Great place! Lots of very fresh foods and drinks. Drinks are from soda to craft beers. The store was well laid out and neatly organized and everything looks fresh. I was looking for cheese curds fresh and not so expensive. Shrinkflation seems to have hit a lot of local Madison area places. Brennans curds were very fresh; nice variety and decent price. We grew up going to the Brennan's in Monroe, WI so always love this place. So sad when they downscaled locations, but it just makes our visits here that much better. There's a distinct market smell that is amazing, and we love the setup. Plenty of fresh produce, great cheese choices and a good amount of everything else, including lots of local choices. Pricey, but great products. I actually started buying butcher items as gifts for friends and family! I truly enjoy visiting Brennan's. Their produce is high quality, the butcher is very friendly and knowledgeable (he may be the only grocery employee I remember by name), and the cheese selection is wildly impressive. My only annoyance is the few times I've asked some of the younger employees questions and they simply say "I don't know" rather than making any effort to find an answer. I ordered Friday special beer battered fish and philly cheese steak sandwich. Both was excellent. Especially the fish fry, I regret taking only 2 pieces. I should have gone for 3 pieces. This is the best fish fry I had. I cannot believe it came from a grocery store. And the prices were quiet reasonable as well. Pear cranberry fangipane tart from bakery was excellent. Foodie heaven! I used to visit Brennan's when they had a Brookfield location. I sorely missed them so decided to drive to Madison. I was immediately reminded of why I loved it so much. Not only is their produce aesthetically pleasing, it's the best quality. Their cheese selection is vast; I had to restrain myself from buying one of each. Lots of other local goodies to choose from and a beautiful meat case. There's also a deli and hot food section that I would visit weekly if I lived nearby. This place reminded me of the combination of a Whole Foods and Trader's Joe. Lots of high end fresh fruits and produce. I got some bloody oranges, tangerine and caulilini. They are expensive as I spent almost $16 just for these 3 items. They carry a wide array of cheese, beers and pastries. But I can't justify paying $22 for a loaf of banana bread. Brennan's has a great curbside carryout option. I was able to get all my ingredients put in my trunk with very minimal contact (per request). I let them know in a form of the items I want, specified when I would be picking up and also paid over the phone. I just needed to call them when I was parked and they came out within 15 minutes. They have a great selection of local beers/wines/ciders (HiddenCave Ciders is a fav of mine) and their cheese selection is top notch. My neighbors were raving about Brennan's Friday fish fry so I tried it. IT WAS THE BEST FISH FRY I HAVE EVER HAD. The cod was sweet and moist and the batter was perfect. The tartar sauce was rich and cole slaw was great. They sometimes run out of cod so pick up your dinner early to avoid disappointment. I rarely use superlatives but their fish fry really is excellent. Try it and you won't be disappointed. read more

Brilliant sandwiches - today it was a fantastic grilled cheese using marinated fennel, glazed shitakes, arugula, and espresso bellavitano cheese. Rich flavors and the perfect lunchtime sandwich. Four and a half stars from me! I was a frequent visitor to the old Brennan's. Usually I would try all the free samples, then buy one or two things. My favorites were the cheese spread and the sweet and hot dip. When my wife needed gift baskets for her job, I went crazy and bought a ton of stuff. My understanding is that the new Brennan's is supposed to have a smaller produce department, the same cheese department, and a bigger deli/sandwich counter. Produce dept was very much smaller, probably 1/8 of the previous store, but still had quality produce with plenty of samples. I very rarely bought produce from Brennan's-- usually only the boxes of peaches. The cheese department looked similar except the cheese samples were cut MUCH smaller-- more like cheese crumbles. I understand trying to cut costs, but I had trouble spearing any of them with my toothpick. Maybe a happy medium? The selection looked similar. I did not see the old version of cheese spread, but did see the sweet and hot dip. I didnt look in depth at the deli counter, but that was because there were several people purchasing. It seemed very popular. I did try two sandwiches. The Cuban was a full on win. It was as good a Cuban as I've found in Wisconsin (tied, or maybe slightly edged out, by TBBQJ's). It's been a decade or so since I've been in Miami but all the flavors tasted correct. The Italian Beef was different than I was expecting. They used shredded beef instead of sliced, on garlic bread, with their own twist on sweet/hot peppers/giardiniera. The best thing about it was the bread, which held up well to being dipped. The gravy was also very flavorful. Looking forward to going back and trying the Bucky Basil, which they tell me is one of their most raved about sandwiches. EDIT: I tried the Bucky Basil. Definitely one of their top sandwiches, tied with the Cuban. I like the beef even less now when compared to these other two! read more

