Water woods and seals I usually go hiking here in the colder weather but since the rain finally stopped decided to give it a try today. It's just as gorgeous in the warm weather as it is in the winter. Lots of sail boats out on the water and beautiful views of both Narragansett Bay and the woods. Great stone walls and foundations of buildings that are now just memories. Bugs weren't even too bad considering all the rain we had. A great place to hike and visit anytime of the year.

One of the trails at the preserve...even offers agility practice for the pups after a storm!

After driving by this parking lot for nearly 20 years to/from Narragansett and always saying to myself "I wonder what's there," a few years back I decided to check it out...thank goodness I did! The Chafee preserve is full of numerous hiking trails that lead out to Rome Point and a rocky beach area with sweeping views of Jamestown, the Jamestown bridge, and Quonset. It's most popular among people who want to hike with their dogs (most off leash), but you can also find some bikers, beach goers, and folks going crabbing/fishing/clam digging. The trails are generally well maintained and while you'll see people, it's not ever very crowded. There is a main trail that takes you straight to the water (less than mile). However, we love the side trails; the left trail (you'll see it about 200 yards in from the parking lot just after an abandoned short stone wall) and it will lead you out to the tip of Rome point (where you'll see cute seals during the spring months); the right trail (a bit further up off the main trail) will take you past some abandoned structures and eventually out to the beach as well. We love coming here with our dog and letting him tire himself out on the trails. Some advice: no bathrooms or trash cans so plan accordingly, parking can fill up occasionally (lot has spots for maybe 20-25 cars) so some folks may win up parking on the main road. Sometimes it can get buggy so having bug spray with you isn't ever a bad idea! Also, all of the paths are rocky or have roots so wouldn't recommend a stroller or wagon if you can avoid it! There is a seal expert, a gentleman who has come for years with his high quality binoculars and keeps a website on the Rome point seals, who if you're lucky enough to meet you'll learn a ton about these cute creatures creatures!

If you walk the beach to the right and sit on the stone wall you can see the Jamestown bridge!

This park is a vast well maintained full service state park in the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island! For a small fee, we rented a gorgeous little private shaded spot with two picnic benched and real bathroom facilities. We brought out food and a small grill to cookout. They did come check our permit, which you need to reserve to grill. Dell's lemonade truck is often present, so we treated ourselves to the famous Dell's frozen lemonade-yay! We were there a good 5 or 6 hours and it was a perfectly lovely and enjoyable day for our family to relax and enjoy our rare time to reconnect in person. What an invaluable experience. I can't stress enough having uninterrupted time with those you love. Cell service is non existent, so take this time to disconnect off the grid and just live and love. This place is a true simple gift-a Beautiful way to reconnect and just feed the soul. Take my advice, do it now, while you can. Make a happy plan before life makes other plans! Sometimes it's hard to find out what part of the park you're meant to meet someone in since there are so many sections. You can walk along the long beach or try a woodsy hiking trail. The trails on the right of the beach have either steps or a gradual slope to get up to the top of them, and you can look down over a small cliff to see the water below. The trails on the left of the gazebo are beautiful and give you many options, but people ride horses here, so be mindful of the droppings! This park has fantastic sunsets and multiple picnic areas, plus multi Porta potties that are usually in decent condition to use if needed. The bridge is great to look at, but can get crowded with families doing holiday photo shoots in the fall, so I've become wary of coming here since being stuck on one side of the bridge while a family made us wait to cross until they were done with pictures (ugh). I've come here for walks/hikes and even to wade at multiple times of year and always enjoy a beautiful day and peaceful experience here.

Festina Lente…read more Signal Rock Park is a cool park tucked in a wooded area at the very end of Signal Rock Road. I suspect not many people just happen by the park, it's well hidden and is actually quite a bit larger than it first looks. The park is the home to two nice baseball fields that obviously get a lot of use. The baseball diamonds dominate the park so much that it's easy to miss what's lurking in the other, less used parts. If you go up the hill from the baseball area you will find a basketball court and a cool area that kids have turned into a mini skate park. Just some old steps from some long forgotten something, creative young minds turned it into a great place to test the laws of physics.. The park isn't really large enough for any hiking but a stroll along the perimeter of the park makes for a pleasant walk, especially in the snowy or stormy weather. A hill provides a nice spot that allows some entertaining sledding without being steep enough to kill off the younger generation. One of the small parks that has a lot more than is visible at first glance. I was so busy checking out the baseball fields that I almost walked right by the incredible chuck of quartz that guards the entrance. Like most people I tend to walk fast and want to get to the next place. But as Suetonius said in Divus Augustus, sometimes it is much better to "festina lente". (Hurry slowly).
