Brett has a gift. You tell him exactly what your issues are and he jumps right in to elevate them. I would say he has a lot of controlled power, as he is a very big guy but also very gentle both in touch and in spirit. He also doesn't rush you out or give you less than an hour like a lot of places. It seems from his website he also offers many different types of massages from elderly, pregnant and for cancer. He did a combo for me of deep tissue, sports and neurothearpy. It sounds like he is also available for house calls in the Venice area. I had an amazing massage experience with Brett. He's very easy to communicate with and is very courteous in texts and in person. His location is easy to find and I had no problems finding any parking. When I arrived, I was greeted with a smile and a firm handshake, both positive signs of what was to come. The massage is in a private room that's very tranquil and dressed to the part. He had soothing classical musical on in the background. Brett was very professional and he did a quick interview/assessment to determine what I need. I suffer from symptoms of scoliosis so I had a few areas that I knew I needed work on. But for our first session, I wanted something for the entire body. The massage itself was wonderful. At times, I could feel myself falling asleep because it was so relaxing. And then where I needed it most, he gave just the correct amount of pressure to really get the kinks out. I treat my body like an amusement park. As a dancer, yoga instructor, and generally fitness junkie, I am always in need of a massage. I was having some serious issues with my neck, shoulders, lower back, hips, quads, and hamstrings when I came to Brett. My old massage therapist had moved and I hadn't had a massage in weeks. My week had been very full of running around and teaching different places, so my body was shot. I stumbled upon Brett, called to make an appointment with him, spoke to him personally. He was extremely accommodating and helpful. When I arrived to his office I was relieved to find that he had a quiet, zen as well as warm space to work from. I explained to him that everything from my eyebrows down hurt. He started to fix me up right away with some electrical stimulation therapy before my massage which he transmitted through his hands. Very cool! After that I was already feeling better and uplifted. Then Brett administered a kick ass massage. I've had a lot of massages but this is definitely rising to the top. He keeps open communication with you, has extensive knowledge in several styles of massage, knows what different body types need what, which is extremely important for someone as active as me. I'm a long-time Yelp lurker, and I am popping my review cherry because Brett is so amazing! Quick-and-Dirty: Brett's ability to feel out my muscles and target my areas of tension with great precision and pressure catapulted him to being my best massage experience EVER. The space of his office was a bit disorienting at first because it's in a non-descript building and I am used to spa-like settings, but those became such minor considerations in comparison to Brett's skills. Long Story: I've had several deep-tissue massages in the past from a number of different therapists. I do a lot of weight-lifting and I sit in front of a computer for 60+ hours per week for work and general web-browsing; basically, I have a lot of knots and carry a lot of tension in my muscles. Many times throughout the day, I can actually feel the soreness in my upper back from the tension in my muscles. I look for someone who can really attack my tense areas and get my muscles to relax. My session with Brett began with a conversation on what my needs were and what I hoped to get from our session. Brett was very kind and explained his background and how the session would go. From there, I was floored. Even with a lot of pressure, I generally don't make noises during massages. During my session with Brett, I broke this trend and did something else I've never done during a deep-tissue massage: I requested a break! Brett has the strongest hands I've experienced - enough to make all former deep-tissue massages I've had seem like child's play. This is not to say that Brett is only for those wanting a deep-tissue massage - he varied his pressure throughout the session and I can imagine that even someone wanting a less deep, more relaxing session would walk away with the best massage they've ever had. As for me, I wanted everything worked out! And at one point, I was so overwhelmed with pleasure-pain that I almost started giggling out of euphoria. At the end of my session, I stood up and I felt different. Parts of my body that I wasn't even aware were tense now felt like jelly and I felt taller. I was thrilled to find Brett over a year ago since I have always had such a difficult time finding massage therapists who can do a proper healing medical massage for my tension headaches. Even when I would ask people to work on my neck they wouldn't. I've decided that most massage therapists just don't know how. Sooo... Here's what I have to share with you all this morning: On Wednesday of this past week I had a pretty serious situation going on with my shoulder (specifically in the glenohumoral joint for all my anatomy nerds). There was no sudden moment where it began. I had been feeling signs of this issue coming on for weeks, small at first and then it gradually got worse and worse until I could barely even move my right arm at all! I lost my ability to lift my arm forward, rotate it inwards (medially), or much less, raise my arm any higher then my waist level. I was terrified!! In a way it felt like it was coming partially dislocated somehow!! :-O Here's where the story gets good! I went to work and told my dear friend Brett about it and kindly, he offered to do a little bit of work on the shoulder. He did about 30 minutes of trigger point therapy mainly on the muscles of the rotator cuff and my pectoralis major and minor. It's funny, because I could not believe the relief I felt the next day. Seriously, my arm felt 70% better and I had full range of motion back!! This is my point in telling you all this: It's one thing to be a massage and neuromuscular therapist myself and provide this kind of therapy to people on a daily basis. It's a whole entire other thing to actually be suffering with an acute injury and experience first hand the miraculous capability that this modality has to bring relief!! Just got back from a massage with Brett, and I'm feeling very relaxed. He's very friendly and welcoming, and he has a very zen and calming presence. It's always important for massage therapists to ask about your problem areas (it really bugs me when they don't), but Brett specifically asked me about this before beginning the massage. His style is definitely firm and focused but gentle. There were a couple times I think I probably could have handled a bit more pressure, but generally speaking it was great. I have had many massage experiences over the years but the communication between the client and the massage therapist is essential to a good healing session. I found that Brett listened to everything I mentioned as he worked on me. I get an allergic reaction to heavy aromatic oils and I was pleasantly surprised to find that Brett used a neutral oil combination which did not make my allergies flare up. The work space is very soothing and quiet, and the actual treatment was amazing and accurate. I was extremely relaxed and sleepy at the end of my hour. Brett also explained his use of electromagnetic energy with equipment that gives an extra health advantage to his menu of treatments. Great experience and a great massage. I haven't had many massages and really didn't know the difference between Swedish, deep tissue, shiatsu, etc. Brett was able to explain the main differences to me. He started my session with a very unique process which included a type of electric impulse that contracted my muscles via his hands. I don't know the name of the technique, but I do know that my neck and shoulders have not felt as relaxed as they do now in years. The deep tissue was fantastic.
