clearly not mopped up from the previous class, which is absolutely disgusting walking into a room with spots of sweat everywhere. STEP IT UP read more

I haven't been to Breathe for over a year so I thought I would go tonight and meet with a girlfriend for the 75 minute class however I had to leave 15 mins early to pick up my son from work. When I was getting up to leave the instructor came over and said this is a 75 minute class I said I know I have to pick up my son from work, she then said they don't allow people to leave early this is their practice and she agrees with it and it disrupts the class!! She then said I will let you leave today but In future not to do it again...wow really is it your practice to lecture me on the floor in front of everyone not professional! Won't be going back there again will stick to my Hot Shop where they understand life happens and if I can only stay 45 mins of a 1 hour class that's more important than no yoga all all!!! read more

This studio which just happens to be in my neighborhood, is great. You can most definitely get your sweat on here. The staff and teachers are very helpful. I recently enrolled my kids in their kids yoga program. The kids seem to love it and I am able to sometimes get a class at the same time. read more

I have always loved breathe! When you walk in, it smells amazing. The change rooms are always clean, as well as the studios. I have never taken a class that I didn't enjoy, and I LOVE the lemongrass towel you receive at the end of class. Its my favorite yoga studio in Calgary for sure! read more

Customer relation? I'm actually impressed! It's very comforting knowing that the owner of Breathe, Suzie, not only reads reviews, but also acts upon them. I appreciate that despite my fairly negative experience, she did what she could to rectify the situation, and she did. Suzie personally contacted me to express her concern regarding my review. She was very apologetic on behalf of her staff, and assured me that Breathe truly operates for the wellbeing of its clients. I recently visited Breathe in Mckenzie, because I booked a massage there. The massage room is very nice. I always practice at the Avenida location since it's closer to my home. I decided to attend a class at Mckenzie after being there since you can practice at either location. The studio is as beautiful as the Avenida location, pretty much the same look. The change rooms are great and its so new and clean. The staff and instructors at either studio are great. The instructors are awesome. Thanks for opening two studios close to my house! read more

Be aware, the McKenzie Towne location has no tolerance! I had signed up for a prenatal course this month I was hoping to make it to all classes, but unfortunately my husband was running late home from work for my last class, so I showed up 10 minutes late. I understand that I would have interrupted the class going in, however the girl at the front had nothing nice to say, basically just scolding me for being late. When I asked if I could do a makeup, or get a refund on the class she said no (it was about $20 per class). I am going to try Soul Hot Yoga on 130th Ave for now on. Maybe they are a little bit more tolerant :) read more

Well constructed, tasteful decor, enjoyable lighting, showers in the bathrooms, key lockers, pleasant staff. I was in town for a few days and stumbled upon this place using the Connect App, I am not a fan of hot yoga as I sweat enough as is but I enjoyed my overall experience at this studio. Def recommend for anyone visiting and also as your regular studio if you like hot yoga. Teacher gets bonus points for playing Beats Antique during class. read more

A friend recommended Breathe yoga at a different location. MacKenzie Towne was closer so thought I would try it. I have practiced yoga for more than 20 years. Four years ago I started practicing restorative yoga, after a car accident. Restorative yoga help with my injury recovery. Today, I tried the noon restorative class and have to say, it was very disappointing. The class instructor was very knowledgeable but the class felt more like a meditative breathing class with only 3 poses in 1.5 hours. Which was fine but I am more familiar with doing more supported poses when practicing restorative yoga. The facility only provides cork blocks and no other supports. There were pillows outside the class, near the block storage. I assumed they were there as support pillows for the classes. I took two pillows to class so that I could use them for needed support with my injuries. I had used the pillows for one of the poses and then put them to the side for a pose that they were not needed for. Part way through the pose one of the girls from the front counter came into the room. She stomped over to the pillows, snatched them up and stomped back out of the room. Not only did her negative actions interrupt the rest of my practice but I then needed the pillows to assist with support, due to my injuries, in the following poses, including shavasana. After class, when I left the room, the pillows were sitting on the bench where I had originally borrowed them from. I guess they are decorative and not for practice use. This was not a good first impression. Very disappointing and negative experience. I will not return to the MacKenzie Towne Breathe anytime soon. read more

I absolutely love it at Breathe Mckenzie Towne but I really wish the front desk staff weren't so snotty! Im not sure why they are like that or if it is part of the culture of studio fitness but its tough to watch when you are trying to be in a calm and healing head space. I hope they improve on this because although most members joke about it, it's really unfortunate. They are lucky they have fantastic instructors! read more

Like so many other reviews this will not be a good one. My wife and decided to try hot yoga for the first time so we purchased two sessions. However we were very rudely told by the girl at the desk that we couldn't use one because they are not transferrable. She was not nice at all and wore this condescending smirk the whole time. Okay so its in the policy. But to be so rude about it? She basically suggested we go home to get money for the second person, it was 15 minutes to start time. According to some other poor reviews five minutes to start time and you are not allowed in so I'm not sure what would have happen if we did. Anyway we left with a card that we asked her to write the managers name on along with her own. I called several times and asked to speak to this so called manager to no avail. Finally someone other then the manager called me back, she was nice. I explained that my wife had just recovered from a serious accident and was finally getting some mobility back in her knee but didn't have full range of motion. We wanted to see if hot yoga would help. I told her my wife was very excited about the session, she even went out and bought two mats and some new yoga wear. This nice lady was very empathetic and said she would pass the message along to the manager I had been trying so hard to connect with.She even said maybe a cup of coffee with her to explain the situation to her would help. Well its been six weeks and we have not heard back from the manager or anyone else from Breathe for that matter. 40 dollars won't make or break us, its the principle of it all. Perhaps my wife and I don't fit into how they want their clientele to look. We are in our 50s and could stand to lose a few pounds. We thought this would be a good start. This is suppose to be an activity which promotes good health and wellness. Needless to say we found a safe place to go and are both doing really well in our program. My only regret is I didn't read all the reviews before even going there, it would have definitely prevented a wasted trip and saved us some time. read more

I love Breathe. Let me tell you why. I have been going to the Mckenzie Lake location for over two years now. I started my practice with a lot of self doubt and lack of confidence in myself at a yoga studio. I really didn't know what to expect walking through those doors. But here I am, proud to be a yogi that's affiliated with the best studio in Calgary. The teachers are outstanding, the studio at mclake and at Avenida are beautiful and feel inviting and spa-like. I do most of my practice at mclake but last summer spent a number of classes at Avenida. Some of the same teachers are at both studios. I do like that there are two studios at mclake because you have double the opportunity. The classes are varied and I still have choices even though I do not go past a yin or a Hatha yoga class. The classes widely vary in attendees, large, small, fit and not fit. As a larger woman I was afraid to enter a room with a number of young hard bodies but the desk staff, the teachers, and the other yogis I practice with have only been kind and encouraging. I learned that self doubt was in my mind. So now when I open the door to Breathe, I inhale the invigorating scent of lemongrass and know that the next 75 minutes or so are all about me improving my mental, physical, and spiritual health through the assistance of the brilliant staff at Breathe. This is my studio and that's why I love it. read more

I recently just finished my 1 month introductory membership. I'm so happy that I tried Breathe. The studio is amazing. I have tried many different classes over the last month and I have love the variety this studio offers. I liked all the instructors and I am happy with the differences each classe provides. The studio itself is very clean and beautifully decorated with a large change room with nice showers. I have bought a one month membership because I feel this studio offers a very good product. read more
