I had previously worked with another trainer however I found myself becoming bored with the same old exercises with additional reps added on periodically. Working with Tal is fun. Tal knows tons of exercises and knows different variations to do the basic exercise. Just a bit different, perhaps a different angle that targets those muscles that aren't activated during the "normal" way of doing an exercise. Tal incorporates Yoga and isometrics into my workouts as well. I like the idea of "multi tasking" and Tal has incorporated this concept into many of the exercises she has me do. For example, instead of doing simple bicep curls with hand weights she will have me do bicep curls and squats simultaneously. Or she may challenge by balance during a simple exercise. It's like getting two for the price of one! It maximizes your workout, that's for sure. However, she is always cognoscente that at age 58 I have my physical issues. She doesn't expect me to do an exercise I think may hurt my bad shoulders or my lower back. But she has given me exercises that have strengthened my shoulders and lower back without aggravating anything. That's not to say Tal doesn't push me, she challenges me in a safe way I am very comfortable with. I feel stronger and healthier than I ever have, but what's really fun is when people say, "You've been working out. I can tell." I have a flatter tummy and great arm definition. I never in my life have had either. And muscles in my legs! I haven't had a chance to get bored, and I really enjoy the time I spend with Tal working out. It's a great way to start my day. She is a friendly, caring, supportive person who happens to be extremely well educated in exercise and is dedicated to continually expanding her knowledge of the workings of the human muscles.

Tal Cohen is an ideal personal trainer for me. I wanted to add some strength, flexibility and…read morebalance elements to the swimming, kayaking and walking that I was already doing. I knew that just using the weight machines (which I enjoy) wasn't enough, so I asked the Fitness Director at the Longmont Recreation Center who she'd recommend for a couple of sessions. I explained that I needed a good match, because I had had a training session with someone who made me feel less than bright, which meant I didn't return, and I've taken kayak lessons from people who made me want to whack them with my paddle. I went on to explain I don't learn physical things easily, which makes me irrationally, immaturely cranky and that doesn't make me happy with myself, either. She laughed and suggested Tal Cohen. Tal is just right for me. She is low-key, almost neutral. She didn't say, "Oh, wow, you're going to start working out at your age; that's wonderful!" Nor did she say, "Hum, weird, you just did that exercise on your right side and you don't remember what to do now that you've rolled over?" She just asked what I hoped to get out of the sessions and explained clearly why people need more than the weight machines. What she did do is say, repeatedly, "If it hurts, let me know. There are lots of ways to work muscles and I'll find exercises that are right for you." That put me at ease in the beginning, because I thought I needed to baby one knee and my lower back clicked alarmingly during some floor work. She also never made me feel uncoordinated or foolish. I know I looked pretty hopeless a lot of the time, but with her calm pointers it never bothered me. For me that has been wonderful. As the first couple of weeks were ending I moved into a longer-range commitment. This is what I said after five months: "I work with Tal two times a week. Since I started my balance is much better, my flexibility has improved, I am stronger, I can duplicate physical actions she shows me more easily, and I am so proud of myself. Some days we still do exercises that make me look silly because I don't have the coordination, or balance or strength, but I know I'm doing things my body needs to stay active and I don't care. Other days most of the exercises seem familiar and I feel like an athlete; that's awesome!" More than four years later I am still working out with Tal. As my abilities developed she commented on the improvements in subtle ways. When she says I've improved, she's believable because she's specific and she's not effusive; I have confidence in her because I feel her evaluations are honest. I like that she's confident in her teaching abilities. She recognizes that she instinctively tailors what she's teaching to different abilities and different learning styles. She can think of an incredible number of ways to work what needs working; a session with her is not a routine and it's never boring! She also keeps a mental record of what we've done and what needs extra work during the next session. She values my feedback, for example when I say, "Let's to that again; that feels like it's something I especially need to work on." I have also enjoyed getting to know her personally. She's definitely "at work" when she's training--it's not time to chat like girls at lunch--but she shares bits about her life and listens to bits about mine to just the right extent. We're in a mentor-client relationship, but I feel like I've gained a friend, too.

I mentioned in my previous post about her wonderful shop, A Natural Way, in Ft Lupton, CO. I specifically wanted to mention another wonderful part of our healing journey, a gift of a person, Vicki Souder DC. She is a chiropractor. However, she takes the word chiropractor to the Nth degree. I have been to several chiropractors in my lifetime. Her training and care are far beyond that of a regular chiropractor. Many can adjust bones and other things that can help you to have pain and or other issues subside. However, Vicki Souder deals with the bottom line with the different neurological aspects involved with the different organs and parts of our bodies that have had injuries. She is trained in cold laser along with a number of other trainings that she has implemented into her practice I, too, have used cold therapy previously. It worked well. However, it was very limited as to the machine was different, not as potent and lacked the skilled training of Vicki Souder DC. However, the training that she has invested in it and the quality of laser she uses really makes her able to go to further depths than other chiropractors I have met. This additional training and knowledge really assist in addition to help work with Julie DeVisser, TND to sew Humpty Dumpty together again. I myself, after only a few treatments, have felt like I have been started to be put back together in a different way than I have ever felt previously after adjustments and chiropractic therapies. Her handiwork is literally like helping to sew the nutritional supplements, foot baths and other treatments together in much more of a synergistic manner. Vicki works with the neurological areas of our lives, including the remains left after concussions and other mental stresses and health issues that cause stress on our neurological areas. She does this with the cold laser and her combined knowledge of chiropractic care and additional studies that she has taken. The adjustments that I have received from her were very different and last a lot longer than regular adjustments. The cold laser that she uses is Innovative technology repairing the nervous system, bringing balance to it. This as well helps manage chronic pain with her neurology based treatments. She compliments and works synergistically with the herbal direction and therapies of Julie DeVisser. We have mostly all heard that "We DONT KNOW WHAT WE DON'T KNOW." We don't know many times what to even ask for, especially from a chiropractor. I, personally, have been blessed by watching a few documentaries that talk about this type of neurological help. Normally, the price is extremely expensive and located far away. However, people who know about this type of help even travel from afar. Combining Vicki Souder and her gracious price helps you get this help that you could very well need and not even be aware or have heard without paying a few hundred dollars per treatment. In addition, if you were to contact them in advance and see about the other Herbal consulting that Julie does combined with Vicki and the other alternative treatments that most like will take you further down the road towards a more balanced lifestyle more quickly than with just one of the approaches by themselves. A friend of mine of several years took her mother, who had suffered a stroke and arthritic condition, hardly able to move, especially in her extremities. She went to Dr Vicki. After just one treatment she was so excited that she called me and said that her mother's physical therapists could hardly believe the huge difference in her ability to move. Now, after 2 treatments she has a much better quality of life. She is looking forward to more treatments. I am so excited about hearing this from her. Dr Vicki has been an answer to their prayers. Kind of like the Missing Link. And I am not talking about evolution. Both Vicki Souder DC, and Julie DeVisser TND practice what they preach and are extremely helpful and straightforward to the point of truth in helping you in your personal healing journey. Their wisdom compliments each other. The team of healers work hand in hand and are waiting to help you in your journey towards healing. As well the people who work there such as the current assistant, Ronda are very nice and great people. You will have a welcoming environment and yes, I feel this is a true healing Oasis in the Desert, in the Mercantile building of Ft Lupton. You can see the article about Vicki Souders in the Ft Lupton Press.
