Came to this cute vineyard because I found it on a best winter vineyards in Charlottesville list ***LOCATION*** I love all of cville's vineyards. This one was especially pretty with the lake and surrounding mountains. It's the perfect spot for a wedding, but I learned they don't do weddings here. ***EXPERIENCE*** A stunning space surrounded by mountains and great windows so every spot has a view. It was a bit quiet inside so my friend and I decided to sit outside so we could be as loud as we wanted while catching up. The connoisseur answered all the questions we had and had nice recommendations. We liked most of the wines we tried. We shared the red and white tasting flights (it was a lot of wine for the two of us). ***PRICE*** The two tasting flights were $43.90 total (tip and tax included). I split this with my friend. The flights equaled about two and a half drinks. ***BATHROOM*** There are two single all gender bathrooms. Kept clean (and warm which is nice during the winter). ***CONCLUSION*** So happy to have checked this vineyard out. My friend and I really liked it. read more

Pollak Vineyards is so close to being a five-star experience! We went on Memorial Day Monday, which is when most wineries in the area were closed. I think it is very smart of them to be open on Holiday Mondays. The view of their vineyards, the mountains, their pond, and the surrounding area is beautiful! The wines offered for tastings were ok, but not top-notch. Sadly, none of their award-winning wines were available to sample! I understand they are a small winery, but offer a special wine flight at a higher cost and I bet more people will purchase these 90+ point James Suckling bottles! We did buy a few glasses of their highly rated wines: the 2021 Chardonnay and the 2020 Viognier. They were excellent!! There were only two servers working that day, so it was difficult when one was occupied with a tasting and the other was doing things in the back. They were both very nice and tried their best, but it did cause most of the other couples and groups a few minutes waiting as things got busy. It was 90º the day we went, so despite the outdoor patio with umbrellas, the breeze couldn't keep up with cooling us off. We would've enjoyed our tasting on the covered patio area off the main building, but here's why I took off a star: a family had literally taken over several tables by putting their baby's toys and supplies on a blanket that they laid out in the walkway around the covered tables. This child was probably about 3, so because he was bored, he started to fuss and cry. Children do this and I understand. However, every single other table nearby that was occupied ultimately left the patio and came inside, as did we. The parents were oblivious to this and dominated that area for over 2 hours. Finally, we love dogs, but your brand new puppy is going to be rambunctious and will probably not stay still enough to allow you or others a relaxing tasting! Overall, we will probably come back, but hope with a few changes this could be a 5-star experience! read more

We came here as part of a bachelorette trip and we pleasantly enjoyed our time. This vineyard was more lowkey than our previous one; not as popular of a place to visit, but the wine was great. We did not find any guided wine samplings/flights/tours, but we did get to enjoy two bottles while sitting outside under an umbrella. I would suggest ordering the bread and olive oil to enjoy with your wine...we did and we genuinely enjoyed the crispness of the baguette. Lovely winery with a nice view. Pollak vineyards has a great view of the mountains with a lake on the property. The patio is fully covered with plenty of seating. There is also an additional patio with umbrellas at each table in addition to a great deal of seating inside for inclement weather. What a beautiful vineyard! The wines and view were both wonderful. We enjoyed them so much that we left with a few to take home. The setting along the pond is very nice with ample seating on the patio and a few picnic tables alongside the pond. I love that they allow you to bring your own food as well. Well behaved dogs were in attendance so it is pet friendly. Bathroom lines are long on busy days so be prepared to hold it for about 15 minutes if the place is packed. I revisited after a year and half, and was glad I did. Last time I had the misfortune of visiting when the tasting options were white-heavy, but I was thrilled when I had plenty of wonderful reds to chose from. And I came earlier in my trip so my taste buds were alive! Pollak is one of the older wineries in the area; a portion of their 27 acres of vines are around 12 years old, and they produce around 4,000 cases/year. Keith was my server, and he was quite the expert on his wines. The tasting room was every bit as picturesque as I remember. They are set against the mountains and have a pond right behind the tasting room. I mean, seriously; do wineries employ a scene director to find where to build their future tasting rooms??? I know that's not true; they build where they can find good growing areas, but still! What I tried: 2015 Pinot Gris: Tropical fruit notes; not bad but I'm not a big Pinot Gris/Grigio fan anyway. 2014 Chardonnay: My notes fail me! 2016 Rose: Blend of Cab Franc, Merlot, and Cab Sav. I don't see Roses that are blended with multiple grapes often but this was a nice change. I think made in a dry style. 2014 Cab Franc: Soft, some cherry notes. 2013 Merlot: Very nice, medium bodied. 2014 Petit Verdot: Favorite of the lineup! Not overpoweringly tannic like some PVs. read more