Can confirm I was spot on with my first review. On this trip I got the smoked chicken hot sandwich. It came with an asian slaw and peanut sauce, and oh MA GAWD. It was so good. Every single time I go in here I get a new favorite sandwich. I have yet to be disappointed. This time I also got the yellow pepper and basil soup, and can confirm it was literally inhaled more so than eaten in a civilized manner. Hopefully nobody was watching. We love going to Brennan's because they always have the best produce. Also the farmer's basil cheese and smoked string cheese are favorites in our house. The remodel of the building looks like it will be really beneficial for them, and I can't wait until sampling can come back in the store. As of late, we have been going to their Smokehouse Cafe more for lunch and dinner options, mostly for the pressed sandwiches and grilled cheeses. Everyone we have had so far has had great flavor! Although, I wish they would ease up on the aioli a little bit. Also, this last time when we ordered online, we asked for no bacon and no aioli on one sandwich, and when we got it, both were on the sandwich. The bacon was easy enough to remove, but you can't really get aioli off of a pressed sandwich. Sad. We've ordered the spicy turkey pressed sandwich, the spicy cauliflower pressed sandwich, the cuban pressed sandwich, and the roasted butternut squash grilled cheese. Both spicy sandwiches were just the right amount of spice from the spicy trinity, but like I said, a little too much aioli for my liking. Especially because the bread absorbs a lot of it and turns kind of greasy. Speaking of the bread, the herbed cuban roll is amazing, filled with flavor! The cuban was packed with meat and was pretty well balanced. The butternut squash grilled cheese was unexpected, yet completely made sense when we ate it. It had nice texture balance with the crunch from the pumpkin seeds and the squash was a great addition of creaminess. It pairs great with the spicy turkey sandwich. We will definitely be back to try more sandwiches and I've also heard that the weekend cheese curds are supposed to be pretty good. We'll judge that in the future. read more

We were heartbroken when Brennan's announced that they were closing, so we were thrilled when this reboot was announced. The fruit is still there, though in a much smaller scale. Cheese options didn't seem downsized very much of at all, and there are still plenty of free samples. Fewer bottles of wine for sale, but did notice a new mix/variety of beer, including some hard to find microbrews. Still have huge selection of Jacobson Bros meats as well as their delicious potato salad. The biggest change is the addition of their made to order "Dynamite Sandwiches". A small seating area next to the windows - three tables and a bunch of counter seating, or you can get them to go. You order at the counter, they give you a bar code ticket to take to the front register to pay (grab drinks, chips, anything else in the store that you want, on the way). Open kitchen behind the counter, so you can watch them as they build your sammie. MANY sandwich options, including a whole section of grilled cheese sammies, which made this cheese eating vegetarian happy. I got the one that featured my absolute favorite Brennan's cheese: Basil Farmer cheese, and they added marinated tomatoes and arugula. It was gigantic, and I only planned on eating half of it when I saw it, but accidentally ate the whole thing because it was too good. Many, many meaty sandwiches available - hot and cold. A deli case of stewing meats to stare at you as you make your decision. The guy working greeted us immediately, letting us know how proud he is of their Cuban sandwich. One of the Hubs' faves, so he immediately went for it. Bread was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, panini pressed to perfection. Juicy, chock full of a ton of ham and smoked pork. Perfect balance of flavors, and for sure one of the best Cubans in town (& he has tried MANY of them). He is already planning on bringing his coworkers here for their next lunch outing (next week!) and trying to plan which sandwich to try next - if he can tear himself away from the Cuban. For sure skip the chain sandwich joints littering up the west side, and go to Brennan's instead. Their new sandwiches are definitely dynamite!! read more

I grew up going to Brennan's. Then moved to Florida (the cheese desert). I fly back to visit a few times a year, and when I do I come to Brennan's to stock up on cheese. I put it in a rolling cooler and fly it home. So glad it's reopened!!!! It seems that I find a new unique cheese every time I come here. For the first time I tried their deli for lunch.
