We have stopped in this store many times over the years especially after being at the Saturday Farmers market. The store feels a bit sparsely stocked but they do have a nice selection of cheeses from around the state. They do offer some small samples. The prices are not cheap but similar to other specialty cheese stores around the area. We've picked up many different cheeses here over the years. This store isn't as nice or as well stocked as their location in Milwaukee on 3rd Street. I hope this place continues to survive on State Street. read more

We haven't had time this visit to do a creamery or cheese factory visit, yet this cheese mart downtown Madison was a fabulous stop for us to learn more about the State of WI's cheese producers and sample (free) some of the most popular ones! The staff was helpful with our questions, grateful they offer drinks for purchase, and a public bathroom. Also - perfect stop for souvenirs/gifts! Super cute store! read more

I'm really sorry to be leaving a bad review, but I hope the business will see this and address it so that they don't lose other future customers. The day I went in was a nice day and the door was open, so fresh air. Nice! However, within moments I was overtaken by the smell of a cleaning agent: Fabuloso. It was horrible. It definately took away my appetite, gave me a headache and made me nauseous and I wondered what it was doing to the cheese sitting out uncovered in the bowls. I wish food places would educate themselves about the proper cleaning solutions that are safe to use around food AND don't have caustic chemicals. It's becoming a real problem. People think just because something is sold in a store, that it's safe. Of that if they like the smell, everyone else will too. It doesn't work that way. In fact, I wonder if there are standards the public health department has around the types of cleaning solutions food establishments can use. It's a problem that hasn't always existed, but is cropping up more and more. I hate to have to leave an establishment because of it. I wonder how many others do too. read more

Wisconsin Cheese Mart offers a good selection of mostly individual portioned cheeses and offers free samples of their season cheeses. The store is pretty small and there's not indoor seating. I went to the Cheese Mart on State Street in Madison. Unfortunately, the generous sampling I was expecting was non existent, I say this based on a previous. The first time I visited, there were probably 9 different these to sample on the sample table. On the first visit, I enjoyed the aged cheese. The 5 year sample was great.. This time was not such a moving experience. There were only two bowls on the sample table, and they were emply. I did purchase a few blocks of cheese, but that was because I had the experience prior. The cheese is good, as you might notice someone"ahem" already busted the wrapper and cut into my Smoked Cheddar Cheese block. The mart is a cute shop, but the proprietor might have a higher conversation rate if customers entering the store were able to actually sample more of the cheese . read more

I thought that was so cute. They also had 4 cheese samplers out for you to try. The cheese was organized very nicely and all the labels were really helpful. However, the customer service was not good at all. I came into the store and asked the employee, Ian, for some help and on what Wisconsin cheese to get since I'm coming from out of state and wanted to purchase cheese. He was not helpful at all and even dismissive to me, as he just went back to being on his laptop even though I was the only customer in there. Shorty after, another customer came in and she asked a similar question to mine and he immediately got up to help her and clearly explained how the cheeses were laid out and gave details and some of them. I understand I did not look very polished as I came into the store after a workout, but that shouldn't be basis for discrimination. I wish I could say it was a good overall experience, but the employee truly was rude and makes me not want to come back. If a customer is evidently confused, intimidated and asking questions you should at least try to help the customer. read more

Super friendly staff and wonderful selection for all cheese lovers! I was in town for business and was greeted by a super down to earth lady who ran the shop that morning. Since I was rushing to get to the airport I grabbed what I knew would stay good on a 2 hour and some change flight. If anything I would recommend to capitalize on the massive amounts of negative space that could be filled with other goodies. Other than that if you're staying in and around the capitol, this is a must visit! read more

Cute little cheese shop nearby the Capital in Madison. From the outside looking in, I was expecting a lot more. However, there is a decent selection of cheese. I wonder if they will be adding more to the shop because there is a lot of dead space in there. The best part for us was by happenstance, we arrived 10mins after a cheesemaker dropped off fresh curds. Super fresh. The squeaky fresh we all desire. They were delicious! There's a couple coolers filled with curds, spreads, bars. You certainly can find good cheese here no doubt. I just wasnt wowed. Also, my card was charged double due to "software issues" and had to deal with that at the bank. Meh. read more

Super excited to get cheese when I walked into this store. Amazing selection and the samples were great. Ready to buy the 12 year cheddar but walked out without purchase due to the lack of customer service. Walked in and no other customers were in the store. No greeting from the one female employee. Tried the samples after I inquired about them. There was no explanation of the shop or layout. Nothing. Asked where to find the cheese I liked to which she told me to look for the star. Didn't leave the counter until I asked again the location of the cheese. She came out and pointed to it and walked away. At that point I left. I'm not supporting bad customer service. read more

Mail order customer here; haven't had the chance to visit the shop since I live in Philadelphia. I've made four orders over the past several months: two for us and two as gifts. All four were delivered chilled and extremely quickly. Really efficient service from these folks! It's not like we don't have a lot of cheese here in Pennsylvania, but some varieties that are common there (beer cheese, brick cheese, etc) aren't easily found around here. Actually it was a search for a Dutch cheese I love (Leyden, with cumin and caraway seeds) that lead me to order from the WCM. And I sure can't find cheese made with New Glarus Raspberry Tart in these parts. I'll definitely be back. read more