Pollak was highly recommended to us and while we were excited to try this winery, we left very disappointed by the service. The view was scenic with a great patio overlooking the pond and vineyard. There were also picnic tables on the edge of the pond which provided a great place for taking in the sights and enjoying wine and snacks with friends. The wine was tasty and the inside of the winery was stunning. The service left a lot to be desired. A member of our group was warned that he was too loud. We settled this individual down. Unsurprisingly, service slowed after and when we asked for the final two wines left on our tasting because our tour group was leaving, we were informed that a member in our group had been cut-off and thus the entire group was cut-off. We were also chided with "this is a winery, not a bar." Our group was happy to enjoy the less pretentious atmosphere at Veritas, King Family, and Cardinal and suggest you do the same. read more

I was thrilled at the option of a charcuterie plate, but was surprised that all the food items came still in their packaging and not prepared. For a friends bachlorette we stopped here as part of a winery tour. We got seated outside but I guess due to our party size of 6, at picnic tables by the lake. While the views were gorgeous, the area itself had no shade, was prone to more bugs, and one side of the picnic table was broken, leaving the seat only half the width as normal and not very comfortable. The wines here were decent, with the rose and Viogner being the best in my particular opinion. Prices were pretty OK for most bottles. No food here unfortunately due to COVID but you can bring your own. Another gripe was with only two bathrooms, the line was long to use the bathroom. Definitely would come back here again. read more

We stumbled upon this winery and it has been quickly moved to the top of my wine visit list! A beautiful spot situated next to a pond, it has a large amount of indoor and patio seating - along with spots nearer to the pond. They had a lovely fireplace seating area inside as well. The place was quite busy when we arrived on a Saturday, but we did not have to wait to have a tasting and were able to find seating afterword as well. The staff was energetic and engaging, and she really seemed to have a good understanding of the menu and speaking notes for their wine. We really enjoyed this spot and definitely procured some bottles for our trek home! The winery and tasting room are dog friendly, too! read more

What a fantastic drive from NOVA. Took a little over 2 hours to get their. Went down in June 2020. Upon arrival it is Corvette friendly. The hostess was waiting for us and sat us (social distancing thing). I ordered a bottle of Petit Verdot. So a little about PV first, you really need to let this breath open pour in a glass and wait at least 15 minutes and boom it opens up and wow the flavor is awesome. Slightly Smokey, smooth as heck with a kiss of oak. This is a bold red. If you drink it immediately after opening you may not like it, let if breath... This is a great winery with a great view. We paid a visit to Pollak Vineyards today on our way out of town today, and despite having been to Charlottesville quite a few times, this was our first time at this particular winery. We were a bit hesitant after reading some reviews regarding bad customer service, but we experienced the exact opposite. Our bartender was so personable and gave us great descriptions of each wine, chatted with us about her recent trip to DC (where we are from) and made it a lovely tasting. Their beautiful, comfortable tasting room is completely dog friendly, which is very unique. They offered us water for our doggo, and we enjoyed a few glasses before getting a couple bottles to take home with us. Their white wines were some of the best that we have tasted. The views are absolutely stunning and all the staff went out of their way to provide us with a great experience. We will definitely be back! read more

He turned the corner with his back to me, yelled out GD and threw something at a wall. Not only are there gorgeous vineyards and a beautiful backdrop of hills, but there is also a cool pond behind the tasting room. There is an awesome outdoor patio that overlooks the vineyard and pond. The people here are so nice and have a deep knowledge of their wines. The last time I was there, they had a food menu, which was new. We always stop by here with cheese and crackers and get some wine to enjoy on the patio. I guaranteed this place is a worthwhile stop if you're looking for good wine and an awesome view. read more

We went in with high expectations and unfortunately they did not live up to it. It was not the worst winery we have been to- we were just told that it was the best wine in the area, and that we could not agree with. The tasting price and the quality of the wines were okay, however the price point was a bit high for the wines themselves. We found the service to be okay but nothing special. At times, we felt like we were inconveniencing them, specifically when we came to close out our tab. We are hoping to go back next time we are in town, hoping for a better experience. read more

