Sadly BEC just ain't the same anymore. No personal connections or conversations - just a quick eye exam and your out the door.

It seems the staff has been programed by the doctors to book appointments so they can bill your insurance company for another office visit by only performing one type of exam one day and than scheduling you for another type of exam on another date so they can bill for another office visit instead of doing the work that needs to be done on the same day. Guess this is their way of collecting more from the insurance company at the inconvience to the patient. Than they try and say the insurance won't pay if two procedures are done on the same day, which is not true. I checked this with the insurance company as not being true, again it's just their way of billing a second unnecessary inconvenient office visit to the patient. Had my first visit with Dr. B and while she was lovely and competent, I have mixed reviews of her staff members. Most of them were not particularly friendly, lacking the customer service one might expect in a medical establishment, particularly one with sales attached to it. I don't know if they have any trained opticians there, as everyone aside from the doctor called themselves "techs". All that is well and fine until you are trying to pick out the right lenses for you and the woman in charge of that clearly hasn't a clue. Her focus is on upselling, but she can't speak to why one lens is preferable over the other, just pushing the more expensive lens. She became condescending and combative and insisted I take my prescription elsewhere, simply because she didn't like that I had very basic questions that she couldn't answer. I wouldn't trust her to measure my pupils to ensure the proper lens measurements either. Additionally, one of the machines needed to screen for macular degeneration was broken, which made my experience additionally frustrating. The eyeglass selection was also very basic, with few options I'd consider high end designer/fashionable. Even Costco carries nicer frames. Not 5 stars as I specifically asked for an appt with Dr Boerman and only saw her passing in the hall. The Dr. that provided the exam was fine, but I didn't make any appt. With her and I was not asked if it would be okay seeing someone else. That's not right. I'm sure if Dr. Boerman made a hair appt or dental appt with a specific person she would expect to see that person, thus the reason for making an appointment. I was not a walk-in. I was really excited to try this eye doctor since I had heard good things. However, I went on their website to schedule an appointment a couple of days beforehand and then received a call when I was pulling into their parking lot for my appointment saying they weren't able to take me. They said they have no idea why it even let me schedule an appointment for that time because they were booked. They told me they prefer calling since their system online is "broken." I had to wait an hour past my appointment time and they didn't seem wildly busy. Then they couldn't get my eyes to dilate. (I've never had an issue with other optometrists) They forgot to give me my Rx when I left and I was rushing to my next appointment as this took 2hrs just for an annual check up! (They emailed it to me once I called for it) They had a poor selection of frames so I took my Rx to another provider and will not be back. Update: The owner reached out and was very concerned and explained software issues contributed to my poor experience. She asked if she could make it up to me (didn't see a way how) and took my feedback and suggestions to improve these scenarios to her staff so I do believe experiences like mine will be far and few between. I've increased my rating to 2 stars. However, I'm not personally comfortable with how she reached out (my personal cell phone and numerous very long messages). I'm also concerned to learn after speaking with her that the other doctor who shocked me informing me I had the start of cataracts (odd as I'm in my 30s) and that there was nothing to do... The owner reviewed my results and said it was nothing and not likely cataracts (that they just thoroughly look at every little detail and they didn't mean to alarm me). I'll be sure to discuss this with a new optometrist, just in case. read more

I'm not very good with words but I want to make sure to say from the first time I walked into Brentwood Eye Care, they made me feel like I was cared for from the moment I walked in, to the moment I walked out. Dr. Helen Boerman and her team took excellent care of me. They really do put the patients first. Dr. Boerman took the time to really listen to my concerns and made me feel such at ease. Dr. Gene Harman is a great optometrist and the office is very professional. He has been an optometrist since 1972, but he has changed his methods and his technology as the world has evolved into the future. His front office staff is friendly and helpful. They're very good at helping you pick out the right glasses for you (if you choose to get some glasses along with or instead of contacts... I was in need of a new pair, even though I wear contacts, because I hadn't bought a new pair of glasses since I was 12... I'm 31 now... it's pretty safe to say my glasses were a bit out of style). Today was my first time with Dr. Boerman, and it was an absolutely delightful experience! I did not have to wait more than five minutes in the waiting room. All of her technicians were respectful of me nursing my baby during my appointment and they were very timely and thorough. She listened to me without an eagerness to get to her next patient. Update: Dr. Boerman personally reached out to me , we discussed my experience in details and she apologized profusely about my poor experience. She explained the billing system limitations and promised to improve front desk communication to avoid billing surprises. She also corrected my contact lenses Rx and exchanged my supplies. I have seen Dr. Harman for several years as he has been very precise in Prescribing for my astigmatism.   I was recently in the mall and experienced Sharp eye pain so I stopped in a  walk in vision place and  got some drops. I was a patient of Dr. Harmon's years ago and moved to Dr. Boerman when she joined the practice. Dr. Boerman is always very thorough and detailed. She recently helped me with an issue that my doctor and several other specialist dismissed. Because of her, I had tangible proof that something was wrong. I was able to take her diagnosis to my PCP and have the needed test. I ended up having surgery. If she hadn't listened to me and been so detail oriented, I might still be dealing with headaches and dizziness! She is wonderful! I would recommend her to everyone I know! read more

When I came to the clinic. My vision with my contacts was horrible. I had to constantly rub my eyes to regain focus . Upon examination, Dr Boerman determined that my prescription was wrong and I was wearing incorrect contact lens for my dry eye condition. After leaving her office, the change was immediate. No more rubbing my eyes to regain focus. Dr Boerman is the most informative,intelligent and approachable physician I have worked with in a long time and I am a Registered Nurse. I am a new patient of Dr. Harman, but I feel like he has been my eye doctor for my entire life. In one visit he gave me more information about my vision that anyone ever has before. He does not try to sell unnecessary treatments and talks to his patients like friends. He explains everything so well that I had no questions when I walked out the door. I was honestly laughing the entire time I was there and felt like I was hanging out with friends instead of sitting at the doctor.
