Brent Manor Alvarinho, southerly vistas, beautiful winery

wonderful discovery in Faber - finally! (just learned that they've been there for years), off of RTE 29, close to but thankfully not on 151 (it was quiet!), about 25-mins from Wintergreen and Charlottesville. Portuguese style wines were very good, and a few Virginia staples (Viognier, Cab-franc...) and port "style" wines that were fantastic. beautiful vistas and the wine is good, the owners were wonderful, we took a picnic, had a tasting then several bottles then left left with a hefty box and looking forward to returning soon.

This a new winery in the area. It's has gorgeous views and very relaxing. They have a small stage on the grounds for bands. Plenty of seating outside. They have port wine, white wine, & couple sweet wines. The owners run the place and no other help. They are very friendly, knowledgeable about their wine. We had a great time here. We took home some of the port wine. Highly recommend stopping here. You will not be disappointed. Wish they had more of there logo stuff on hand. I like collecting logo things from wineries we have visited. We bought a set of wine glasses.

I decided to visit this wonderful winery with my family when I was in town for vacation. The view is great and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We tried the wine tasting and the owner explained each wine in detail. Wine tasting was such a great experience to figure out which wine suit our taste. We decided to take home bottles of 2017 Touriga Nacional, it was full bodied, very rich in taste which went really well with New York steak and 2018 Petit Manseng which is smooth with hint of pineapple. If you're in town, this place is definitely worth the visit!

Fabulous wine and port not to be missed. George the owner was an exceptional host. He was really knowledgeable and kind. We had a lovely visit and can't wait to return. This is a must visit vineyard with a very hard working host who knows his wine and port. We have toured many vineyards and this certainly was the best in Virginia. Highly recommended.

If you like Portuguese wines (and who doesn't?), you'll enjoy Brent Manor. For the time being they don't have any mature grape vines, but they do import Portuguese wines wholesale and pour them in the tasting room. They also make a few whites and a chambourcin made with grapes from other VA vineyards; the Sav Blanc was particularly good. The building is on the small side, but is cozy and has a nice view of the hills. But the best part was the hospitality of my hosts (and the winery co-owners) Jorge and Tracie, who were very personable and happy to explain their plans to build a B&B. Jorge is from Portugal, and his family's background is his inspiration for making wine. For my own tasting, they poured wines from several varietals that I'd never heard of before; Padeiro & Tinta Amarela, where have you been all my life? I know their cousins Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo), but I'd never realized how many other family members they have back home. As their tasting menu of 'guest' Portuguese wines is always changing, there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to expand their palate with grapes that likely won't be found in neighboring vineyards. My one complaint is Jorge won't make a port-style (although he has imported Ports on the tasting menu), because having tasted plenty of 'real' Ports back in Portugal, he's afraid he'd never do one justice here in Virginia. But I love Ports, and I bet he'd make a great one!

A view from the patio where we did our tasting.

Beautiful scenery which makes this a great place to taste wines. The wines are great and there's something for everyone. I liked their lemon crush so much I bought a couple bottles of petit manseng to make it at home. They have their own delicious port-style wine as well as some from Portugal that are delicious. They are very friendly and I highly recommend a visit here.

This vineyard has great Portuguese wines and a beautiful view. Their winetails (wine cocktails) are unique and delicious. The lemon crush winetail is my favorite! Jorge and Tracie are so friendly and welcoming. I recommend Brent Manor to anyone visiting Charlottesville.

This was a great place to learn about Portuguese wine. Even though they were somewhat busy when we arrived the owner was able to give us a good experience. We got a delicious vinho verde and snacks to enjoy on their porch (beautiful view to boot). In general would highly recommend.

Amazing, low key winery with exceptional hosts. The view is one of the best, with a high view of the rolling hills. The building has a rustic European look but with a modern twist (fans!). The wines stand out with a European taste deep in the heart of Virginia. Better yet, the cost is reasonable for the taste and experience. Definitely recommended, but watch out on the turn off from the road--it's a quick one.

But what to do? Enter wineries!! We headed west toward Charlottesville, and first stopped in Palmyra where the winery there was only open for curbside pick up. My friends loaded the pickup with cases of wine but we were still in search of a charcuterie board and an open vineyard! Yelp to the rescue! We called the winery Yelp advised us was only about 10 miles away in Scottsville. It was open! Yes, they had charcuterie!! What a stupendous find! We approached the thistle blue painted sign and charming gate welcoming us to Thistle Gate Vineyard! Through the misty rain, the white barn-like cottage with the serene blue roof looked something from a Nicholas Sparks movie. Utterly quaint and beautiful! The wide porch was open for outdoor seating, wrought iron tables and chairs sprawled along the long planked flooring. Restrooms were located around the side so one didn't have to enter the winery. We were greeted by the owner who handed us a wine menu and their "flight sheet". The four of us chose our wine flights and each got a charcuterie box! Ahhh, this is the life! While we awaited our libations and sustenance, we spied an inviting gazebo near the vineyards. Our host said we were welcome to it! The grounds were lovely, albeit a bit soggy, a barrel fountain babbled along with the now drizzling rain, a bottle tree rooster glistened in the garden, cute slate signs were placed hither and thither around the shrubbery, it was all so idyllic. Our flights were served in pieces of wood made from wine barrels. Plastic cups were used due to Covid, but that didn't diminish the flavors of the fruit of the vine. I chose three reds and a blush. The Cabernet France was full-bodied with a dry finish. The Meritage (a portmanteau of Merit & Heritage) was delicate blend of varietals with fruity notes, the Thistle Red was a well-balanced blend of Merlot & Petit Verdot with a mild berry flavor and a rich burgundy color, and my favorite was the Thistle Blush, a crisp rosé made with Chambourcin grapes, easily my top rated grape! The blush was perfect for this overcast summer day, sipping the day way! I also tasted the St. George's Red Reserve which was also made with Chambourcin grapes and whispered cherry notes. Also my friend shared with me her Chardonnay which was a tad dry to my taste, but if you like white wine, I'm sure you'll like this one! What we took home??? The Thistle Red, couple bottles of Meritage, St. George and of course, several bottles of Thistle Blush! We enjoyed all these fine wines while in the gazebo surrounded by rows and rows of vineyards. What made the afternoon even better was the gorgeously presented charcuterie box! Two types of crackers served with salami, Brie, Swiss, and Gouda along with huge green grapes, dried apricots and salted almond Ghirardelli dark chocolates. I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the perfect complement to our wine tasting! A heavenly day spent in this dreamy winery, the only one in Fluvanna county, certainly cured our doldrums!! We are certainly returning to this hidden gem!! One sign posted says "We're so glad you're here", so are we Thistle Gate Vineyard, so are we!