I visited Pollak Vineyards with my boyfriend for my birthday. This vineyard was my favorite on our vineyard tour. The tasting room is beautiful. It is a high-ceilinged, open room with big windows. It has the elegance and warmth of a classic ski lodge. The staff member hosting our tasting was very friendly. We are clearly new to the wine-tasting game, which didn't seem to bother our host at all. She explained the different wines in simple terms, and made us feel welcome in what can be an intimidating environment. The wine itself was delicious! I did not have high expectations for Virginia wine, and was very pleasantly surprised. The prices for the tasting are reasonable, and purchasing individual bottles of your favorite varietals will not break the bank. The grounds of the vineyard are gorgeous. It's nestled in a valley and closely surrounded by mountains. There is a large pond surrounded by trees near the patio. We enjoyed a bottle of wine on a secluded (but not lonely) picnic table near the pond. Overall, a great experience I would highly recommend for a special occasion. read more

3.5 stars. The Monticello American Viticultural Area is rife with gorgeous wineries producing some of the best wines in the state of Virginia. Pollak Vineyards is no exception. The grounds are lovely. The sleek and airy tasting room feels more like a living room you'd expect to find in a nouveau riche mansion than nestled at the foot of one of the world's oldest mountain ranges. And Pollak's wines themselves are good. For $5 we sampled eight wines, beginning with the requisite Viognier (2010). Pollak's is quite nice, but their Pinot Gris (2010) was one of the best in the tasting. I'm discovering how much I appreciate a dry, minerally wine, and Pollak's Pinot Gris delivers. Next was the Durant White (2010), a blend of Chardonnay, Viognier, and Pinot Gris varieties. The first red up was the Durant Red (2009), which Pollak calls its "red for white wine drinkers." I enjoyed this light-bodied, smoky red. The Merlot (2009) was also really pleasant, aged in oak barrels for 15 months, and then in the bottle 11. And then the tasting came to a grinding halt. We waited, and waited, and waited between our Merlot and our Cabernet Franc (2009) as our tasting guide took leave of us to pour individual glasses for other patrons, ring bottles up for others, and go in the back to get glasses from the dishwasher and restock the shelves behind the counter. Granted, it was worth the wait as the Cab turned out to be an excellent, deep garnet wine with leathery tannins -- but it was odd. And then the tasting came to another grinding halt as our tasting guide took leave of us again to help several more patrons. The tasting room was *quite* crowded, and we'd already had a 15 minute wait just to begin our tasting, so the long pauses only made us crankier. At this point, too, another party approached the tasting counter inquiring about a tasting only to be snapped at by one of the employees. "We've been unexpectedly slammed today," he said shortly. "You're just gonna have to wait." I get that they were overcrowded and scrambling to keep up, but there's no need to for a customer to be on the receiving end of that deep frustration. Also, on a peak fall weekend, there should be no "unexpected slamming." People come out in droves, so perhaps a few more staffers would alleviate some of the pressure. At any rate, we were rewarded for another lengthy pause in our tasting with another wonderful wine, my favorite in the entire lineup: a Cabernet Sauvignon (2008), with a tart cherry nose and silky smooth mouthfeel. Last up was Pollak's Meritage (2008), a blend of Cab Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes. This was my least favorite red of the tasting. Afterwards, four of us purchased glasses of wine to enjoy on Pollak's patio, soaking up some October sunshine in a beautiful setting. Husband and I also purchased some of the Cabernet Sauvignon to bring home. On the whole, we liked the winery and wines; we just weren't as impressed by the overall operation. read more

