Another beautiful stop on our Charlottesville-area wine tour. Hazy Mountain offers a unique vibe--think sweeping Appalachian vistas paired with a tasting room and restaurant that feel like they were transported straight from Tuscany. Since I'm a fan of Malbec, the sommelier recommended the 2021 Saperavi (100% Saperavi). It delivered nicely with inky blue fruit and a refreshing acidity. I enjoyed two glasses, and everyone else on our tour was equally happy with their selections. The energy here was great--easily the most active dining scene of our entire tour. The dining area was packed, and the pizzas coming out of the kitchen looked incredible. Between the knowledgeable, helpful staff and those unbeatable mountain views, this is a must-visit. read more

The view is the main reason to come here- absolutely magnificent! The food is also very good and of course the wine is a lot of fun. We did not try a lot of wine- just one of the Petite Manseng varieties (the one aged in concrete) and we enjoyed it with the vegan pizza and the strawberry chicken salad. I've been here a few times. The positive is that it's a huge place with tons of seating inside and out, so it's vert easy to visit. I don't think I've needed to make reservations the times I went. The view is pretty lovely since it's on a hill top. My main negative is that the wine here is not very good. I'm not a wine expert by any means, but I have not tasted a wine here that I enjoyed. I can say the same for the food- also not very good. The whole place has that "commercialized" Italian feel. The vibes can get pretty crowded at certain times of day and the service is not very attentive, especially as it gets busy. I'll be honest, as a sweet wine drinker, this spot wasn't exactly my match. The bartender even gave me a heads-up that they don't lean toward sweeter wines (which I appreciated!). That said, my boyfriend really enjoyed the beer he ordered, and we both agreed the atmosphere more than made up for my wine preferences. The staff was friendly and approachable, and since we visited on a weekday morning, it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. On June 22, I made a reservation for 20 people at Hazy Mountain for July 10 to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday. I had visited Hazy Mountain several times before and thought it would be the perfect place for such a special occasion. Unfortunately, I couldn't have been more disappointed. When our party arrived, it was raining outside. The floors inside were soaking wet, yet no one appeared to be making any effort to dry them or make the area safer. My elderly father slipped and fell on the wet floor. Not a single staff member came to help him up or even asked if he was okay. Even more upsetting, the young man at the host stand actually chuckled as though it were amusing. Our entire party arrived on time for our reservation and was seated promptly. Everyone, both adults and children, were excited and enjoying the beautiful views. However, once everyone was seated, we waited nearly an hour while multiple servers walked past our table without acknowledging us or taking our order. I finally stopped one of the waitresses to let her know we were ready to order. She informed me that she could not serve a party that large and that everyone would need to go to the bar individually to place their own orders. Had that been the policy, it should have been communicated when I made the reservation. A simple welcome to Hazy Mountain by the staff and communicating the order procedure in the beginning prevented a lot of confusion. If the restaurant wasn't equipped to serve a party of 20 at one table, they could have suggested splitting us into smaller groups or offered another solution. After nearly 30 minutes of discussing the situation with the manager, he finally agreed to come take everyone's order. Unfortunately, when the food eventually arrived, much of it was burnt and not even edible. In the end, our entire party left and went to another restaurant to celebrate and eat. What was supposed to be a memorable celebration for my mother's 70th birthday became an incredibly disappointing experience. I understand that restaurants have busy days and unexpected challenges, but the lack of communication, poor customer service, disregard for my father's fall, and the quality of the food made this one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Sadly, what should have been a joyful family celebration turned into a day we'll remember for all the wrong reasons. read more

5 - I'd try to convince my wife to drive an hour just to come here. Skip to the end to see my rating scale. Honestly, the high rating is all about the venue. It's gorgeous. The tasting room and patio area are constructed of high quality materials, giving the place such a classy feel. It's perched atop a hill overlooking the vineyards below with the mountains as a backdrop. They're pet friendly, so even though it borders on a stuffed-shirt feel, it's down to earth enough that our dog was obviously welcome. The beer selection is limited and it seems to be primarily a winery. So just the fact that decent beers are an option bumps the rating up a little higher than I would normally offer for their selection. But the beers in my flight were all crafted well enough that I'd happily spend another afternoon or early evening sipping on an IPA and appreciating the landscape. I didn't take advantage of the food opportunities, but again, the fact that it's there is the last of the three main things I look for - outdoor seating, good quality beers, and easy access to something to eat. So while the beers weren't the best I had on our trip to Virginia, they were still pretty good. But the facilities themselves are enough to make me want to try to convince Mama to go back. 1 - Just don't 2 - You'll survive, but there are better choices close by 3 - Good choice if you're in the area 4 - I'd drive 30 minutes out of my way just to come here 5 - I'd try to convince my wife to drive an hour just to come here read more

