Gloomy Sunday morning led to a trip to Brenckle's Greenhouses, and my mood changed immediately. This is one of those "looks can be deceiving" places at first it seems small, but as you meander through, it just keeps going and going from one greenhouse to the next. Pro tip: walk through first and take notes, then grab a buggy. The aisles are narrow, and the walk down to the last greenhouse is pretty steep, so it's easier if you already know what you want. 4.5 stars. Brenckles Greenhouses was founded in 1921 and is family-owned and -operated. They have a *huge* selection of plants, including perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, vegetables, fruits, and herbs. They also offer planters, lawn decor, and other products. I was particularly interested in native perennial plants, and I eventually found some. I selected three plants that had blooming flowers and were reasonably priced. At the checkout counter, an employee immediately rang up my purchase and thanked me. Near the parking lot, I appreciated that the store offered plastic sheets for customers to use to protect their vehicles from the dirty plants. I did not find all of the plants that I wanted, but I did find a few plants, and I will certainly consider shopping here again in the future. read more

Wonderful gardening supplies, plants, plus a limited number of fresh produce. The plants are healthy, and I've been quite successful buying their hanging baskets and mums. The staff is friendly and always willing to lend advice when asked. It's a family owned business, and they grow almost everything they sell. Brenckles has the most selection and best quality annuals and herbs of any place I've found around the Pittsburgh area. Many colors of petunias, geraniums, snap dragons, and verbena. Many annuals you won't find at Home Depot---things like Torenia, Gomphrena, Osteospermum and more. Several large greenhouses loaded with plants. My one-stop shop for my yearly plantings. But be able to walk a steep hill to see everything. read more

I just went here for 3 bags of potting soil. Grabbed some worm compost for $10, got up to the counter and they total came to OVER $70!!! I did the hardest double take of my life; almost threw my neck out. $19.99 per bag of potting soil. You have GOT to be kidding me. That's DIRT you're talking about. Local company, too PittMoss. That is scandalous. If you're just going to try and rip people off, they're just going to go somewhere else--like me. Right now. I bought one bag of soil, which I regret. I'm considering it a charitable contribution and it's the only they're getting from me. I'm thinking about returning it, actually. Jeez Louise. read more

I wish I'd known about this nursery long ago. The best selection of flowers, vegetables and herbs I've seen. Reasonable prices, very tempting hanging baskets and friendly staff. Ample parking, a nice selection in the gift shop. Somewhat hilly which could be difficult for some to navigate but you could just skip that part. The only way I'd have enjoyed myself more would have been if they had free snacks. Marketing people, please consider this! read more

Went in for some Perennials for my garden. The place is pretty good size and everything is inside in greenhouses. The staff where extremely helpful and friendly. They had a descent selection of perennials at reasonable pricing. I picked up a few perennials which are growing nicely now. I also noticed that they had vegetables which they said where locally grown. They had corn, tomatoes and peppers and cucumbers. I got a few pounds of tomatoes. I wa snot that impressed with he tomatoes as they did not have that farm fresh taste I was expecting. Basically they tasted like they where from a supermarket. I would definitely go back to Brenckle's for flowers and plants, But I would pass on the vegetables. I would give the overall service and selection 5 stars. I would give the plant part 4 stars. But unfortunately I would give the vegetables only 2 stars. I do recommend Brenckle's for all your gardening needs. read more

The best greenhouse! It's huge with an amazing selection of flowers, vegetable plants and herbs. Everything is very well organized and super clean. Great customer service. The gift store has the cutest garden accessories. I won't go anywhere else. My only concern is that is has steep walkways that can be difficult for some and elderly. I make my mother go with me so she doesn't have to push the cart up a hill. read more

This place is huge!! I would definitely say they have the biggest selection of flowers and plants in the city. I was looking for perennials and they have a whole greenhouse dedicated to them. There are tons! They also have a lot of vegetable plants as well. Everything is reasonably priced. I got everything I needed and it was very easy to navigate and find everything. Indoor plants, outdoor plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, flowers, flowers, hanging pots in every size and color combination, annuals, perennials, climbing, trailing, garden statuary, pinwheels, pots, stakes and yes... DIRT. Parking is adequate, a little tight -- but hey! it was the first sunny day in a while. The carts are great - the rubber tire kind that can crawl over hoses without incident. Not sure if this place was having an off day today but I was very disappointed especially with the customer service which amounted to zero. First of all, I phoned this business to ask about a particular herb plant and no one answered or returned my call. I drove there from the South Hills nonetheless and took a chance. When I arrived there were only 3-4 cars in the entire lot. Is there a reason someone can't answer a phone? They have a girl at the register doing nothing but she can't answer the phone? I heard it go straight to voice mail while I was checking out. I was the ONLY person checking out. That's the beginning of the poor customer service. Then, while I'm going through all the greenhouses not a single staff member asked if I needed help, was I looking for anything in particular etc? Not one. There are about 6-8 staff at 11a on a Thursday and an equal number of customers. You do the math ratio. Additionally, the staff purposefully averted their eyes so they wouldn't have eye contact and then be more obligated to offer help! Really rude inexcusable behavior. I phoned Soergels in Wexford and asked for the herb I was searching for and they offered to put some aside for me until I can get there Saturday morning. Now THAT'S customer service! read more

My first visit to Brenckles was yesterday, and I was so disappointed with the customer service! No one wanted to answer any of questions, some that were simple and a few looking for a recommendation for the best type of flower, etc. honestly, they all looked annoyed that I asked them a question. I decided to stop by for what I was told was fresh corn,what a mistake that was. The corn was awful,tough, old no taste.Three ears bug infested. The rest went in the rubbish. Will not be back ever. read more

This place is a real mixed bag. The greenhouses are spectacular and you couldn't do better anywhere else. They are built on a hill and it can be hard to get around them if you have any trouble walking, or if you are pushing a cart. Prices are mid range (a little higher if compared to Lowes or Home depot) for the plants but the selection is stupendous . The garden art(?) is a bit high, but it's that way in all those kind of places. The thing I'm disappointed in is the farm market part. It used to be a place where you could get very fresh produce, in season, at a reasonable price. Now you need to be very careful because it's starting to look like they are using the store for leftovers from selling to other stores and restaurants. Most of the produce is past ripe, unless it's something that has a long shelf life. The tomatoes and melons are too soft, beets are spongy, and the cucumbers and soft squashes have tough skins and the seeds are tough (meaning that they are old and overripe). Maybe they only stock the store for the weekend and the stuff is fresher then, I'm not sure, but I was very disappointed this time when I went midweek. read more

I stopped in to return a plant. I was told by the only person who claimed to be working that she couldn't do a return or exchange because the manager was off. She called the manager who told her to tell me to come back in the morning. I said I work in the morning how late does the manager work. I was told she works in the morning. She asked for my number but told her there wasn't any point since the manager only works mornings. I can't believe a business only has one person working and they can't do exchanges or returns!! I call that poor customer service!! Might think twice before I return!! read more