Gorgeous winery with scenic views and an atmosphere of serenity. Pollak was our final stop on the bachelorette vineyard tour and I was super impressed by the venue and the staff. The tasting room was bright and welcoming, with comfortable seating placed throughout the main room's open layout. A fireplace sits along one of the walls and I can only imagine the coziness of a wintertime gathering in the room. Since we had a group of 13 we were taken to a private tasting room so that we could all taste at one time. We weren't expecting such thoughtful accommodation, so Pollak wins major points for that! Brie facilitated our tasting and she was absolutely fantastic. She was knowledgeable and engaging and truly made our experience delightful. I must admit that I don't remember much about the wines - I enjoyed them all, but had already tasted quite a few earlier in the day so they are all blending together in my mind. There was a red that I almost didn't try, but upon Brie's encouragement I ended up tasting it. I'm pretty sure it was the Meritage and I was blown away. It was full-bodied and the finish was complex and intriguing. In fact, the finish was probably my favorite part and I can't wait for my next trek up to Cville for a bottle! Aside from the beautiful tasting room that opens out onto a wraparound veranda, the grounds themselves are breathtaking. Pollak is a beautiful winery with some quality vino. The tasting room is new, light and spacious with lots of windows, a fireplace for winter and a big deck with tables and chairs along a pond for summer. The atmosphere feels contemporary, upscale and fun. The wines are delish. I agree with the previous poster who mentioned that he wished you got to try the Chardonnay Reserve during the tasting, but I've bought it before and will buy it again. I also really liked the Viogner and Meritage on my most recent visit. The Petit Verdot recently won the Monticello Cup. I thought it tasted very well made, but would have liked a bit more personality in the flavor. I've always had very good service here. I think many of the pourers are related to the owner. They are always well informed and friendly. I'll definitely return here year after year to watch as this great little winery grows. read more

A beautiful facility not too far from I64 so its an easy stop going either east or west. We stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon on our way to Lexington from Richmond as a treat for my mother-in-law on her birthday. (Bonus! She got a free tasting!) Although Pollack has received most of its awards for their reds, I loved the whites, too. The Cab Franc was the favoritie of each of us so we purchased a bottle and enjoyed a glass out on the lovely patio. From here, we can enjoy views of a small lake in one direction and the vineyard in the other. One of my favorite vineyards in VA. read more

One of the best kept secrets among the dozens of wineries in the area, Pollak produces some of the best wines in the area. I've been to probably close to twenty wineries at this point, and after a while they all start to blend together. However, every once in a while a place exceeds my expectations, and Pollak is certainly a highlight in my mind. The have ample outdoor seating, either on the porch, in a seating area nearby, or on benches by the water (the winery faces west on the water, so you can watch the sunset behind the Mountain on the pond). The facilities inside are new and beautiful - the wine tasting bar is small and intimate. We were served immediately upon entering. Our pourer was very knowledgeable and gregarious (bonus points for letting dogs in the tasting room). For having never heard of this place, I was surprised how good all of the wines were on the tasting list. For $7 (the glasses are $4 if you want to take them home, a little steep for the area) we were able to try try eight different wines. I'm a a big red drinker, and all of the reds I tried - Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and the Meritage - were unbelievably good, especially the Meritage and the Cabernet. However, and it pains me to admit it....I liked the 2012 Viognier the most (GASP a white!). Crisp and creamy, it really hits the pallet then mellows out for a smooth finish, with hints of apricot and peach. The perfect summer white. Also the pours were more than generous. This place is far too easy to overlook, what with Veritas, Afton, and King Family nearby, but do yourself a favor and check this place out. It's one of my all time favorites. read more

What a beautiful view! From the moment the five of us walked in we were well taken care of. Casey was our most excellent server and provided us with more than enough information about the Pollak wines with ample tastings. This was our first stop of the day and if I had to do it over again I could have stayed all day. The girls went outside and had a bottle of wine with our cheese and mention board and just relaxed. The Viognier and Derrant were among my favorites but they were all fantastic. I will be back! read more

Beautiful tasting room, nice grounds and an incredibly helpful & knowledgeable staff! This is what awaits your visit to Pollak Vineyards. They are one of the few VA vineyards who grow their own grapes and make all their own wine. They started by growing grapes decades ago, before building their tasting room (it takes several years of grape growing to start producing decent wine). Many places build a tasting room and lease space at other vineyards and/or but grapes or juice from other places, even other states - this really isn't "true VA wine" when they do this. Pollak doesn't do this, as least that's what they advised and that's a nice thing! Give you an idea of what a true vineyard can do. The gentleman we got to give us our tasting was great, he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We truly enjoyed our wine tasting experience and visiting Pollak mainly because of him and his knowledge. The tasting room is BEAUTIFUL and grand! The outdoor seating areas are very nicely done with the focal point being a large pond. If you have the opportunity, you really should make a stop in here! read more