A beautiful estate and good wine! This was our first winery on our wine weekend and one of our group's favorites. We were a group of nine and were seated on the large covered patio overlooking the hills. We had great service; our server came by often to check on us. In order to sample the wines, we all opted for flights, most of which were between $20 and $25. These came out quickly and we all thought the wines were good. For lunch, most of the group opted for salads and pizzas. The blackberry chicken salad was delicious, and a very generous portion for the price point. The pizzas were very large for personal pizzas and very tasty. The arugula prosciutto was a standout. More than anything though, we enjoyed the scenery and the awesome patio that this vineyard had. Really gorgeous views, mediocre wine. We stepped in for a late afternoon visit on a hot summer weekday. Since it was an off-time, we walked up to the bar and ordered right away. We ordered a rose and a white wine. Both were expensive and subpar. After checking out the inside of the building and the upstairs area, we headed down to the outdoor area and sat looking out at the mountains. Hazy Mountain is a good name for it, as it was certainly hazy, but overall I personally wouldn't return. The building felt sterile and almost like a Brio Tuscan Grille. Not my vibe. read more

Absolutely Amazing. Hazy Mountain Winery is now one of our top favorite wineries on the east coast! It reminded us of our favorite Napa Valley winery in aesthetics, food, and wine.  The grounds, building, and tasting room are welcoming and incredible. They create a place where you want to spend the entire day sipping wine and noshing.  The staff is great and does a great job of balancing the classiness of the place without becoming pretentious. They are very friendly and were eager to share the history of HMW and their wines.  We were very pleased with the wines we sampled and impressed with the quality of the reds HMW is producing. It is often challenging to find solid bold reds in this area of the US. Our favorite was the BDX Red Blend.  A bonus to HMW is they also serve craft beer. This is a game changer to groups who have people that do not drink wine. This provided something for everyone. The food served at the winery is very good. They do a nice job of creating a menu that is accessible to everyone with common food items that are "kicked up" instead of moving into the fine dining category. We started with the reuben pickle bites, simple, yet satisfying. The soft pretzel was delicious and huge.  The grape chili meatballs were very flavorful.  We also tried two of their artisan pizzas.   The margarita pizza was bursting with flavor and the red sauce was very addicting. The special pizza for the day was the crab pizza, which was better than the ones we've had at the beach.   I highly recommend Hazy Mountain and would absolutely drive the 4 hours back down to visit in the future. read more

This winery has fantastic views and ample outdoor space to enjoy it. The indoor space looks like a castle and is quite large as well! I tried the white wine flight and enjoyed it, I honestly don't know much about wines but to me it was good! The only downside was they wouldn't let us sit at a table outdoors without a reservation. There was some space open indoors upstairs, and it started raining anyway so it worked out. I wouldn't recommend coming here without a reservation if you want to sit and relax! read more

Hazy Mountain has an incredibly beautiful tasting room, delicious wines and an absolutely stunning view, way up on top of a hill (mountain?) My nephew got married there over the weekend and the festivities for the wedding were spectacular. The food was amazing, the wines wonderful the wedding planner did a fantastic job, everything was gorgeous. The gal who waited on us that evening "Sartori" took great care of us, and she had injured her ankle two days before. What a trooper! So sweet and accommodating. My sisters and niece and I hosted the welcome party the night before and once again the coordinators and servers (Paige and Kayla) were amazing. So helpful and anticipating our every need. I highly recommend Hazy for their wines, the view and if you want to hold an event there go for it! read more

Views are impeccable - nowhere better in the area IMO. Tried a flight each as to be able to try 8 total wines - some were standouts, others were just fine. Cool that they're all made locally though - and honestly, that alone helps enhance the taste and the experience of drinking them. I love the ambiance to this place - the old stone building alongside the mountains felt very European and/or Napa-esque. Huge seating area outside that we basically had to ourselves - and plenty indoors and/or next to the building if you'd prefer a balcony. Can imagine this place is stunning for a wedding or big event. I will say the specialty hot dogs and pizzas looked great, just wasn't that hungry. Both of the apps were great. I had the beer fright. The Lager and Hefeweizen were very good. I'm not an IPA guy but their Hazy was good, not too hoppy. The pilsner fell flat. My wife gave so so reviews on the wine flight. She struggled to finish the red blend which is usually a go to. Been there a number of times and have taken out of town friends.. Always tell them what I am saying her. Views are amazing! Wine is ok, but getting better. Food is hit or miss BUT......Staff often is rude and entitled. You get 4-5 star prices with 1-2 star service. Views keep this place going, not wine or service. This problem is fairly consistent with service. I live close, it should be a regular, but not. Go for view and pictures with family and friends. The food is amazing their Bavarian Pretzel with beer cheese and dark ale mustard was fantastic and the Caprese Skewers were fresh and very flavorful!! Enjoyed visiting here. Sadly, true to its name, it was hazy out but it's still great to sit and look all around. We'll definitely come back on a clear day. There were 5 of us. We enjoyed talking with him and learning more about the place and all it has to offer. It is a beautiful place for a wedding and we found out there is a Villa to rent as well! I don't know if this is generally a thing or if it's because I went during graduation weekend but all shaded seats were reservation only. The wine was ok. I didn't really love any of the ones I tried but They give nice sized pours. You have to order from a general bar which can get a little crowded when busy. The view from the back of the property is amazing. The wine was decent and the staff is friendly. I'd go more for the vibes rather than the wine. I wish they at least had umbrellas or something for outdoor seating. Also I wish they had more tables to put glasses on in the outdoor area lining the pathway. read more
